Hello,
I have a situation that some of you may know about or have experienced
before. Two of the birds I have are Greys they are housed in a cage
that is 8 ft. high by 4 ft. deep by 6 ft wide. They (Max & Doe)
have been in this cage for almost a year and get allong fine. I
do not know what the sex is of either of them and do not have a
nesting box for them. (although I was contemplating attempting to
breed them).
About two weeks ago the started doing somthing unusual, the
began chewing there wooden dowels (the ones the stand on) to the
point of destruction. They even destroyed a wooden ladder.
This I could deal with and attributed it to bordem so I attempted
to add toys - - - They were promptly removed and dropped to the
bottom of the cage by Max and Doe.
Now within the last TWO days I have noticed that Doe is loosing
the feathers behind and on the top of his head at what I would consider
a fast rate,
This botherd me untill yesterday my wife noticed that Max was
picking at Does head and was even seen with a feather or two in
his (sex not determined ? ) mouth. this releaved me somwhat and
I did not have to worry that Doe had some sicknes or a nutritional
disorder.
MY BIG QUESTION IS WHY ARE THESE THINGS HAPPENING ALL OF A SUDDEN
?
CAN ANYONE OFFER ANY IDEAS ?

I had a similar problem with two finches (the feather plucking all of a
sudden). What it seemed to be was that the one bird was ready to mate
but the other was not. I put a different bird with the plucker and had
some babies. Maybe they know what sex they are!

We also have two Greys (not breeding). They change their behaviour
in Spring-early-Summer. What time of the year do you have ?

I have cockatiels. They go through spurts where they will chew
and destroy any wooden objects in their cage. Followed by spurts
of chewing absolutely nothing. I have taken this behavior to be
funky bird behavior, and have not worried about it.
On the advice of .2, I am going to try to determine if this chewing
behavior is season related or not.
