235.0. "Why does my bird get sick?" by ALCTRZ::BROOKS_DO () Tue Aug 08 1989 14:49

I have two parkeets that have a slight runny nose I took them
to my Vet and they are taking medicine. My boy parkeet is 7 years
old and pretty tame considering they are a pair and my female
parkeet only tolerates sitting on your finger if she has to.
She gets real hot and nervous so I dont handle her for more than
5 min or so. Now that they are sick I must hold her while she struggles
and fights to give the medicine to her I have noticed that a few
times she has thrown up it is not a pretty sight I dont like
to see her this upset but I dont have a choice she has to take the
medicine. Is this normal for her to get sick after being fed the
medicine or should I worry ? Both birds are not fluffed up they
have big appetites and their not listless and the runny
nose has stopped. I have been giving them medicine since Sat. Night.

P.S. Why do birds always seem to get weekends?

235.1Why do you get sick ?GIAENG::PULSIFERDoug Pulsifer 296-3332Wed Aug 09 1989 09:0424

    Donna,

Did you take them to an Avian vet ? The first vet I took my birds
to was not an Avian vet and he had me giving the bird Amoxicillian
with an eye dropper. This not only totally stressed out the bird
and me, but I ended up turning my white budgie pink. After giving
my budgie the drops for the 4 weeks he reccomended it still was
not better. I ended up with medicated seeds which finally did the
    trick.

Since that time I have gone to a Avian vet and he put my budgies
on medicine that goes into the water. This is a whole lot more
convenient and I am advised by many people that the water method
is just as good. I would suggest talking to your vet and telling
him that you "need" him to give you equivelent medicine in water
soluble form. I would have to assume that your vet does not have
many pet birds of his own or he would not suggest giving the bird
    drops directly.

You should shop around for a Avian vet for future use.

    Good luck,
    Doug

    Hi Doug,

Yes I took them to an Avian Vet. I have Been through three Vets
so far and this one is the best. Thank you for the advice on medicated
water I have never heard of that. I bet Lady bird will love it.
I have figured out that she is not getting sick but that she dislikes
the medicine so much that after I give it to her she regurgates
sp? it. I will call my vet this afternoon and see if they carry
    it.

    Thanks again

    Hi Doug it's me again.

I called the Vet and they don't realy like to give the birds medicated
water due to the fact you can't control how much or how little medicine
the get. But due the problems lady is having with the medicine the
vet agreed. Thank you very much for the advice.

    HI DONNA,

I would think that the Vet has a good point about not controlling
how much the bird gets, but everyone I have talked to (including
vets) say that it doesn't matter.

What was the diagnosis and what is the medicine prescribed ?

235.5Gas leakALCTRZ::BROOKS_DOThu Aug 17 1989 17:4911
    HI,

Well the diagnosis was a gas leak going into my house and aggravating
my poor birds noses (what a mean mom) I had no idea untill their
tests all came out negative. This happened once before with my
cockatiel. Mom is slow but sure. We were giving them some sort of
penicillan sp? before the tests even came back and we kept up with
them just in case the birds got an infection from the runny noses.
We are all better now. Thank you for you help.
