288.0. "Questions RE:molty Amazon" by CUPCSG::BELLIVEAU () Tue Dec 05 1989 09:15
We've had Buddy, a blue-front Amazon, for about a year, and he's
molting. Our other bird never molted since he's a feather plucker,
and gets them first :^( , so we don't know what to expect.
My concerns are:
How long before the feathers grow back? It's been over two weeks and
it seems all the feathers that are going to fall out are out. Now he's
covered with grey fluff on his back and stomach, and his flight
feathers are ratty-looking. Will the fluff fall out as well before
his "real" feathers come back?
Are the nutritional needs of molting birds increased? This guy has
a healthy appetite which hasn't been affected by the molting. He gets
vitamins in his water and eats his seed mixture, monkey chow, and fresh
fruits and vegetables each day.
How often do Amazon molt each year?
Thanx
Linda

| since Mike as other birds that molt and Samantha our yellow nape
has molted already once.
DON"T PANIC AT ALL THE FEATHERS!!!! make yourself a nice feather
pillow!!! joke!
expect little feathers long feathers all around for awhile, it's
normal! they never run out.
As long as Buddy is getting vitamins then he shouldn't have any
trouble. But can I relate to the ratty look!

288.2 | NEKTON-BIO | SVCRUS::BUCCIERI | | Wed Dec 06 1989 10:52 | 13 |
| Some Amazons molt more than once a year, this is due to the
environmental conditions around them. My Amazon is also going
through a molt at this time as well. This is his second this year.
Anyway, you can help your blue front by giving him Nekton-bio in
his water during this molt period. N-BIO gives him additional nutrient
to stimulate healthy feather growth. I usually give my birds Nekton-S
daily and I continue this with the BIO. You can get these vitamins
at Erickson Grain in Acton. Lastly, don't worry ..... your blue
front will have great feathers again.
Good Luck

288.3 | vitimins in seed | SVCRUS::KROLL | | Wed Dec 06 1989 19:11 | 3 |
| I too find the vitimins make a BIG difference but I put them into
the seed mix with a little wheat germ oil and other things. This
way their water does not go bad on them so quick.
