293.0. "Nanday Conure info please" by CHET::MACDONALD () Mon Dec 18 1989 10:02

Could someone give me some info on Nanday Conures, or point me to an
existing note. I may be acquiring one but I'm not sure if I want to
keep it. I have heard that they are screamers but also that they
are cuddlers. How does thier screaming compare to a yellow nape.
My collection right now consists of a cockatiel, 2 budgies, 1 soon
to be 2 lovebirds, 2 mastiffs, and 2 cats. This bird is an import
but is semi-tame. Any info (or interest in the bird) would be greatly
    appreciated!!

    Hi,

There's a little bit of info on nandays in note 81, though I don't
know how helpful that info will be to you.

I have a nanday and two lovebirds. The nanday is everything you
said. He's (she's??) VERY affectionate, but when he screams, you'll
know it!! Zaph was hand raised, so I really don't know how difficult
training an import will be. He's been talking alot of gibberish
for a couple of months now (he's about 8 months old) and recently
started to copy my wifes laugh. He also says "what?" though not
very clearly. They're not known to be great talkers.

Zaph has pretty much run of the house. If either my wife or I are
home, he refuses to be left in the cage! This is when he does the
most screaming. Consequently, the first thing I do when I get home
is take him out....it saves my ears!

He also definately loves to cuddle. He has two favorite spots. One
is to climb into our shirts, turn himself around, and peek his
head out from the shirt under our chin. He'll sit like this for
hours if we're watching TV (gotta make sure to pet him now and then,
or he gets ticked off that you're not paying attention and the
result is a bite in the neck!) His other favorite spot is when
I'm lying on the floor watching a game. I'll lie on my side, and
he'll climb up to my shoulder and lean against my cheek to keep his
balance. He'll actually fall asleep like that!!

Anyway, he's definately a fun bird, but remember, they ARE screamers.
It may have an effect on your other animals. Good luck!!

Thanks so much for the info. I did read note 81 and that helped too.
I won't know till after Christmas if I'll be getting the bird but at
least now I'll have an idea of what to expect!

    hi,

i have a nanday, (buddie) he is the greatest bird i have ever had
along with being a great friend too !!! he is just like a person,
he has his opinion on everything, if i do something that he does not
like, i get a beak full of back talk. but he does go everywhere
with me on my days off, ie; grocery shopping, to the park, bike
riding. it is really fun. he does several tricks, plays dead,
hangs and swings upside down while hanging on to my pinky with just
one foot, his weirdest quirk is he likes to bathe in the blender,
(not turned on of course). he is the greatest escape artist since
houdini, cant keep him in a cage to save my soul. he is s sqwuaker,
but i have found he only wants to be in which ever room i am in
so needless to say he is with all the time at home. he is a cuddlier
also, and so loving, the vet has informed me that he has bonded
to me and has decided that i am his mate, as he primes me and tries
to feed me all the time, and of course wants to eat what ever i
am eating and then in turn offer it to me once i give it to him.
i have also found since i have to get up on my days that i work
at 4am, that on my 4 days off he has decided that 6:30am is the time
that we should arise on OUR days off, so i have a alarm clock that
i can not unplug or remove the batteries from !!!!

well thats all for now !!!
