| According to the American Heritage Dictionary on my desk the defintions
are:
Aviarist - One who maintains a large enclosure for birds.
Ornithologist - One engaged in the scientific study of birds.
Simply put an aviarist is one who keeps and probably raises birds, and
an ornithologist is somebody who studies birds. In my experience there
are many individuals who are both.
Does this answer your question?

| An ornithologist studies any and/or everything about birds. Ornithology
is one of the few remaining areas of scientific study where amatures
can make significant contributions. Several years ago there was
a housewife who spent all of her free time studying the House Sparrows
in her back yard. The study resulted in her publishing a book on
the life history of these birds. This book is now considered a standard
of excellence in ornithological life history research.
