Hi. I currently share space with Murdock, a Yellow Nape Amazon
and 2 Cockatiels, Chirper & Snowball, who are attempting to
produce a family. So far Snowball's laid a set of 3 eggs in the
cage bottom, ignoring a LOVELY nest box, but they were not
fertile. I'm hoping they have learned something, they sure
did a lot wrong for their first set !!
We also have in the house a canary, Yellow Bird, 2 Toy poodles,
three kids, three adults, and for a while a frog!

I started out about 4 years ago when I was admiring some birds in
a pet store and a lilac crowned Amazon climbed on my shoulder, dragged me over
to the counter, and demanded I buy him on the spot! (Isn't that the way most
people get their first bird? :-) ). Anyway we named him Jake and he now has
two more buddies Roxie a Goffin Cockatoo and Mookey a Timneh Gray. It's
starting to sound like a jungle in the morning but I love it! When I get more
room I would like to add a Scarlet Macaw or a Mulacan(sp?) cockatoo.
Looking forward to following (and hopefully contributing to) this
conference.
Regards,
Chris.

I became a pet bird owner quite by accident when I came home one
day to find a Congo African Grey on our balcony. We never found
his owner so we kept him. Prior to that I didn't know a thing about
caring for a bird. But necessity is a great teacher. I'm completely
fascinated with Max, and that fascination has carried over to other
pet birds, as well as wild ones.

We, that is my boyfriend and I own in total 7 macaws.
We bought 2 scarlets, Unix and C, because we wanted a pet which
was rather unusual. We thought it would not be fair on the bird
to leave it on its own all day, while us being at work, so we bought
two.
And this is how it all started. When we had Unix and C sexed, they
turned out to be both male. In the meantime we both a blue and gold
called moonfleet, who we new was female.
Next step was finding a mate for moonfleet, which we did. We found
Dundee in Muenchen and Moonfleet is certainly very in love with
him.
Having two male scarlets was not a good idea. So we bought two more
young scarlets. We were very surprised and happy when they turned
out to be both female when we had them sexed. They are called Magnus
and Axel, unfortunately they got their names before being sexed.
Now all this left us really without a real pet. The obvious solution
was to buy another one, which we did. Oliver is a green wing macaw
and does speak a few words. This is the only bird we don't know
the sex of, but we guess it is female.
We do enjoy our little zoo.
Wivine.

My second is a Mollucan Cockatoo, Thorin, when I got him he was VERY VERY

lovable as I want him to be but I have not given up yet (I have
had him for 2 years now). Lastly is Bilbo, my Sun Conure, he is
a year old this month, hand fed and VERY spoiled. Noisy but lots
of fun to play with.

I live with Sugar, a second hand blue front Amazon that speaks a
whole one word and loves to have flying/running races in the long
hallway of my apartment building, and sometimes comes when I call
her. Although her speech is limited, her music theory almost has
her whistling a perfect arpegio, but her instincts would have her
prefer to chew the wood of my violin I'm afraid.
This summer I bought a long leg chain and took Sugar for a few walks,
although sometimes it was more like flying a kite! I don't trust
her enough to go for a motorcycle ride yet, but the American iron
didn't frighten her even when I was starting it, so hopefully next
summer we'll try a short one.

I have parrots, cockatiels, a couple of quail, a myna, a bundle of
budgies, and maybe 80 finches? They're housed on three floors of our
home, and the basement refrigerator is filled with seed bags, sprouts,
and veggies. The finches breed well, the parrots are thinking about it,
and the budgies would probably like the option, if I ever get time to
finish making enough nesting boxes.
Our favorite is Merlin, the Timneh. He presides over the the kitchen
from his roost in a 7-foot lilac branch, commenting on all he sees:
"Who cares? ... Wanna be cat food? ... Nevermore!"
We also take in birds, from people who don't have time for the birds,
or who have tired of the screeching. (I wear headphones around Fred,
the Nanday.)
This all started, you see, because my wife, Cindy, gave me a wild bird
identification book for my birthday. She developed into a wildlife
artist and pet bird fancier, and I guess my main role in this
enterprise is as carpenter.

My wife Maggie and I share our house with a Grey Cheek Parakeet

is 15.5 years old and is not going to be around much longer (sniff).
I think Mango is around 6 months or so. I know he is young because

improved a lot and in fact has turned into quite an acrobat. He
loves to worry my wife and hang inverted for long periods of time.
We both love animals of all kinds but only have room for these two
right now. I hope some day to buy a place with a lot of land so
I can get a falcon, or two. Also maybe a horse, a few more dogs...I
know...stop dreaming Steve. That is about it.

I am a neophite bird enthusiast. We have a green singing finch for
1 year. I am doing research on Amazon Parrotts and have an interest
in Yellow Napes or maybe White Fronts. I have learned a lot from
this notes file since I discovered it 2 days ago. My interest started
a couple of weeks ago with an advertisement for a Lowell pet shop
for tame and talking Yellow Napes for $600. My next thought was
to watch for an unhappy owner (due to screeching) and find a real
good deal. I like this file and plan to read it weekly.

Hello,
I have been a silent reader for this note about one month now,
and like to introduce my 'hard-winner', an 6 years old yellow-headed
Amazon called Roope. He is quite a personality. He whistles, laughs
when someone in the room is laughing, says a few words (in Finnish,
of course..) and is very energic fellow. I have been thinking to
get another parrot to company for him, but here in Finland are not
many big parrots for sale. Let's see how we (I and Roope) manage
to find a suitable one, which we both like....
I have enjoyed very much of this conference, and send best regards
for all of you !

I just bought my first large parrot last week, a yellow nape, Piedy
(short for Piedmont). He is under 2, and at present very quiet...I'm
sure this is not typical amazon behavior. He also LOVES to have his
head scratched more than anything else! I am very anxious to see
what Piedy will be like a few months from now!
I have previously owned parakeets, canary-winged parakeet(beebee
parrot?), still own 2 cocketiels.

