HELP! For about the last 2-3 months no my Budgies have been breeding, but the problem is there eggs will not hatch. So i have been told, if the egg is red when put to the light then there should be a chick inside. Most of the eggs we have had were red, but still no chicks. I have tried many things like taking the male and female away from the rest of the birds, but that still does not work. the female seems to sit on the eggs for 2-3 weeks and then lose intrest in them. 210.1 | Remove nestbox & try again next year. | MUNCSS::BURKE | Mon Jul 03 1989 14:10 | 29
Andy, We have two cockatiels, and have had similar experiences: 1. The female seems to know when the 'sitting' period has elapsed. With our cockatiels, I think this was about 22 days. Around the 21st, she would abandon them. We did get two chicks the second time we let them mate. However, the third time was not successful and we had experiences similar to what you describe. 2. Do not allow these unsuccessful procreative attempts to continue - it wears down the female. She's probably looking a bit bedraggled now. I would advise you to remove the nestbox, and try again next year. 3. I don't know what effect the 'other birds' you mention would have. Could they disturb the process ? I do know that if they are regularly disturbed (ie. aggressively defending the nestbox when someone passes closeby), then hatching is unlikely. 4. Apparently two inexperienced birds have little chance of hatching on the first attempt. Have either of yours participated in a successful hatch/rearing ? To summarise; I think that you should remove the nestbox ASAP. Perhaps do it gradually, removing one egg per day,... Hope this is of some use, Jim Burke
210.2 | BUDGIES CRACK EGGS JUST FOR A YOKE. | REPAIR::BAREFIELD | Tue Jul 04 1989 03:44 | 16
The other birds we have are cockatiels and loadsa budgies. The cockatiels dont give the budgies any hassle at all. what i do find is that the female budgies that are not expecting sit outside the breeding boxes and wait for the female to come out.Then what happens is they try to get into the box and sometimes smash the eggs or throw them on the floor. Anyway i still have one budgie sat on about four eggs so maybe i'll be lucky this time round. Andy_B
210.3 | 2 boxes per hen please | SVCRUS::KROLL | Wed Jul 05 1989 23:15 | 5
rule for breeding in coloney breeding is 2 nest boxes per feamale other wise you will get dead chicks & scrambled eggs. just the valance of fighting or being startled off the nest will rupture the veins in a growing chicks egg. thats is why sometimes you will see the veins and then later the egg does not hatch. |
