Does anyone who has an African Grey have any suggestions? I tried a new food dish out on my Grey (Jonathan) about 2 weeks ago. It was a smallish Ceramic dish. I put it in the cage but did not notice a small crack in one side. When I tried to close the little door which holds the dishes in, the dish broke. Food went everywhere and one side broke. Since then Jonathan has been afraid of his own shadow. When I aproach the cage, or open it and get his food dish, he goes into screaming hysterics. If I pet him he calms down a little. Is there anything I can do to calm him down? Any oppinions on whether he will lose his fear over time? He and I were getting along real well before. Jonathan is a wild-caught Quarantine Grey who has had problems since I have had him. When I got him he had parasites. Then his thyroid was low so he's on some medication. Now he's afraid of his own shadow. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks... Laurie

If you can handle him, try taking him out of his cage and cuddling him while you put his food dish in. It sounds like he needs to associate something positive with being fed. If you haven't already done so, use his old food dish. I have found that our birds, (including a grey), don't like anything new we put in their cage (e.g. new swing, chewing wood, dishes). They avoid it for 3-4 days then finally start to use it. Yours sound very sensitive! Good Luck! Linda |