I am a contractor (4th for DEC) from Edinburgh in Scotland.
We have two Congo Greys (Basil and Lucy), and two cockatiels (Ollie
and Susie). The two Greys are 'as per specification'; that is; Basil
(the male) actively dislikes me, whilst Lucy (the female) allows
me to do anything with her. More or less vice versa for Patricia,
my wife.
They have vastly different characters due to their roots (Basil is
from the Congo, Lucy was hand-reared in Britain), and their diets are
totally different. They only look similar (Basil is *big*).
I am constantly amazed at Basil's intelligence. I have watched him
examine a problem, think about it, then attempt a solution. Nobody
will convince me that these birds have no innate intelligence.
Perhaps in another note, I'll relate something of this. For example;
the day he escaped (free for 4 days without food !).

My fiance and I own a Red Headed Conure ( Mavrick ). A friend
of my sister in-laws found him in there back yard in a tree and
they gave him to us. We have had Mav for about a year and a half
now and enjoy his company very much. He says a few words but only
when *he* feels like it... During the fall my fiance walked out
of the house not relizing he was on his shoulder and Mav went for
a three day adventure. On the third day we spotted him and he flu
back to us, so now he is back home and seems very happy to be there.
He has *quite* the personality. He is about two to three years
old and stands about 6" tall. His coloring is *very* brilliant,
almost like a deep emerald with a head that looks like its on fire...

I share a house, that is actually more like a jungle, especially in the
morning, with 9 feathered beasts. That I love very dearly !! I have a my #1
man, Buddie a Nanday Conure, (affectionately, know as "Dude" by all my friends)
whom I acquired one late afternoon, when he landed on my head while I was eating
an apple out by the pool, haven't been able to shake that "Dude" since. He is
VERY spoiled, has his own pillow for those Sunday mornings when I want to sleep
past 06:30, UGH !!! and does many tricks, including "playing dead". Then there
is the o' great obnoxious one, Sugar, a Severe MaCaw, a very sinster lady, she
says Hello when the phone rings, curse's like a sailor when men walk into the
room (previous owner) and will have you believe that she likes you till you turn
head and then tries to take your finger off, she can be very rude, and learned
to do all the disgusting bodily functions noises, like passing gas, and burping
which is always fun the first time someone new comes over !! Then there is
Mickey, Yellow Nape Amazon, who has a very large vocabulary, sings many nursery
rhymes, and has his own skateboard. Well there are also Trixie & Bandit a
mated pair of Cockatiels, and that is all they do (mate, all the time), there is
also Oliver, Welby & Budgie, my Parakeets, then the noisiest of all a Roller
Singing Canary, named Charleen, who should be renamed Charley, I have grown to
be able to sleep through everyone's noise, but his !!!
Well looking forward to conversing with you all !!!

I've been reading all about every body here for about a month
and I thought it's about time I turned into a notes writer as well
as reader. Hope I don't mess this up somehow - this is my first
time writing to notes.
My family consists of two peach faced love birds (Max & Marli) a
conure (Woody), a grey cockatiel (Flipper, who I got thru this file)
and an orange weaver (Lady Finch). They are all very vocal,
unfortunatly they don't actualy say anything that could be considered
talking yet (although Woody seems to be trying very hard latly to
make new noises).
RE.13.24 I spoke to Jean last night and will be going to a NHAS
meeting with her tomorrow night. I'll ask her when she may be back
and tell her she's missed in this note.

| Hello all. Well, I've leaped into the ranks of bird people,
and I am now a mommie for at least the next 20 years (oh
my gawd!! {:-\ ) ...is that how long cockatiels live?
big grins ;-}
Oh yeah! I'm Karen and I live in Milford, New Hampshire.
Jean, maybe you'd let me visit your aviary? I purchased
a hand-fed baby cockatiel, a normal grey one, male. He
is very sweet and unafraid. It has taken me a week to
realize that noises I make don't startle him (I haven't tried
the vacuum around him yet). I can skrinkle a bag of nacho
chips or rustle the newspaper and he could care less. He
likes it when I read, especially magazines with color photos.
He seems attracted to color and to all those little black
letters on the pages :-) . And it took me a whole week
to realize that I don't have to mince around when he's on
my shoulder. He likes it when I just walk around normally,
and sometimes he really gets into it, digs his needle claws
into my shoulder and flaps his wings like crazy.
In fact, it's a week ago today that I brought him home!
Seems longer...hmmmmmm. Probably because of all the seed
hulls in and on my couch. Ahem. Oh yeah, and I'm already
thinking about getting him a pal - another hand-fed baby who
won't be ready to go for another few weeks.
Who was it that said that one equals three in bird land?
Anyway. Glad to be here, and I've really enjoyed reading this
Notesfile. As a matter of fact, it's everyone here's fault
that I got into this hobby. If everyone hadn't written about
how nice and cute their pets were I may still be living the
free, bachelorette life today! Instead I have a little mouth
to feed now, and I have to be home every night and arrange for
babysitters if I want to go away..... It's all your faults.

| Hi, I'm Ian Kalinosky. My quest for a pet bird is detailed in note
149.
I'm looking for a parrot to fill the void left by the loss of my
geese. Until December, I had 5 pet geese, (3 of which I raised
from day-olds). When we moved to a our present home in December,
I had to give up my pets as the area here is too urban for geese.
Luckily, I was able to find a great home for them, but my wife and
I miss their companionship and hope that a parrot will be as good
a pet as our gaggle was.
Stay tuned to note 149!

