93.1 | Some thoughts... | CSC32::K_WORKMAN | Hand picked by Juan Valdez | Wed Jan 11 1989 19:25 | 24 |
| Hi Fran,
The bump could be many things. The best is to have it looked at
by a Vet to be safe...
Here are some thoughts. If the bump is located at a joint it
could be a form of arthritis. If you can determine that it is
fluid filled, it could infact be a cysts. I did some reading and
found that most of the time, cysts are more commonly found around
glandular areas, but can form almost anywhere. It could also
be the result of a small injury. There is something called
Periostitis. This is when new bone forms over an injured area
and leaves a hard lump. Your Scaly Leg (a form of Mange or mite
infestation) could not be completely over. Some parasitic bugs
live on the surface layers of the body and some of these are the
burrowing type. I know that old age in birds can bring about
things like vericose veins. Maybe this is normal for your
birds aging process but then again... I would definately check
with your vet. If you don't feel a trip to the vet is in order,
I would definately keep an eye on this bumb for any signs of
change. These are only guess's. I hope this information
helps you!

thanks, Karen
From her age I think your suggestion of maybe arthritis may be nearest
the truth as that area feels very hard. I wanted to take her to
the vet but the weather has been so very cold and along with her
age and how frightened she is of strangers I have to think it over
wether I should risk the trip. She is not picking at the area,
she she seems more uncomfortable than anythin. she is adapting to
it to as I have moved all her food to the top perch area so that
she doesn't have to do much climbling if any.
Other than the leg problem she is still frisky, chirpy and has an
excellent appetite as she has always had.
I am so happy to have had her for so very long and am doing my best
to keep her comfortable.\
Thank you again,
Fran

| I would definately agree with you on the vet. Don't take her if
she seems to be okay. That maybe more detrimental that anything.
Keep an eye on the area for any change. Please let us know how
she is doing! I worry...

Karen
my husband and I have made Crissy a partially padded perch last
night that is slightly higher on than the perch but comes even to
the height she lifts her leg that has the bump on it. When she is
near it and uses it she cna stand up straight but it evedently
feels foriegn to her as she shys away from it most of the time.
maybe in time she will use it more and if she senses it relieves
the the pressure. other than that, my little bird is still very
playful, but I have to face up that she is not young anymore and
age is setting in in many ways on her. it is difficult...

| I have known Canaries that lived to 15 years! You maybe
suprised with Crissy! Good environment, lots of love etc.,
birds, even the little ones can live for a long time!
I'm glad you are so concerned. Crissy is so lucky to have
you!

93.6 | crissy doing well | ASABET::F_SPINNEY | | Wed Jan 18 1989 09:35 | 10 |
| Crissy is doing well. She has taken to the padded side if the perch
and likes to eat there. She is still favoring her sore leg but
I have been treating the area with linoments and it seems to have
eased the discomfort and it hasn't gotten any worse nor has it
gotten better. But she seems more relaxed now and is no longer
all fluffed up and quiet. she is very energetic and still has a
great appetite especially loves honeysticks and millet spray!!

93.7 | How is Crissy? | CSC32::K_WORKMAN | Hand picked by Juan Valdez | Wed Jan 25 1989 18:55 | 6 |
| Fran,
How is Crissy doing? Is she still enjoying her new padded
perch? Any change in the bump?

93.8 | hi! | ASABET::F_SPINNEY | | Mon Jan 30 1989 09:32 | 15 |
| HI!!
she is doing pretty good. I have tried a dozen remedies and I am
not certain which one has seemed to ease the pain she was obviously
experincing. She has taken well to the perch and prefers to eat
from there. Then I read in a book that she might have something
called "bumblefoot" so I treated tht with peroxide...then I read
that it may be an infection foun in older budgies and that said
treat it twice a day with iodine..so I've been doing that..problem
with this one is that you also need to put some heat on it to drw
out the infection and she is just too frightend for that.
BUt all in all is is getting around very well and favors
the sore leg less than before.
Thank you so much for asking!
