130.0. "little shop of horrors" by TLE::THORSTENSEN () Tue Feb 28 1989 13:02

My interest in birds has always been with wild birds,
but after following this notes file for a few months,
I thought I'd start looking into getting an 'indoor'
    bird.

This weekend I took my first trip to a pet shop ...
I was *very* surprised by what I saw, so I want to
ask if these things are *normal*. The store had a wide
variety of small birds that seemed to be healthy, but
lived in cramped quarters. A few of them lacked
    'spunk' and weren't very active.

There were a half dozen larger birds. They were out
of their cages, being touched and fed by customers.
Since a few of them tried to bite the customers, I
wondered how wise this was, but ...

The worst part was the condition of the large birds.
Every one had tattered feathers, several had bald
patches, several had 'dandruff,' and one had blood
on it's feathers. One poor bird just sat and shuddered!
I spent about an hour watching the birds and asking
people who seemed to know what they were doing about
the condition of the birds. Several customers told me
that birds 'always pull out their own feathers'...
'naturally look scruffy' ... and 'that's not dandruff,
    just skin flakes'.

So, my question is ... is this normal for birds in a shop?
Are there people who monitor shop conditions? Am I being
    silly?

If this was one of the chain pet store, (D-.P--, W/W, or
De---- Pets) it is pretty much normal. As you will see from most
people opinions it is best to buy from a Breeder.

    Sorry for your unpleasant experience
130.2Pet Shop ProblemsDUNCE::KIRSCHBAUMAnd so it Goes...Tue Feb 28 1989 13:1633

RE: -1

There are several excellent pet shops for larger birds, Fish Nook
in Acton, and Boston Pet are two that I know of.

The problem is that larger birds require, a large cage to avoid
damaging their feathers, and lots of attention and toys to keep
from getting bored. Very few pet shops provide toys and none can
really afford the space to provide a large enough cage.

The more the shop allows the birds out of their cages the better
    the bird usually looks.

However, the BEST way to get a bird is to purchase a HAND FED baby
    directly from the BREEDER.

Birds (unlike the rest of us) are creatures of habit, and once they
get into a bad habit, like feather pulling, it is difficult to reform
the birds. Plus most pet shops feed mainly sunflower seed, `cause
it is easiest and the birds like it. If you buy a pet shop bird,
you HAVE to reform it's eating habits, and that is NOT easy.

Read books, look at birds in shops, and then when you decide what
breed you want, find a breeder. It will cost you a few extra bucks,
but you will reap great rewards.

And as a friend of mine, who knows alot about birds, told me, pick
the breed of bird you like first, and then look for the perfect
    individual...

I have to agree with Doug about the chain pet stores. You will
be better off buying from a breeder. I might suggest going to
the Fish Nook in Acton. (Rt 2a) I just started working there
part time and would like you to see some of the birds they are
offering for sale. The majority of babies that come in are
hand tamed and usually on an employees shoulder during quieter
moments. They have a good selection and most of the employees
there know of breeders to buy directly from!

    Hope this helps!
130.4FSTTOO::WIMMERTue Feb 28 1989 14:0110
There are some decent "pet shops".....look for the ones that carry
only birds or at least specialize in birds. There you will "usually"
find more knowledgable people who provide better care and quarters
for the birds. There was a previous note here that talked about
    a few of these stores.

The worst is when you walk into someplace like K-Mart or Ann and
Hope and see one lonely little cockatiel sitting in a tiny budgy
cage with no food and water..............................I always
want to go shoot the manager!
130.5Stay Away from this store!BOSHOG::WRONSKIThu Mar 02 1989 13:1418

I don't know which store the original noter was commenting on, but
it brings to mind the new pet store in Sears-Town Mall in Leominster
Ma., whose birds are just as described in the original note... The
birds are in tight, cramped quarters and the larger parrots are
awful looking (tattered feathers and just an over-all unhealthy
appearance).... I don't know the name of the pet shop off hand,
but I have been in there many times to look around and I find the
conditions for the birds to be AWFUL!!! it's just a shame .....

