123.0. "Hand-fed Lovebirds: Info/Advice Needed!" by AKOV12::SELESKY () Tue Feb 21 1989 13:25

          "Interested in a Hand-fed Lovebird and Info/Advice"

I am a temp working at Digital in Acton. I've been here over a
month and have been reading pet bird notes whenever I get a chance.
I am a bird lover and own 12 finches (4 species; I had l successful
breeding of a pair of cordon bleus 2 years ago--3 babies, 2 of which
I still have) and l budgie (lost l to a liver ailment a few weeks
ago). I subscribe to Bird Talk and have been enjoying the notes
in this file. I take sick birds to Dr. Kilgore in Littleton. I
tried to call Jean H. last night and will try again tonight. My
main question is, "Does anyone own a lovebird?" I'm considering
buying a single lovebird as a pet (and hopefully friend to my budgie)
instead of a 2nd budgie. I've never had a larger bird than a budgie
and have been reading about lovebirds. Sounds like a single one
could make an affectionate and outgoing pet (and hopefully healthier
than budgies). I've also been thinking about a cockatiel. Right
now, though, I'm leaning towards a lovebird, especially after reading
one of the articles on them in Bird Talk and after seeing 2 gorgeous
"blackmasked lovebirds" at the Fish Nook. I only want to buy 1 and
I want a hand-fed blackmasked lovebird, if possible. The ones at
the Fish Nook were older and not hand-fed (though locally bred).

Any ideas, suggestions, or advice from people who own lovebirds or
know where I can get a blackmasked hand-fed young bird? Thanks.

The Black masked Lovebirds I know are the ones that have a yellow
body with green flight feathers. I agree the Black Mask are
some of the prettiest of the Lovebirds. If these are the kind you
are looking at I would suggest that you check out what I call the
Blue Mask Lovebirds. I think they are even prettier then the regular
Black Mask. In some areas people refer to them as the yellow Mask
    and the Blue mask.

I currently have five pairs of Lovebirds, including the Both
the Blue Mask and the Black Mask. My pair of black Mask just hatched
three chicks which are a little over two weeks old and doing fine.
They opened their eyes two days ago and have already started forming
feather quills and showing some fuzz color.

If you are looking to provide a friend for your budgie, you
may have a problem. I picked up a BEE-BEE as a friend for my Half-
moon conure and after they got used to each other my conure turned
very protective of his friend and would bite me evey time I came
near them. After I placed them in two side-by-side cages Susie
calmed down and now lets me handle him again,(yes I do have a boy-
    Name-Sue).

I would start by finding someone who breeds Lovebirds and could
provide you with a young hand fed baby. You might check with some
of the bird shops in your area for names of breeders or
contact Bird Talk and get the address to the Lovebird Society,
(I probably don't have the name right). They might be able to give
you the names of some breeders in your area. I would also talk to
a breeder about your plans, just in case there might be some other
problems with mixing those two types of birds, (although I don't
    know of any myself).

I would get the Lovebird used to myself before I put the two
birds together also. That would help reduce the chance of them
becoming buddy-buddy and leaving you out in the cold.

Hope everything works out for you. Keep us informed as to how
    things go.

    					Have A Nice One,
    					     Mark

Hi! This is Jean! Looks like I better remember to answer the
answering machine huh? Well I'm back, for another week. Hopefully
    to ZKO next! Anyway...

Lovebirds....not named for their personality! 8^} Actually, the
'black masked' lovebird is the nastiest of them all! Blue masked
are a little more reserved. I will step far enough ahead to caution
you though...unless you get a hand fed baby, DO NOT ATTEMPT to put
the lovebird with a budgie! That's true 'Fatal Attraction"!

I'd recommend a Blue Mask - hand fed only, then the normal peach
faced. But, it should be hand fed! I have two good friends that
raise lovebirds all the time! If hand fed, and handled all the
time, you have a geat little pet! Hand feds that do not get handled
all the time revert to being wild and mean again.

They don't talk, make a lot of noise, but are the most comical birds
in my aviary!!! I love to watch them, and my husband just loves
the lovebirds! I keep trying to sell them off, he wants to keep
    adding to them!

