I had a scare the other night Buddie (my budgie) was at the kitchen table with me and stretching his neck like he was trying to throw up. I thought he was fooling around and just acting silly untill he didn't stop. I examined him closely and it appeared that his chest or crop was severly indented. I panicked and didn't know what to do. I thought back to when he was younger(he is 4 months now) and was told not to let him go with out food too long. Although he had been in his cage hour before I thought maybe there was nothing in his seed dish that he cared to eat. So I offered him some fresh seeds, he ate a couple then shook his head and sprayed me with the few seeds he had eaten. He proceeded to gorge himself with the seeds and his chest filled back up and has been fine since. Any inputs ? Was I starving my baby or what ? Doug

He was probably choking. I got a scare like this when I was hand feeding my baby Hahn's. She got a piece of cheerio stuck in her crop or something (maybe on the way down). I was weaning her at the time and it gave me a REAL scare. We noticed her acting strange and the main thing is to REMAIN CALM. I started massaging her crop and neck. Since I figured that it might be hard and this was causing the obstruction, I started putting distilled water in a syringe and squirting some in her beak and more massaging. After a few minutes, she was able to choke it up. Needless to say, I was exhausted. This happened about twice during her weaning. I was fortunate to have an understanding boss to let me arrange my work schedule around the hand feeding and weaning stages. Ed |
