78.0. "Nape info" by SYSENG::FORTNEY () Tue Dec 27 1988 10:29

We are considering a Yellow Nape Amazon and could use some info.
What is the usual price range of these birds?? I've seen them
from a little under $1000 to about $1300. This seems like a lot.
Is it just New England? My sister on the West coast paid about $350
for her Sun Conure and they're about $700 here. Anyway, are there
any good sources for Napes in this area?? Preferably we'd like
    to obtain a hand-fed baby.

    Comments appreciated.

    Hi Rey,

there is a 2 year old hand fed nape in the for sale note here, topic
#13. The price for a wild caught bird is around $350...hand feds
however are much much more. Depending upon how early the babies
are pulled from the nests and hand reared, the prices could be higher.
I've seen aviaries selling baby napes for $1,800!

We can get Sun conures too for about $350...you have to 'know' who
    to ask! Does this help???

I was at Fish Nook in Acton yesterday and they had a had fed baby
Nape for sale. They also had a baby Lilac Crowed. They were both
beautiful birds. I'm sorry I don't remember the price.

Napes can be very expensive, when I was shopping for an Amazon I
was after a Yellow_Nape myself and a hand fed baby was running
about $1000.00 (and that was 2 years ago)..... in buying a bird
you really only get what you pay for a lot of times... try buying
the youngest bird possible (the younger they are the easier they
are to train and talk), but the younger the bird the higher the
    price. I bought a Blue_Front (Baby) instead of a Yellow-Nape,
I happened to find the right bird at a fair price, he was expensive,
but worth every penny..... and he was already tame and starting
    to talk.....

    Good luck.....

Yes, I do want the youngest possible bird. I have 1 source
that will have babies in a few months and if I get my name
in I can choose one when they arrive. I would like to get
the bird right after it comes off hand feeding. I've seen
probably a dozen napes so far and the nicest one was at
Tropic Isle in Framingham. The bird was 8 months old, DID
NOT want out of it's cage, but once it was out it was
very gentle. Seemed to enjoy being handled. One of the
people at the place said he could get the bird to lie on
its back. It sure is tough to pass up the good birds when you
find one. They wanted $1398 for it. I've got to wait until
    Spring for financial reasons.

    Rey,

Are you buying a hand-fed baby or a baby which has been caught
in the wild (from the nest)? I know of a lady in Clinton, MA
who imports Amazons (Yellow-Napes, etc), her name is Sylvia King
and she has a place right next door to the Shaw's Market. When
I was looking for a bird (2 yrs ago) she was going on a trip
to South America to buy some birds. At that time she was getting
roughly $800.00 for a baby Yellow-Nape.... you might want to
give her a call, somewhere in this file or the Old_Birds file
there is a note on her which contains her phone number, can
anyone help out? She seems very nice and really wants to make
sure that before she sells you a bird that you are going to
care for it properly. If you are looking for a Yellow-Nape she
may have some babies or be getting some soon, so a call is worth
the effort. (But, I forgot to ask, are you in this area? Worcester,
    MA area? ...)

The $1400.00 that Tropical Isle was charging for the Yellow-Nape
sounds high to me, but if you really like the bird and they (
the pet store) provides a health certificate, then the bird is
worth it. Was this a really young bird? (a young Amazon will
look somewhat scruffy, because all of its adult feathers will not
    have grown in).

I think I would prefer a domestic but would consider a wild caught.
I have a few reservations about the wild caught. The most important
being the taming proccess. We want a hands on bird, and want
to be able to enjoy the bird soon after we bring it home. We just
feel that the hand-fed domestic might have a lot less trauma
(quarantine, shipping etc.) and might meet are expectations better.
Does this women breed?? (sounds kinda funny!?!) If not are there
any Y. Nape breeders in the New England area. Oh by the way the
    Y. nape we saw was $1295 and was a little scruffy with just a hint
    of yellow beginning to show.
    Thanks for the info!

    Rey,

Sylvia King (the lady from Clinton, MA) is not a breeder of Yellow
Napes but she imports babys once in a while.... her birds are usually
very young and of very good quality. Sylvia also keeps the birds
for another 30 to 60 days (after quarantine) to ensure the birds
are of good quality and health. She also has an extensive network
and might know of a good breeder in the area and might help you
    locate a nice Yellow-Nape....

I bought a yellow nape from Sylvia in May this year.
I did not have any problems as far taming the bird and
teaching him to talk. In fact, she taught me how to
hand feed and wean him. She charged me $600. but will
start her napes at $800. Somehow I talked her down in price.
My nape is 12 months old and can speak several words, whistles,
cries, and even prrrs like a cat....

I would not buy for that pet store in framingham (tropical something).
The price ($1400) is outrageous. I have heard reports of spoiled
seed at this store, birds illnessess, etc... Every bird that I
have seen at that place was over priced....

I would not worry about the issue of wanting only a domestic nape.
From my experience a young baby imported legally is just as good
    as the domestic baby bird.

In the MA area Sylvia King is the best buy for your baby yellow
nape. Al Decoutiu (sp?) in Dunstable will charge you twice the
prices as Sylvia. Al will charge something like $1500-2000. for
the same baby nape. I would not go through him.

PS My nape loves to take showers with me and laughs when he
gets away with something that isn't allowed.

    Hi Rey

If your not stuck on a yellow nape there is a 4 year old Red Lored
for sale in note 13.15. Hi talks some, will lie on his back, and
laughs wonderfully. I didn't but him as I was interested in Breeding
him and things didn't work out. The owner wants a good home for
him and the price is right.