    Gee, sorry I missed your call!  8^{

I'll be out tonite! (I'm going out, and Doug P is going out, and
    we are going to the same place!!!  Don't tell the spouses!!!  ;-}
Actually, My husband is happy to have Doug along, he has someone
he's comfortable with!) Thanks Doug for bearing up under this
    sarcasim!
    Love and kisses!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi to Mark, Jean and Steve (who VAXed a message):

Thanks for your advice. I'm getting more discouraged now about
a lovebird. I'd love a blackmasked or blue masked (though haven't
seen one of these yet) or maybe even the peach-faced, but I'm getting
fearful about how it would get along with my budgie, who's always
out of the cage. I wasn't planning on putting them in the same
cage but they'd be in the same room, which is small. Maybe I should
just stick with another budgie again. Steve and Windsong Aviaries,
who I called yesterday, seem to be recommending a hand-fed cockatiel
over a lovebird if I decide to try something different than a 2nd
budgie. I've thought of cockatiels before. Windsong has handfed
lovebirds (will have blackmasked in about 7-8 weeks) and handfed
cockatiels and recommends a cockatiel for a real pet (as does Steve
who works part-time at Fish Nook) - and a better companion (less
aggressive) for my budgie. Steve also say the lovebird is loud
screecher. Is this true of a single lovebird in the house? Is
a cockatiel very loud? I love chirping and singing (after all,
I've got 13 birds in a fairly small room already) but don't think
frequent loud screeching would go over big with my husband, who
works on his computer all day in the birds' room.

As for paying the bird attention (i.e., a lovebird needing lots
of handling to remain a tame pet), he would get some attention from
my husband during the day and attention from me when I get home,
but it wouldn't be constant! Also, we are away a lot during the
day on most weekends (I'm a birder and we're both hikers) though
home most evenings. Would this be enough attention for a tame lovebird
or cockatiel? It's been fine for my budgies. I'm a bit confused
now, because I was getting my heart set on a lovebird (they are
quite beautiful and not that big) and articles in Bird Talk had
said they could make gentle, affectionate pets (one letter said
her lovebird was more loving than her budgies and cockatiels and
was especially loving and kissy with her budgie) if gotten single
and hand-fed. Now everyone's saying I could be making a mistake
to have a lovebird with a budgie and that cockatiel would be a better
    choice.

Anymore opinions? I'm going to go to Windsong and look at lovebirds
and cockatiels and talk to more people. Probably won't buy for
    l-2 months yet.

Also, is Windsong a good place to buy hand-fed birds? Any other
recommendations? Jean, do you sell hand-fed lovebirds or cockatiels?
I also have the name of another breeder - Linda Akey. Would she
be a better person to buy from? Jean, if I decide to go with another
budgie, do you have any babies left or will you have new babies
    in a couple of months?

Thanks to all for advice/opinions/recommendations. I don't want
to make a mistake or have a very unhappy budgie and husband.
Unfortunately, we don't have huge amounts of space in our townhouse.

3 if this note becomes #125). Can anybody help me answer a message
within the same note? By the way, my DTN is 244-6724 (at least
for another 4 weeks). Thanks. Sandy (Selesky) @AKO.

123.6COCKATIEL/GREY CHEEKED?WAV14::DESILETSFri Feb 24 1989 08:2616
    HI SANDY,

ANOTHER SUGGESTION THAT I MIGHT HAVE IS A GREY CHEEKED PARAKEET.
WE PRESENTLY HAVE ONE FOR SALE AT THE FISH NOOK THAT IS REALLY
COMICAL. THEY ARE SIMILAR IN SIZE OF THE LOVEBIRD, AND FROM
PAST EXPERIENCE MAKE SUPER PETS PROVIDED THEY ARE GIVEN LOTS OF
LOVE AND ATTENTION. IF I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO GET ANOTHER BIRD
ALONG WITH MY COCKATIEL, IT WOULD DEFINITELY BE A GREY-CHEEKED.
IF YOUR INTERESTED IN THE GREY CHEEK STOP BY ON TUESDAY NIGHT AT
THE FISH NOOK AND I'LL SHOW YOU THE BABY!

    HOPE THIS HELPS!

    Hi Sandy!

Wingsong is a great place! VERY expensive though. Yes, the Akey's
are wonderful people too! They raise nice babies too, but do not
usually hand feed them though. The Akey's number is 880-9804.
Gisele Renshaw raises lovebirds.... 886-0946 (hand feds!)

And yes, lovebirds are a little noisey! I currently have 5 babies
in the kitchen, and 2 that I'll be pulling from the nest tonite
after work! (budgies). Gray Cheeks are great little characters
and Cockatiels are great too! Actually, *I Think THEY are ALL pretty
GREAT!* If your space is really cramped...C.Tiels are dusty...as
I've been corrected and told about...yes, mine are dusty when I
don't spray them all the time! But make nice pets. I'm starting
to fall back into love the the average budgie again though! They
    are not too noisy...nor messy.