Gary Knighting here. My SO gave me the bird for my birthday.
His name is Kitaro (we think -- he hasn't said one way or the other
yet), and, judging from his temperament and vocal sounds, he's a
cross between an Orange-Wing Amazon and a wolverine. We've only
had him for about a week; we rescued him from a pet store. He looked
like something a cat threw up at first, but he's improved a lot
already (although it is indeed no coincidence that "molting" sounds
so much like "revolting").
I find it very interesting to have a parrot -- you see, I'm
really into blood blisters. I also like the way he can turn his
head almost all the way around. Now I know where the demon from
"The Exorcist" went. This bird is loud, stubborn, mean-tempered,
finicky, rude, and has gross personal habits. In fact, he's so
much like me, I think we're gonna get along fine.
BTW, does anybody know if parrots repeat what they hear most
often? If they do, Kitaro's first words will almost certainly be
"OW! S**t!" Well, I gotta go now. I just got a Sears catalog,
and I want to see if they have any electric parrot prods.

I am so happy to have found this conference. I have two White-
Fronted Parrots (M+F) whom I hope will produce babies some day.
Orson was my first, he is hand tame and talking. My son who is
4 has no problem handling him. Teddy was brought up from Florida
she is a sweet bird but does not talk. When I put the two together
Orson became very protective of Teddy. Now the only way I can play
with Teddy is to put Orson in the cage. Needless to say he gets
very angry with me.
I also have two Chinchillas, Two children (M+F) and last but
not least a husband.
My brother has a bird farm of the west coast of Florida, if
anybody is interested in hand fed babies send me mail.

So glad I found this conference. At present I own 2 budgies, Lymon
and Wanda. I have considered breeding but have not made a final
decision yet. I have owned budgies off and on for the past 10 years.
I have also owned larger birds - a yellow nape and 2 timneh greys,
but found that working full time, school at night, and 3 dogs and
2-4 cats was more than enough. All large birds are now in VERY
good homes and I hope to have another large bird in the near future
when I can retire from full time work outside the home. This time
I will be able to make a more educated selection as unfortunately
I learned the hard way about large birds. Therefore I am a fanatic
when it comes to education of the public. I also do bird sitting
on occasion and have a client that has an aviary of approx 10 pairs
of breeding birds. I am an avid follower of the canine and feline
files.

I have many pets and I will list them below: We do charge admission

2 Parakeets
2 Cockatiels
1 Nanday Conure
1 Timnah African Gray I had him for 1 1/2 years now he talks
1 Yellow winged Amizon Owned for about 6 months at this writing
1 Congo African Gray Owned for 2 months he is 1 year old
1 Guinea pig
1 Hooded rat
1 30 gallon fresh water fish tank
I have raised Budgies in the past successfully.
I also do Bird grooming in customers homes. It is a real treat
for me to go to the home and see the bird in its enviornment and
to do some minor consulting if necessary.
When I go to groom the bird it includes Clipping the wings if the
onwer wants it, Clipping the nails and trimming the beak if necessary.
I have a hand held sand stone that is great for trimming the toe
nails. I have the larger stone for the bigger birds beaks.
Going to the birds home is less stressful to the bird and the owner
does not turn out to be the bad guy and can console the bird after
I have finished the grooming process.
Thanks for the opportunity to talk to people that have the same
interest as I do.

Hi everyone! I'm also new to notes so I hope this works. My
husband throughly suprised me and our two cats last night by
bringing home 2 white doves. We're told they are male and female,
and for lack of something more creative I have named them George
and Gracie. George (I think) is very messy and loves to throw
all his food out of his dish. Gracie is quieter and much neater.
Gandalf and Tigger (our cats) aren't quite sure what to make
of their new roommates.
I had a grey female cockateil a few years ago that took off when
my husband took her outside one day. She was a super pet, though
a nervous one. The doves seem pretty sedate and willing to
put up with a lot. They are hand trained and I think will be
super pets. I'm just glad we have their cage hanging from the
ceiling away from the cats. Just call me a nervous mother.
Anyway, I know absolutely nothing about doves so any info anyone
can give me will be helpful. From reading all the intros I
know these aren't nearly as exciting as most of the birds I've
read about, but their part of our crew now and I want to be a
good parent.
Glad to get to know you all!

Hi everyone - this is the first reply to a notes file for me, so I hope
it works. At our house we have an 5 yo African Grey who's a feather
plucker and a 2?yo Blue-front Amazon who's a real bruiser. Guess who's
the boss? (He has a red tail!) My partner adopted Birdie the grey and
we adopted Buddy, the Amazon last year. Both were nasty when they
first arrived since they got little attention, but I'm happy to say
they're both friendly now. Except for a little bickering, they both live
together in a very large cage and get along well with our two cats and
one dog. I'm looking forward to reading this notes file; maybe we can

Our household includes my husband, Gary, and I, along with four young
cats (all neutered males) and 21 birds. We had 24, but found a loving
home for our Lutino lovebird and the two pearlie Cockatiels after
deciding the noise was too much in the bird room upstairs. All birds
are in cages, some HOIE, some homemade. We have one male white border
fancy canary that is waiting for a mate (have an order in with Fish
Nook in Acton), two American singers (one red factor male and a brown
and orange female - have set up two clutches, both infertile, so they
are separated for now to give the hen a good rest). We started with
an orange-wing Amazon, who is improving gradually from the condition
he was in when we "rescued" him from a local well-known pet store
chain (see Note 250 and related note from me under note titled Little
Shop of Horrors). We also have two hand-tamed gold-capped conures, who
are delightful, albeit noisy at first in the morning and chew through
perches with amazing speed and indifference (the natural apple ones
last the longest, fortunately). Our five male and eight female budgies
are all different colors, have special personalities with names to
match, and provide welcome chatter and activity in the bird room.
We just started our "aviary" in April. Heaven knows where we'll be
by next year! Our house size will keep us in check for awhile. We're
sticking to the smaller and less expensive birds, but have ended up
investing a considerable amount anyway, what with the many cages we
have now, multiples of seed and water cups, now involved in making our
own birdseed mix, courtesy of Charla Kroll, another town resident and
fellow bird-noter, which has already resulted in improved condition
in the flock, especially the Amazon.
We live in Clinton. My husband, Gary, works in LKG (Littleton, MA), and
I work in ACO (Acton/Piper Road, MA). The PET_BIRDS notes files has
been a wonderful help in connecting with others and finding out how not
to make stupid mistakes! Thanks, moderators, and other bird-noters for
contributing your experience and knowledge for everyone to use in their
own way. This is my first experience using notes on a regular basis.
Now I see how people can get hooked on it!!

right now I am at LMO2 in Marlboro Ma.
The birds at my boyfriends place have allowed me into their humble

Tony: Salmon crested Molcun Cocktoo( my nickname for him is stuffed

no yellow! the ages on the first 3 birds are 10-15 years of age
and Samantha is about 13-14 months old. Very active and going through
the teething age, if you don't mind getten bitten or nipped then
you may pet her.
When we zoom Samantha around on the remote control we say go granny

She picks up everday conversations, so we have to be careful what
we talk about within earshot.
Just wanted to say thank-you for all the help everyone has given
us so far in this conference.