Poeple buying from these stores just don't know what a healthy
Parrot SHOULD look like..... and another thing the prices are not
    cheap at all $1500.00 for a scruffy/unhealthy Yellow-Nape
    Amazon is a bit high!!

    Stay away...

a breeder for that matter) in an open notes file.

130.7Burn Burn and Burn again!WILKIE::VALERIWed Mar 15 1989 15:5224
I just have to spend my 2 cents here! No birds, in good health
sit and shudder with blood on their feathers. I'm willing to bet
the bird mentioned in the base note was a parrot of amazon decent,
and his eyes were most likely closed or at half mast. All the feathers
were broken and puffed out. And, definately dull, lackluster!
To be so bold as to take it one step further, the droppings were
probably bright green, watery and very few in comparison to what
should normally be there. If this bird is suffering from a bacterial
problem from stress, the stool could be bloodied somewhat alerting
a case of enteritis! These conditions make me ill!

Yes, there are people to control this! First it's US! You take
good notes of what you see, then contact the local state veterinarian
and lodge a written complaint. They take it from there and your
    identity is not disclosed!

Cramped quarters bring out the carnivour in a bird! Etc. Etc!
Sorry to seem like a warm flame, it just kills me that these things
    still continue!

Now, off my soap box all!

HERE IS A REPLY TO LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS...
MY WIFE DIANA STARTED PLAYING WITH A "ORANGE WING PARROT"IN A PET
STORE,IN THE SEARS TOWN MALL IN LEOMINSTER LAST CHRISTMAS.

THE PET STORE ATTENDANT PROMISED TO HOLD
THE BIRD AND NOT SELL HIM UNTIL WE RETURNED...NO CASH DOWN.
WHEN WE WENT BACK TWO DAYS LATER THE BIRD HAD BEEN SOLD,THE STORE
MGR. WAS VERY RUDE IN TELLING US (AND THE ATTENDANT)THE STORE ONLY
HAD 1 ORANGE WING,AND IT WAS FOR SALE. A DIFFERENT CLERK WENT BACK
WITH US AND TOLD US TO "PICK ONE"!!! DIANA AND I SAW A AMAZON WITH
ORANGE ON HIS WINGS,AND THE CLERK PUT FRED IN HIS TRAVEL BOX.

THE MANAGER OF THIS PARTICULAR PET STORE(WHICH
IS PART OF A LARGE CHAIN) WAS RUDE TO US AGAIN IN TELLING US THIS
HAD NOT THE PARROT DIANA HAD BEEN PLAYING WITH AS WE PAID FOR FRED.

FRED APPEARED HEALTHY,THEN HIS NOSTRILS CLOGGED,AFTER A VISIT TO
THE VET WE LEARNED FRED HAD ACUTE SINUSITUS,AND AFTER A TIDER,
PSIDICOSIS. OUR HOUSE IS NOT DRAFTY!!
AFTER BATTLING THE SINUSITUS FOR 2 MONTHS
AND NOT BEING THE ROCKEFELLORS,WE INFORMED THE "PET STORE" OF THE
TIDER,AND SHE TOLD US TO BRING THE BIRD BACK.

A FEW THINGS REALLY SUPRISED US ,ONE IN
THE MGRS. HASTE TO GET RID OF US,SHE SOLD US A MEALY AMAZON(YES
SHE WAS SUPRISED WHEN SHE SAW HIM), TWO SHE ALLOWED THE BIRD BACK
IN THE STORE. AFTER THREE MONTHS OF VISITS,CALLS AND QUESTIONS
DIANA GOT SO DISTRESSED SHE GAVE THE STORE DIST.MANAGER AN ULTIMATOM
THE MONEY,A MEALY,OR COURT. THE CONTRACT OF PURCHASE WAS 120 DAY
REPLACEMENT,AND THEY WERE CLEARLY BRUSHING US OFF,NOT TO MENTION
THEY REFUSED TO ASSIST IN VET BILLS,OR TRY AND SET THINGS STRAIGHT.

