I was talking to a Friend today and she related a problem that her friend had with a cockateil. It seems that her two cockatiels had six eggs and would only care for 3 of them. She incubated the remaining 3, hatched one of them and hand raised it. Its name is Squirt. Squirt has one problem He indulges in water until his Crop is over-full. When he is overfull he is noticeably uncomfortable and his droppings are runny(hence the name Squirt). Her Vet attributes it to not being raised by the parents and says to ration its water. When ever Squirt is out he make a bee-line for the sink to hunt down any left over water droplets. It seems the problem is solved by rationing his water, but I thought someone out there may have had this problem and could help explain it. Doug

Hi, it's Jean! Have a CBC run on the birds blood. It could well be avian diabetes! The CBC will cost around $19. If you can draw the blood yourself, you can save a $30 vet office call, and stress on the bird. If you live near me, I'll help you then you can take the blood to your vet. How can you find out about sugar problems with a complete blood count? Would it not be better to do a glucose test? or is that possible for birds? |
