195.0. "Cruelty to birds..." by CSC32::K_WORKMAN (HSC/SHADOW Tech Leader 522-4990) Tue Jun 13 1989 16:04

Doug... I can't remember the note you posted it in, but did you
ever get your Orange Wing? What are their personalities like?

I have just aquired a Timneh and an Orange Wing both with pretty
horrable back grounds. I felt so sorry for them I am helping
to put an end to their abuse and give them a good home. I need two
more birds like I need a whole in the head but....

The Timneh (his name is Spooky) is missing an eye and has been
pinioned. Pinioned is a very cruel way of preventing a bird
from ever flying again. They break the wing at the elbow. This
method is really not practiced these days because of its cruelty.
The Orange wing isn't in much better shape.

These birds where found in a house in Denver in a room the size
of a bathroom. The room had NEVER been cleaned and they had
rabbits running around in the same room. Apparantly a 50
lb bag of sunflower seeds was left so they wouldnt starve.
My Vet was called and took the birds. They have been through
a battery of blood tests etc to check for psitticosis , liver
disorders, kidney disorders etc. Supprisingly their white
count was pretty low but where still put on antibiotics for
30 days. They had parasites and the orange wing will probably
die in the next few years with kidney problems. They checked
    out safe fortunately.

I'm not sure what I'm going to do with these guys, but I'm seriously
considering using the Timneh as a breeder after about a year of
rehab. The Orange wing is much to fragile and will just live out
his life as a "pet". Spooky is pretty friendly, but the Orange
Wing is extremely paranoid of all people. I don't blame him!
The Orange Wings diet is such that it won't cause his kidneys
    much stress.

Seeing these two birds and hearing about what they have been
through brought tears to my eyes. I just had to take them
so long as they where not carrying any nasties. I just wonder
how many more birds are suffering like these guys did.

    Karen,

I never did find out much about Orange Wings, but the ones I have
seen in stores seem to be much milder that the other Amazons. I
am sorry that these brids were mistreated, but am glad they are
    in a good home now.

    Good Luck,
    Doug
195.2Best of Luck to you!COMET::EAGERWed Jun 14 1989 19:1513

What about the smucks who did this to these birds. Tell us they
suffered or will suffer. Personally they should be knee-capped and
    left to suffer.

Good luck with them. If you decide to breed the Timneh and need
a mate, contact me. I know a Dealer here in the springs that has
been able to get me a number of birds at very good prices. She has
a direct contact at a quarantine station in Califonia. I think she
could get you a good price on a mate. I just ordered 3 pair of 5-6
year olds for breeding purposes, and the price was great!

    Hi Mark,

We need to meet! Your contact wouldn't be Ilsa by any chance?

Re: THE SMUCKS! I believe the home was abandoned, with just
the animals left inside and for how long (?). You should see
this poor little Timneh, Spooky. He is in sad shape. I'm
gonna do the before and after pictures on him.

Thanks for the reply and give a call, 522-4990 or 495-0022.

    Thanks again

195.4ORANGE WINGS ARE GREAT BIRDS!SVCRUS::BUCCIERIFri Jul 07 1989 15:4724
    Hi Karen,

I heard about your note and I haven't had a chance to reply until
now. I have an orange wind that is approximately 8 years old.
I purchased him second hand about a year ago. The previous owner
kept him on a leash with full wings and he reportedly yanked the
bird around. Anyway, Flash is a permanent member of a kind and
loving family. He will scream, growl and act like he will amputate
your hand at the wrist but he really is a pussy cat. They tend
to be one person birds. Flash has never tried to bite me but he
has shown some degree of aggression towards the ladies in the house.
I think he has reached sexual maturity and I am considering breeding
    him with another orange wing.
Flash and I have a conditional trust. He will allow me to scratch
his head most times and will get on my hand all the time. He loves
to be out of his cage and usually becomes more affectionate when
it is time to go home for the night. Orange wings are not very
good talkers but that doesn't stop them from trying. Orange wings
are great pets and it is very disturbing to hear how that particular
    bird got treated.

    Good Luck with them.
