Ever since I can remember, I've wanted to have geese. It seems
that I'll finally be able to get a few this spring. However,
I haven't the slightest idea how to care for them...
Do they need their wings clipped?
Will they imprint on me if I get them as hatchlings?
Do I need a permit in Massachusetts?
What kind of fence will keep them safe from dogs?
Do they need a heated shed for winter?
Any information or pointers to good resources would be
appreciated.

I know a woman who has pet geese. I tried to convince me SO that
I needed a baby geese when these pet geese had babies, but had no
luck. What I remember is that they ate Purina Goose Chow and that
they had no protection from this woman's 2 chocolate labs.
I'll try to find out some more infor for you.

I had Muscovy ducks when I was growing up on Cape Cod. They are
large ducks and behaved much the same as Geese. I used to clip their
wings to keep them from flying away and in the safety of their cage.
I raised aroung 200 in a period of 8 years and the only one I could
say was bonded was my original male. I kept them in an enclosure
that was 4 foot high chicken wire with no top. Skunks, racoons and
neighborhood dogs would occasionally get at them, but being large
Ducks/Geese, they could usually defend themselves. They didn't need
a heated shed, just one that offered shelter from the elements.
As far as permits I beleive you would only need one for Native birds
not Domestic ones.