However, hand fed or not, if you cage them together, they will prefer
one another over human companionship! Give me a call over the weekend
if you like. I lost your message, the machine is messed up again!

123.11Thanks Again from Sandy; My Mind's Changed Again!AKOV12::SELESKYMon Feb 27 1989 10:5514
Just wanted to thank everyone for their advice. I've decided not
to buy a lovebird and my husband and I think that until we move
to larger quarters, even a cockatiel is too big for the room we
keep our birds in. We're going to buy a second budgie but will
wait until June or July so that Sippy, our present parakeet, will
become more attached to us. He's quite tame now and loves flying
to the finch cages and watching them flit about. The notes here
and a few I received by VAX mail have been extremely helpful. I'm
disappointed but hopefully one day when we have more room we'll
try for a cockatiel or parrot.

We still may look into a grey cheeked parakeet instead of a 2nd
budgie. Are they as gentle and non-aggressive as a cockatiel would
be towards budgies? If no, we'll definitely stick to budgies only.
123.12Additional Message to Jean H.AKOV12::SELESKYMon Feb 27 1989 11:0210
    Jean H.:

Thanks for your last note. I didn't have a chance to call you but
I will one of these days (when my phone bill decreases). Anyway,
I've decided I'm not ready to buy yet (see previous note) thanks
to your advice and the advice of others. Any info re: grey cheeked
parakeet as being gentle enough companion for a budgie? Know anyone
who breeds and hand-feeds them in the Mass. or N.H. area?

I've been wanting some Peach faced Love Birds in the future (when
we buy our own place). I currently have one Cockatiel named Mosi.
He was not hand fed when I bought him. (bought him from Docktor
Pet, I know probably a mistake). He is a great bird. I feel bad
though because I don't have enough time to spend with him. That's
why I don't want to get a larger bird. I think they need someone
who has lots of time to spend with them.

I am leary about getting some more love birds. A few years ago,
I got two black masked love birds for a Christmas gift (the ones
with a blue body). They were bought from a breeder in either
Tyngsboro or Dunstable Mass. They were fine at the beginning.
Very commical. They loved each other and wouldn't separate. If
one would jump on the swing, the other would hop up and they would
swing together. Problems started when I bought a breeding box.
Within a couple of weeks the female layed about 5 eggs. Then she
really didn't want anything to do with the male. One day I found
the male laying on the bottom of the cage, almost dead. I decided
to put him in the box in the nest to give him some comfort in his
dying moments. (They both used to spend a lot of time in the nest
and I didn't see much of them). Big mistake. She killed him off.
I called the breeder and he did an autopsy. I only had the birds
for two months and figured they were sick when I got them. He said
the the cause of death was the female stuck her claw into his heart.
I don't know. I really think he was sick and she killed him because
she didn't want him near the eggs. She died a few weeks later.
He never offered to replace them, and I didn't push the issue.
I probably would have now. Why would two love birds die within
12 weeks. I really should have don't some research before attempting
to breed them too. I was young. About 20.

Anyone have any ideas? Are black masked love birds really that
nasty ? (.2, I believe Jean mentioned that they were the nastiest).
I would like another pair of lovebirds (peached face) because they
could keep each other company. I realize that they are not the
best companions for people but I really just enjoy watching them.

    Thanks, Pam
123.14Black-Masked Lovbirds - Murderers ???MAGOS::RODRIGUEZ_ELTue Mar 06 1990 15:0028
     Hello from Puerto Rico,

Pam, I currently own and breed five different types of Lovebirds,
(including Black-Masked), and have never had or heard of a case
like yours. During the incubating period the male feeds the female
from his crop and spends long hours in the nestbox with her. The
couple may have arguments, but either bird will know when to back
off from a serious aggression. If you did not notice any signs of
physical injury the first time you found the male on the bottom of
the cage it is obvious he was sick, and having the female die a few
weeks after is another reason to believe they were sick. The female
in her attempt to rid her nest of a dead/sick bird may have caused
the injury the breeder said caused his death.

It would be hard to tell if the birds were sick when you bought them
or not. If you are still considering to get another pair of lovebirds
try to get them from a responsible breeder and examine them closely
for signs of illness (wet vent feathers, watery eyes, nasal discharge,
protruded chest bone, rufulled feathers, etc.).

Hope this helps, and good luck!