I thought I had already placed an introduction, but apparently
I hadn't.
I am the owner of two peach-faced lovebirds. One of them is a
recent addition, due to the death of Miney, an adorable female.
I was hoping the new addition would be another female and I
think Moe, the male was also longing for a female. Unfortunately
I think the new addition is male. :^(
The solution is to find two females to match up with these
lonely guys. (Maybe I should place an ad in Singles for them).
They keep to themselves for the most part, except for an
ocassional bath in a water glass while I'm drinking from it.
I guess I should tell you about me. I work at FXO in Franklin,
Ma. and live in Clinton, where apparently a majority of the
participants in this notefile reside.

I started with the Fischers, (Lorita & Polly), as a hobby, but

I received a pair of peach faced lovebirds from my husband for
Valentine's Day. They don't have names yet, but they might become
Wolfgang and Constanza, after Mr. and Mrs. Mozart. They seem to
appreciate classical music, especially 17th and 18th century. Vivaldi
really makes them come to life. But if the music skips, they start
scolding severely. This seems to prove they have great musical
sensibilities, but I could also just be a proud mom! They also like
twigs from the trees outside, pine needles, oak, and maple. They like
to do acrobatic dances on them and eat the needles, buds, and bark. I
tried a pine needle, it wasn't too bad, a lot more moisture than you
would think, and a pleasant tangy taste. This conference is very
enjoyable and educational. Thanks,
-Julie

now. He's an excellant talker and is very well behaved 99.99% of
the time. He is cage trained(only poops in or on his cage), he
also lets me trim his beak and nails with no problems. I leave
his wings natural because he is an excellant flier. When I first
got him they were clipped and he would crash alot. Now when ever
he gets the urge to soar he usually takes off from his cage, flies
into the kitchen and flies back to his cage.He can also hover great.
He's better than any dog or cat that I've owned and alot
more affectonate..

My bird "family" (I have dogs, cats & horses too) consists of:
1 Blue Fronted Amazon
2 Nandy Conures (nesting right now)
4 Cockatiels
2 Lovebirds
We have lots of fun and I try to make everythings as comfortable for
all as much as possible. I have more stories that I have time to
think about but when the next "unusual" one comes along or if I find
any "amazing " info. I will write about it. It was comforting to know
my 4 year old Amazon was just doing his/her matting dance a few weeks
ago (I thought he was getting ill or something by the sounds he made)
but after reading some of the previous notes I realized he was just
being "normal". As he get's older every spring is something new...
Thanks for being here...

Tweety is all yellow with red eyes
Skyler is sky blue with grey & white wings
Tiny is aqua.
2 Cockatiels
Bart is 8 mos. old and he is a normal
Lupie is 3 mos. old and is a Lutino
1 Parrot named Rocko. He is a 6 mo. old Mexican
Redhead (also called a Greencheek)
1 Mini-Macaw
Simon is 6 mos. old and he is a yellow

I just started reading the file about a month ago because I was
thinking of getting rid of my last two cockatiels, I would like
to get canaries. I live in an apartment and so far they have tolerated
my disregard for the NO PETS clause.
I have owned many pet parakeets, graduated to cockatiels with the
intent to selective breed but since moving to New England have not
had any luck. My birds all came from Arizona. Flew here quite
successfully in the cargo hold of the plane.
I have a male silver Pearl, with cinnamon in his genes and a female
cinnamon pied head. WeeHawk and Sparkles. WeeHawk comes from a
long line of talkers. He says WeeHawk loves Laura, Hello and wistles
oscar meyer weener, bridge on the river qui, yankee doodle and the
typical wolf and come here wistles.
As for me I work at the Hudson facility, and and live in an apartment

i have two cockatiels, pookie and pookette. i bought pookie just about
a year ago, and my husband bought pookette in july for my birthday.
they are a lovely pair -- except like most couples -- they have their
share of arguments (pookie can now be called spike because pookette
plucked all his head feathers (save one or two), and pookette's ear
feathers have been picked clean -- i have been told not to worry about
it because they are just marking each other to show ownership.).
they are quite good flyers (pookie was a breeder bird and therefore was
not use to being handled; pookette was a hand-raised bird, but she took
over pookie's habit of not liking to held so i leave them unclipped
thereby saving my fingers.).
i also have a cat (kitty), two house rabbits (buggs and midge), two
fish tanks (30 & 55 gallons), and a horse (also named pookie -- i am
not real orginal with names.). my immediate goal is to learn alot
from this conference because my future goal is to buy a hand-raised
cockatoo.

