217.0. "Mollucan talk" by KYOA::WOODS () Thu Jul 13 1989 16:39

I have had a Lesser Sulfur Crested (Timor subspiecies) cockatoo for
about 4.5yrs now. He can not talk at all but he does a variety a tricks
ranging from marching in place to somersaults. He is a born trouble
maker and loves to explore everything. I also have a 5 month old
domestic Mollucan which is turning out to both a very loving, gentle
bird but also he keeps us in stiches with his off the wall behavor.
He is learning to say hello, but I was wondering if any body can help
me with tips or stories about teaching Mollucans how to talk?

    Stan,

I have a molluccan as well as MANY MANY other species.....They
don't seem to display the ability of speach as well as many of the
other varieties of parrots....(Someone may disagree, but this is
my experience.) The Cockatoo is much more adaptable to doing tricks
than its ability for speach...then again, speach ability depends
on the time spent with the bird developing this ability. I would
guess that yours displays the same tendencies that others do such
as stomping the feet on the perch, and shaking their head real quick
together with the raising of the crown?

Hope you have better luck than average.........

217.2foot stompin'KYOA::WOODSThu Jul 13 1989 16:597
He does not stomp his feet but he does ruffle his feathers and turns
his head upside down while making human baby-like sounds along with
a sort of computerized talk. On occasion he has let out a just about
perfect hello but not always. Have to go.

    any more input welcome .......thanks

    This is great!
Our Moluccan isn't crazy after all! He stomps his foot, utters
hello, screeches at the top of his lungs.

Thanxs, for letting the sunshine in.

    Lise,

Last week I had my lesser out on my hand near Sammy's (Moluccan)
cage when all of a sudden behind me I heared a sort of drunken "open
the door". I turned around and said to Sammy, did you say open the
door? and ;he said it it again! He saw me playing with Billy and got
jealous and wanted to get out bad enough (I guess) to say it. Since
then he pronounces it a lot more clearly and more often on que. I also
found out later that my wife would always go up to Sammy's cage and
say "does Sammy want Mommy to open the door?" It seems that taht is
where he picked it up from and is smart enough to associate it with
    getting out.