WE DID FINALLY RECIEVE A CHECK FOR THE
PURCHASE PRICE OF THE BIRD IT WAS A VERY DISTRESSING SITUATION,
ESPECIALLY FOR DIANA MORE SO THAN I,SHE WAS MORE ATTATCHED.
THE PROPER STATE AUTHORITIES WERE NOTIFIED AS TO THE PROBLEM OF
PSIDICOSIS AND A FEW OTHERS WE ENCOUNTERED.
SINCE THEN WE HAVE BOUGHT A BABY YELLOW
NAPE AMAZON FROM SYLVIA KING(GREAT LADY)NAMED SAM AND WERE ENJOYING
HIM IMMENSELY. BY THE WAY, WE WERE IN AUBURN A WHILE
AGO AND WE SAW FRED IN THE SAME CHAIN STORE,PLUGGED NOSTRILS,SEEMED
UNHAPPY. BACK TO THE PROPER STATE AUTHORITIES,THAT PARTICULAR STORE
WAS QUARENTINED!!! THEY OBVIOUSLY HAD NOT TREATED FRED PROPERLY
SO THEY WERE TREATED PROPERLY. I WISH THIS LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
CHAIN WOULD GO OUT OF BUSSINESS.
       						IF YOUR GOING TO PURCHASE
A BIRD OR OTHER ANIMAL,LEARN FROM OUR MISTAKE AND DEAL WITH A REPUTIBLE

I discovered a NEW SHOP OF HORRORS this weekend. Although they don't
have large birds Childworld in Fitchburg now has the most flagrantly
inhumane pet dept I have seen.

About 12 finches in a 12"x 12 cage, with one perch lined from wall
    to wall with the finches.

    2-3 12"x 12" cages with 8-10 budgies in each.

This was advertized as a Hartz display.

Chilworld is primarily a toy store and it seems they consider
birds, fish rodents and chameleons as toys. I told the cashier that
I had just seen their pet dept and that it was verry inhumane and
digusting , and that even Woolworths had more class than them. The
    cashier agreed with me.

As I have Kids I make lots of trips to Chilworld, In the future
I will do my best not to do bussiness with them.

Ken, You notified the proper athorities on Doctor Pet, Please let
me know who the proper authorities are and where they can be reached.
Sorry to hear about the problems you had with DR P.

130.10STOP BUYING-START SIGNINGMEMV01::STWP04Wed Aug 16 1989 19:1128
My husband and I got interested in purchasing a parrot late last
winter. We went to different pet stores to see what the different
breeds looked like, bought and read many books, and were not yet
ready to buy. We went into the store mentioned in the basenote
and other replies, saw an orange-wing Amazon in a budgie cage,
disheveled but alert. We asked the price: $99 special, no guarantees,
24 hour turnaround on returning the animal if it died in that period
of time (no kidding), and we would have to pay for the autopsy to
get our refund. This was the beginning of April. We bought the
bird. Stupid, yes, but we succombed to the "rescue" syndrome.
The bird was pronounced sound by the vet, but stressed due to
conditions. We were lucky. Many months later the plummage is
still a mess, but the bird is a member in good standing of our
household. We have gone back to look in the store since then and
have almost "rescued" two Goffins who are *both* in a budgie cage,
that means together, with no room to move, but we continue to resist.
The owner of a reputable pet store (mentioned several times in this
Notes file by others) told us the best defense against abuse of
the animals is to resist the temptation to buy the birds and get
a complaint filed with the MSPCA. The MSPCA has to see the
transgression in progress, so it does no good to "rescue" the bird,
take it home, and therefore remove the "evidence" needed, as cruel
as *that* sounds. The old saying of "put your money where your
mouth (heart) is, does NOT apply here - put your signature on a
complaint form instead. As long as the birds keep leaving the stores,
the store owners can claim that there is a demand for their stock,
no matter how sad the condition is, and claim that the public *wants*
    what they have to sell!!