Hi all,
We are in the process of getting a peach-front conure.
My husband has been helping some friends of his move cages,
and installing a water system for their tropical birds.
They wanted to thank us (him) by giving us one of the
hatchlings. She is going to set us up with cage and everything!
Even teach it a couple of words!
This will be our first time owning a bird....we already have
an Australian Shepherd dog (or should I say "HE has US" :-).
I hope all goes well when we introduce the dog to the bird.
At first we were going to call the bird Larry (as in Larry the Bird),
but finally settled on Pancho. Our dog's name is Nikoma.
Just added this file, so as soon as I learn a little more, I'm
sure I'll be asking *lots* of questions.....
till later

he is the more relaxed of the two being a domestic and is a real

NODE: DELNI::D_LANE
Hi, my name is Donna and I work in LKG (Littleton,MA). I am pretty
new to birds & this conference. Right now I am the owner of 2
cockatiels: Ava (Grey male) & Garkon (Lutino - probably female), a 5-6 week
old Nanday Conure named Bandit (just picked him up 3 days ago) & 2
Zebra Finches: Harry & Sally. Harry & Sally & eggs are going to a new
home (fellow PET_BIRDS noter) tomorrow.
Bandit is so sweet. He loves to snuggle and was hand fed. He's still
eating baby food once a day, and is cracking seed fine. I love him so
much and he seems to adore me too! Other people can hold him and
snuggle with him, so I don't know if he's "bonded" with anyone yet, but
if he does soon, I hope it's with me. My boyfriend bought him for
me/us this weekend and doesn't live with me so he can't spend as much
time with him as I do. My mom said Bandit was a hyper around her
yesterday, and as soon as he came to me he was all quiet, snuggly &
full of kisses. Is that a good sign, or does he think I'm his mommy??
I had no experience with birds at all when Ava & Garkon moved in.
Ava & Garkon were 3 years old when I adopted them in October. Garkon
is much more friendly than Ava, but still not very social. I'm hoping
that will change. I believe that they were neglected or abused,
because they are so antisocial and Ava lets out this awful squak when
anyone moves to quickly around him. He doesn't like to be touched at
all!! Neither of them are into being petted to much and both of them
don't seem to like Bandit too much. Ava & Garkon have a playpen on top
of their cage and won't let Bandit play with them. They hiss and lunge
at him. I'm hoping they don't teach him how to be anit-social, mean or
bite. I wish they would all get along. I was actually hoping that
Bandit would encourage them to come around more.
Harry, Sally & Finch eggs are going to a new home tomorrow. I'm sure
they'll be fine. I sure will miss them though. My boyfriend told me
that I had to find a new home for the Finch family in order for him to
buy Bandit for me (Blackmail in my mind). He said that I was becoming
out of control and that taking birds home with me is getting out of
hand. Of course I agreed, and he said he'd give me the time to find a
good home for them. I would have hated to seperate them. I was very
lucky to have such quick luck finding a home with someone excited to
have them! (Thank you Linda!) Boy would he be surprised if he knew
how out of control I really could be (like some of you ;^).
Thank you for this conference & this chance to introduce myself.

Thanks to Donna Lane (see 6.101) I now share my life with Harry
and Sally (Zebra) Finch. I am a long-time admirer of birds, pet
and wild, but the only indoor pet birds I have had in the past were the
Budgies I had in my youth. I loved them dearly and am excited about
the enjoyment of having birds in our home again.
Harry and Sally are beautiful and entertaining. I couldn't have asked
for a better opportunity to begin learning what I need to know to
be a good bird caretaker. My mind keeps wandering to thoughts of
aviary plans, vitalites and aviary visits. Could it be there are
more birds in our future?
Ah, well. For now I will settle for enjoying Harry and Sally while
I learn as much as I can (thanks to this notesfile) and talk with
as many bird breeders as I can. I won't move ahead too quickly
....unless, of course, someone knows where I can find the perfect
young, healthy, hand-tamed, beautiful and inexpensive Sun Conure.
Then all bets are off! :^)
Welcome home Harry and Sally ...and Thank you, Donna!

I just started reading this file today. You see, I bought a "used"
Amazon Yellow Nape over the weekend, and thought I'd get into the swing
by ingesting this file. After seeing all the replies, however, I SET
SEEN/BEFORE=01-JAN-1991 and I'll try to dig through it from there.
"Cricket" is his/her name, since that seems to be about all he can say
at this point. My neighbor found the bird in his yard a couple of
weeks ago. After checking the local newspapers for lost/found with no
results, he sold me the bird for $300, which I thought was a reasonable
price. I have no idea of the age of this bird, but he/she is very
affectionate and people-oriented. I'm seeking a vet in the area who
specializes in parrots, but to no avail at this time.
A few years ago, I had an African Grey, so I'm pretty familiar with the
handling/training/feeding/cleaning of these birds. The grey was
disposed of by my (now ex) wife when I was at work one day. The same
fate will NOT befall this baby, I can tell you. My current wife is
ENTHRALLED with this bird, and they get on fabulously.
I'm looking forward to exchanging notes/stories/etc.

one Standard Poodle - not your standard fru-fru dog, no way!
two male cockatiels - the sing "we wish you a merry christmas"
and say Good Morning, and Oh-Oh! The Cat!
and in the back yard 12 Arabian horses...but only two are mine!
We just finished building (having built) a new 12 stall barn for
the horses.
I'm looking forward to furthering my bird edcation in this file.

6.108 | new addition!! | SWAM1::PEDERSON_PA | i got caught in a gravity storm | Mon Aug 05 1991 19:43 | 31 |
| This is an update to note 6.99.......
Pancho (our peach-front conure) just got a new buddy,
a brown-throated conure named Cisco! We got him last
Tuesday.
Pancho has been weird....he doesn't like to be touched on
his back or head and will bite to draw blood if we try to
hold him. We could accept that.....he loves to ride on my
shoulders and will perch on my finger and will give little
kisses. But since we couldn't touch him, we can't groom him at
all (helping to unfurl feathers and massaging the sheaths) so
he's been looking pretty ratty. We got Cisco so that he
would have company and each would groom the other. It's worked
out well. For the last couple of days they have been sleeping
side by side on the swing and preening each other.
Cisco is soooo mellow! we can hold him, stroke his back, kiss him,
and he'll even lay on his back in the palm of my hand.
However, Pancho is now a terror around us. He will no longer take
food from my hand, bites at my neck when on my shoulder and
goes into attack pose when I open the cage. I think it's
because he's jealous.....can birds get jealous? Will he
eventually grow out of it? I read a story similar to this in
the latest Birdtalk, and the response sounded like this is the
way it's gonna be....from now on. Say it ain't so! The breeder
said she would take back Pancho, but we just can't part with
him (sucky attitude and all).

