286.0. "Renaming my new bird!" by MVDS01::BELFORTI (Roseanne Barr's twin sister) Mon Nov 20 1989 14:45

    How hard is it on the bird to rename them? I just adopted a 15 month
    old grey cockateil, who is a real love. He likes sitting in his cage,
    muttering to himself, and dive bombing the cats and dog when he is out.
    He loves to eat anything we are putting in our mouths, but must see us
    eat it first (I guess to make sure we aren't trying to poison him). I
    got him from a fellow DECie, who has the mom and pop to this guy. He
    is just really a nice bird.... but he does have one drawback, his name!

    Howard, if you happen to read this, don't get upset, but he does NOT
    look like a BUZZARD (Buzz or Buzzie for short); he may have when he
    first hatched, but he sure doesn't now. He's **beautiful**!

    So, my question is, how hard is it on the bird to rename him? I would
    like to get something close to what he knows already, but that may be
    hard to do. Will it warp his mind totally and cause him to become
    psychopathic?? I surely don't want that!

    any advice would be greatly appreciated!

    	I picked up my African grey when he was Seven years old and changed
    his name from Eagle to Jonsey. It never seemed to bother him at all and
    he very quickly learned to respond to his new name.

My 'tiel's name was Oscar when I got him at about 7 months old. Renamed him
to Larrybird.  He never responded to either name  :-}

    just got a Timneh grey parrot named Sam -- made a minor adjustment
    to Sammie without ill effect -- he perks up right away to the new
    name (took less than a week) /linda

    Have decided to try him with several, and see what he responds to.
    Buzzard just doesn't fit, he's toooooo pretty for that!

    Thanks all!
286.5Not sure about this one..MILPND::BUCCIERITue Nov 21 1989 16:3710

The only thing that I can think of that might screw him up is if he knows his
name by repeating you as you say HELLO to him, this could get him confused.
One of our mini-macaw's name is ASTRO, and he repeats " HELLO ASTRO" real
well when he is spoken to. I don't know what he would think if we started
calling him something different.

But otherwise, I agree with most people, I don't think most birds really know
their names..Or do they??

    Just talked with mu husband, he has been saying Hello _______ (insert
    random names), and he perks up with Zephyr. So, it looks like he may
    have a new name by the time I get home tonight!

    Will let you know if he has a "reaction" to the name change.

    Thanks agian!
