When I got home last night, I noticed something weird about one of my cockatiels. It looked like a "hole" on the side of his head. Upon close inspection, the "hole" is his ear. His ear is totally "uncovered". I thought maybe the other bird plucked his feathers, but there is no evidence of any feathers anywhere. Then, this morning, I noticed the other side of his face is developing a "dent" in the ear area. What's going on here? Should I be freaked? Other than being uncovered, there is no weeping or bleeding or redness or anything. Diane

If you could see some of the large, long feathers [not to mention all the pin- feathers] at the bottom of my birds' cage, and on the floor, and all over the room, you'd be amazed at the fact that they aren't completely NAKED! It's that time of year... and sometimes they spend hours, and hours... just picking, pulling, tugging, picking... To me, the oddest thing is when they are finally finished [or just taking a break] and they have a feather stuck in their mouth! I try to help, but fingers near their sharp little beaks are the last thing they want! Two cockatiels can make one mell of a hess! Between my birds molting and my collie getting his winter coat and shedding tremendously... I feel like there is a conspiracy by the "kids" to keep me cleaning house for the rest of my life! |