Hello everyone, I've been a read only for quite some time and thought
that it was time to sign in!. I got into bird about 2 years ago when
my inlaws gave me a tiel. Since then my collection has grown to 9
Tiels, 5 are adults and 4 are at 12 weeks, 2 parakeets and recently
sold off my 2 canaries and 3 peach_faced love birds. (was getting to
crowded indors).
I have found a way to further my collection without
crowding my house. A friend of mine asked if I wanted to raise chickens
for the eggs, I said sure, why not!. So now I got this crazy Idea, I
not only built a chicken coop, now I have a coop for another breed.
They call them ornimental birds, they are very colorful and need no
special care, (heat that is). I recently purchased a pair of Gold
Phesant and four Dark Forest Pharohs (quail type), these birds have
fantastic color.
Well, that's it for now, untill the Fairs open, then I'll be buying
more outdoor birds... (what did I get myself into!)
Tom.

6.110 | New to the Bird family! | POCUS::MURPHYM | | Thu Sep 05 1991 13:12 | 17 |
| Hi! I though it was time I introduced myself. My story started about
a year and a half ago when my fiance (then boyfriend) brought me to
Bird Jungle in Westchester to see the cockatiels. He had finches
before, and his mother had kept parakeets. I come from a strictly
CAt-olic family, so I had no experience with birds. Needless to say, I
fell completely in love with the first little sweetie that crawled up
my arm and whistled in my ear.
Now, my father has a cinnamon tiel (a gift from me, of course!), we
have two Lutino's, one white male (Dagwood) and a yellow female
(Blondie), and my little brother just told me last week, after taking a
trip to Bird Jungle with me, that he has purchased an Umbrella
Cockatoo!
The disease is definitely catching!

Time to sign in, having been read only for most of the last year.
My wife (Linda, another Deccie) and I started out with a Budgie about
a year ago. Two weeks later we thought one of our cats got it, so Lin
was dispatched to the Fish Nook for a replacement. While she was gone
the missing bird was located, giving us two. Homer and Vicky have been
together since then, and while semi-tamed, much prefer their own
company to ours!
So yesterday it was off to the Fish Nook again. This time we came
home with a Pied Cockatiel. We think it's a she, so after much
discussion and the rejection of many many names, She was named Sharra.
(Anyone familiar with Anne MacCauffrey's "Dragon Riders of Pern" series
should recognize that name.)

Hello. I've been reading this conference on and off for the last little
while and decided to introduce myself as I have found some of the
information and views of the various bird owners interesting. At this
time I share accomidations with A double yellow Amazon by the name of
Frodo, and three cockatiels;Pippin, Gimli, and Fatty Lumpkin. Two other
cockatiels I had died in the last year; Merry ( My first bird) from
flying into a door and Legolas from laying too many eggs. Both were
very painful experiences.
I also had a beautiful Medium Sulpher that was the gentlest bird you
could imagine, that I was forced to find a good home for. His name was
Bilbo. ( I here he's doing very well and is very happy. 8-)
Anyway....this seems to be a fairly informative conference....Thanks.

Hi,
I just heard about this conference. I haven't read the directory yet,
but I think that this conference will be very interesting for me.
My only problem will be, that I can spaek and write a little english,
but I don't know all the words I need to describe something. I hope
that you can understand it, if I then give you the german expression.
I'll try and do my best!
Alright, let's start. At the moment I have:
6 budgies (the smaller one's, not the standard with the big breast
and the big head), 1 of them is a half-standard.
1 Ziegensittich It belongs to the same class as the budgies, it's not
a parrot. He is twice as big as the budgies, dark
green, a light green brest and a red spot on his head.
He seems to be quite rare here, nearly nobody knows
anything about him. I'll search for the Latin name
on the Citis I have.
1 Nymphensittich He also belongs to the budgie-class, no parrot.
He is a rare one because of his colour. Normally they
are yellow, white or grey. Mine is yellow with a
touch of brown in the wings and at the brest.
He has this funny hat like a kakadoo on his head.
Also I have a dog (Saluki-Mix), a rat and some fish.
My budgies and the fish are breeding at the moment, so there is some
action at home. If somebody needs help by raising small budgies, just ask
me, I raised 3 of them and it's kind of fun. 2 of them are breeding
thereselves now.

| Hello , fellow bird lovers. I am located in Louisville , Ky in sales
@LVO. My wife and I have two birds - a Yellow Nape and a Cockatel(?).
we get hours of enjoyment from our yellow nape. We have finally found
a decent VET. Its about 5 years old, we have had it(not sexed) for
two years. we had a rough time at first. We bought the nape from a
pet store. It was sick and I had many bills total up that I took the
store to small claims court to get some of the bills paid. I am glad
to say its in good health today and loves to talk and tries to sing ,
but we haven't figured out what its trying to sing.
it says - come here , what you doing , I'm just a baby bird , hello ,
well---gotta go , byby, it calls our dogs when they are in the house
and tells them to go(our command to get the dogs out of the house. it
loves to whistle the Mayberry tune. and to yell at our other bird that
chirps loudly. The nape usually yells BOBO shut up.
The nape also says I want a good super, ask for cracker or apple and
gets upset if we dont bring it into the dinning room T-stand to eat
with us.
Its nice to see so many other bird lovers.

My Umbrella Cockatoo had been given the name Snowie when I got her 15
years ago. She is lots of fun and very cuddly.
Snow hasn't had a chance to play with other birds in a long time.
Some time ago I was a member of a Boston club. There were meetings
and outings that I could bring Snow to where she could interact with
other birds. I'd welcome an opportunity to get together with others
who have a cockatoo.

have already gotten to know many of you and your feathered friends
just from the notes. Currently, we are owned by a 1 and 1/2 year
old-loud but lovable, handfed Nandy Conure (Andy). We are now in a
search for a baby hand fed African Grey, preferably on two feedings a
day. We have only been in New Hampshire 1 1/2 years, originally from
Southern California where over the years have had a parakeet, a
Mulucan(?) Cockatoo, a Yellow Nape, a yellow collar Macaw and a Dusky

| I guess that is time that I introduce myself. I have been reading this
file for a few months now. The information in the file helped me decide
on the type of bird to buy. I am the proud owner of a three month
Eclectus male named Spock. I bought him from an East Coast Avaries
in Florida. The breeder was great and I really recomend her if you are
looking for an Eclectus.
When Spock arrived I had to hand feed him two meals a day. Spock is my
first parrot and the first bird that I had to hand feed. The first few
meals were a complet disaster, I'm still finding splattered food in far
corners of my kitchen. He is now on one feeding every other evening.
He cries just like a baby on the nights that he has to eat on his own.
I found that hot plain popcorn will help him make it through the night.
It's not that he is really hungry because on the nights that I do feed
him he really doesn't want the food he just wants to play with the
spoon, I think he just likes the idea of getting feed.

6.121 | A soon to be Bird owner... | CSAVAX::SANTINELLI | May is comming... | Tue Feb 04 1992 11:03 | 23 |

Well, since I have put in a reply to a note already, I figured I would
now introduce myself.
My name is Steve Santinelli, and I work at DDD in Nashua, NH.
I have been reading this conference for a few months now, to help me
get a feel for what I'm about to get into.
My fiance works for Dr. Phenix in Milford, NH. Since she started there
she has grown to love birds, and she wants a couple. Soon. Very soon.
Hopefully, after we get married in May, we will be able to afford to
satisfy her need for birds.
As far as my personal bird knowledge goes, I have, in the past, had two
Parrotkeets (sp?), with dogs being more of my strong point.
I also want to thank everyone in this conference for the invaluable
information this notesfile provides. I would sound like a babbling
idiot in front of my fiance, if this conference didn't exist!

I have always wanted a parrot, and finally managed it last week. My
beloved wife finally agreed, under a no smoking condition, to allow me
the honour of 'owning' one.
He is an Orange Winged Amazon about three years old. He is called
Napolean (don't know why) and upto press wolf whistles, says "hello"
and "hello napoly" (he can't quite manage napolean). When I got him last
week he wouldn't entertain being touched or anyone going near him
without either a very loud protestation, or a biting attempt. I have
put quite alot of time into him and now he will allow me to pick him
up, or rather he will climb onto me, and he will allow me to stroke his
head and neck. I must say I am delighted with his progress and not a
little surprised ( the person I bought him off said he did not like
being touched). We are now planning to introduce him to the joys of
caravanning so that he can come with us when we go off.
Cheers

My Wife and I are the proud owners of the worlds most
intelligent and talented Cockatiel...Cory. We got him November
of 1989 and have loved every minute since....well maybe not every
minute. He sings, talks a bit and cuddles with the best of them.
The most amazing thing that I learned having Cory is how much of
a personality birds have. He sure has one and when he doesn't
get his way watch out! He is so smart that the only way to keep
him from something he wants to get to is to either remove it or
remove him. While we'd love to have more birds, at this time,
Cory is enough to manage and we're happy with just him for now.

Hmmm. Just realized I never put an intro in here.
Chris Denopoulos. Work in MRO1 quality/reliability for the fault
tolerant group.
We have 4 cockatiels at home. Chester, a male lutino, was our first.
We got him from a breeder in South Caroline.
His mate, Hope, is a gray. We've been mating these two as a hobby. WE
get more lutinos than grays from them. WE have 5 lutino babies now
from them that will be ready to go soon.
We also have Elmo, a female lutino (I didn't pick the name). Elmo is
the daughter of Chester and my sister-in-laws female gray. Elmo's mate
is Barney, a male gray we bought from another noter. Barney has a real
cute personality. We will probably start mating Barney and Elmo this
fall. I'm expecting some real nice colors from them.

I have been working in this office since March.
I have 2 birds. Zebra finches named George and Eep. Eep is one of a
pair of birds I got for my birthday. The other of this pair died in
the jaws of my sweet kitty cat named Calvin. :( So off to the pet
store to get Eep a friend. In came George.
The pair sing gaily all day long. This drives my fiance crazy, but I
*love* to listen to their songs.
Since the terrible incident, I have kept the bird cage as close to the
celing as possible so that Calvin does not have either George or Eep
for lunch. All in all, I have 2 cats, 2 birds, 1 dog, and a 7 year old
boy. They keep me out of trouble.
I am looking forward to participating in this confernce.

am the proud owner of a 3 year old, tame and talking, African Grey
parrot, Colors.
Considering where we found Colors, he has come along way. This is
the second parrot that I have owned, the first being an Amazon Red.
Usually, I obtain these birds after they have been neglected. So it
takes that much more patience and affection before they become starring
members of the Walston clan.
I am looking forward to this conference, and all the information

Figured it was time I signed in. I've been reading this file for some
time and find it filled with wonderful stories and advice.
Currently we have:
inside -
7 keets
12 finches (2 zebras on eggs, 2 java rice, 2 black hooded nuns,
2 Gouldian, 2 red weavers, and 2 orange weavers)
2 cockatiels
8 love birds (2 peach faced, 2 black masked, 2 blue masked, and
2 Dutch Blue sitting on 6 eggs)
outside aviary -
3 peacocks
8 doves (4 white, 2 pied, 2 ring neck)
2 button quail
8 Silver phesants
It gets pretty noisy in the mornings, but we love it. The household
also contains 2 cats and a 5 month old Akita. Quite the zoo.

I recently became a bird-owner when I rescued a lonely looking Lutino
cockatiel (I think a male) from a Woolworths. His name is Saki and he
is totally untame. I can't handle him without gloves and when I do
have to hold him he screams so loudly that I figure my neighbors must
think I'm ripping his wings off!! But he likes to roam around my
living room in the evenings. Every so often he gets to feeling wild
and flies around whistling. And he's usually good about putting
himself to bed and recently started letting me prod him to bed when
he's climbing around the outside of his cage. That's the first time
he's allowed me to touch him!
To keep him from getting lonely, I got a young female grey, named
Sushi. I picked her out because, although she wasn't the flashiest,
she seemed the sweetest and most tameable. I was hoping she would help
Saki to become less afraid of me. She probably would be much tamer
now, if it weren't for Saki's influence, but I don't mind. I figure I
have time. With Sushi, going to bed is a game. She climbs around and
around the cage while I gently try to round her up. Eventually, she
seems to say "oh all right, if you insist." Sushi will sit on my
shoulder (when I can catch her!) and used to take a bit of appled from
my hand. Now she refuses the apple, and I suspect that is Saki's bad
influence. But hopefully over time they will both be more accepting.
I also have at least 2 Zebra Finches, Mr. and Mrs. Minnever, which are
all Steve Desilets fault! Steve advised me to give Sushi and Saki oyster
shells, so I stopped off in a Doctor's pet store to pick up the oyster
shells, which happened to be right next to the finches, who I also
picked up :-) That was just over a month ago. I say at least 2 finches
because on Sunday I thought Mrs. Minnever was sick, but it turned out
she'd laid an egg. Yesterday I got home from work and discovered she'd
laid another one. Wonder what I'll find tonight?!?
I also have 2 hamsters, Cumberbund and Sash, so my home is pretty
interesting in the evenings, what with the hamsters rolling around in
their plastic balls and the cockatiels hopping around playing with
shoelaces and the Minnever's beeping and gurgling away.

Have had various large and small birds in the past but due to a number

is almost two years old and is the most "reliable" Amazon I have seen
for gentleness. He has NEVER left a mark, let alone drawn blood. We
live in Annapolis, MD with Ollie and Bernie, a 6 month old West

| Hi,
I'm Mark Storm and I am new to this bird stuff. 'Santa' brought a
baby parakeet for my 8 yr old daughter and 4 yr old son. So far, the
kids are crazy about "Zippy". My daughter sets her alarm early so she
can get up and play with it. Zippy stays on her (or her brother's)
shoulder most of the time they are around the house.
We also have a black lab (a hunting dog). She was very confused at
first, but seems to be accepting Zippy now.

| Hello, My name is Tracy, and I am a owner of a 4 1/2 year old Blue
Crown Amazon named Coco. No, it wasn't my choice. She had had one
previous owner. Unfortunately, I bought a lot of problems along with
the good times. But most of those problems are funny ones, and I'm
looking forward to telling you all about them. I don't have children,
I have a parrot with a attitude. She beats up on dogs, and cats, and
even attacked & verbally insulted my Father! She was never taught to
fly, so she doesn't do it very well. (yes, I had her eyes checked.)
She just stinks at flying. I guess you'll have to locate me in the
notes to hear more. Bye!

| Howdy, I'm Joan and have been a bird lover since childhood, but never
extravagant birds, just budgies. Well, I wanted my kids to share in
this wonderful experience I had as a youngster, so I decided to check
out some of the small parrots. A friend has a Green Wing and an
Umbrella Cockatoo, so I thought I'd start with him. He introduced me
to the breeder he buys all his birds from, and I was totally hooked. I
have since adopted Chewey (Chewbaka), a Blue Crowned Conure, and on
January 3rd, adopted a Mulluckan Cockatoo. He/She (hasn't been sexed
yet) was born on January 1st (a new years baby), and I'm hopeful
he/she'll be home by May. I see him/her two or three times a week to
cuddle and feed, and can't wait to bring her home.
I didn't know this notesfile was here. I'm glad I found it....
Hope there's some activity here...

6.141 | I'm a newbie to this! | CSC32::SCHIMPF | | Tue Jul 02 1996 02:21 | 45 |
| Hello,
I just found this conference, after adopting a Cocktiel then buying
a Cherry Headed Conure, and a African Grey. Since I am very new to
Avian pets, I thought I better do some reading...And believe me
my eyes hurt....But what a wonderful Joy it has been.
I picked up Peatree from a person that was moving and didn't want
"to be bothered" anymore..And she is a delite! For such a young
bird, her personality is a joy...When my wife and I are at the
breakfast bar, Peatree is there; And if we are eating she must
sample whatever food is avail.; I am amazed at what she'll eat.
We are very careful as to what she can gain access to. She
does love toasted bagels w/ honey... Peatree loves to "hang out"
with our lab...Poor Majic...Wherever Majic is, there is Peatree.
She seems to have adopted the dog, when he is laying down, Peatree
is Preening him...I have seen the Trained hunting dog tolerate
this small bird preening his muzzle.
Then there is Bob (Conure), we bought him from a family who was not sure
what to do with him when they got him home...And Since Bob Aka the
SLOB, is very much a Conure they sold him..Lucky for us...Bob is our
guard bird, and general all around nut..He is about 13 months old
and has a very good vocubulary...He says Peatree ( all day long ),
says Majic, pretty boy, quacks like a duck ( I trained him ), now I
don't why I did this. and he says "come 'er" or "come here", he
does this all the time. I do believe he feels his place is on
someones shoulder...From what I have read Conures are POSSESIVE...
and Bob is...to say the least...Pet the dog or Peatree before
handling Bob and one gets a nip...
Now the Grey, well we have paid for him/her; she is just out of the
nest and still at the breeders home. It's name is Abbott..or Abigale.
Can't say much, except that "it" can really suck the food down. I
just wonder how things will work out with Bob...
Sorry for rambling...I guess it one way of saying..I LOVE THIS AVIAN
THING...
and from what I know...I do feel that being called a "bird brain"
is a compliment!
Thanks for reading
Jeff
