1.6 | How to find a conference | WMOIS::B_REINKE | if you are a dreamer, come in.. | Thu Sep 14 1989 17:02 | 34 |
| The conference that lists all the other conferences is
Turris::easynet_conferences. If you hit the seven key on your
keypad easynet_conferences will be added to your note book.
HOWEVER, do not just open the conference and write a note
asking about where another conference is. READ the basenote
which tells you how to use the conference.
Especially learn to do a directory to find if a subject has
already been entered in the conference..
in fact that is a skill that would be valuable in this conference
too (she said somewhat wryly ;-) ).
If you want to print out a list of all the conferences do the
following:
1. go to the dollar sign (dcl level, or what ever your login
level is like)
2. turn on your printer
3. type the follow words
type ANCHOR""NET$LIBRARY:EASYNOTES.LIS
4. in about 10 minutes +/- you will have a 30 page printed list
of all the conferences.
The list on Anchor is for eastern United States by the way..
there are lists on other nodes for people in other parts of
the U.S. or the world. If you are interested write to me and
I'll send you the node.

1.3 | New policy on business references | UPNRTH::BRIERLEY | Never take a live dragon lightly! | Tue Mar 06 1990 13:51 | 61 |
| There is now a new corporate policy on referrals, comments, and
business references in notes conferences, especially as it concerns the
relating of 'bad' experiences. The attached message from Ron Glover,
Corporate Personnel Policy Manager, has been posted in several
conferences. For your information I am also posting it here.
The moderators of this conference will be reviewing existing notes
to insure compliance with this new policy. We will also strictly
enforce this policy for all future postings.
The attached message follows the form feed.

Message from Ron Glover
-----------------------
Over the last several months Digital has been contacted by a number
of individuals and business entities that were angry about negative
comments made about them in our Notesfiles and Conferences. As the
Personnel Policy Manager for Digital I have been the recipient of
many of those notes. I thought I should take the time to post this
note to inform employees that it is not appropriate for them to make
negative comments or references about any person or business entity
in any of Digital's employee interest notesfile or conferences.
There are several reasons why we are establishing this rule. The
first has to do with fundamental fairness. It is simply not fair for
an employee to make a negative comment about a business when we
don't provide those businesses an opportunity to respond and defend
themselves. This is particularly true given the fact that we have no
way of determining whether the comment is honest, fair or accurate.
Clearly Digital has no intention, or desire, to open up its
notesfiles to third-party businesses so that they can engage in a
debate about whether they provide quality services. The only logical
solution then is to ask our employees to refrain from using the
Notesfiles to air grievances they have with individuals, vendors, or
organizations.
In addition to out concerns about fairness, we are concerned about
the potential damage that these kinds of comments may cause to
third-party businesses. In that regard, employees should understand
that they may be personally liable if the statements they make cause
harm to any person or business. Moreover, there is some possibility
Digital may be held liable for such comments as well. Stated more
simply, comments made in a Notesfile or conference are in no way
privileged or immune from claims of liable, slander or defamation.
We are asking all of the users of Notesfiles to exercise discretion
and judgement in the comments that they make in the system. We are
also asking moderators to go back and review the notesfiles they
moderate and to remove any notes that include derogatory references
to third-party businesses.
Please feel free to contact your moderator if you have any questions
on this subject.

1.4 | NOTERS 'IN BUSINESS'-CAUTION | CLOSET::COMPTON | Linda DTN 232-2441 ACO/E47 | Mon Jul 02 1990 18:06 | 21 |
| Please be sure to use the system resources (for example, this notes
file) in accordance with Digital policy. Simply put, if you are
selling goods or services on an ongoing basis, do not use the notes
file because of the conflict of interest policy. If you are a private
party with some article to sell on a random, one-time-only basis,
that's fine. Recurring postings for the same type of article for
sale will be checked discretely, offline, by the moderator(s) and
deleted if there is a valid concern about appropriate use of system
resources. This is not a 'big brother' approach, but rather a wish
to keep our notes file free from any jeopardy, which we would be in
if the notes file were not managed in this way. I have reams of stuff
from the MODERATORS notes file on this issue, and online copies of the
relevant Digital policies, if anyone is interested. If there is a
*lot* of interest, I will post it under a new base note, rather than
sending individuals copies of these long discussions (I just wanted to
keep from having a new base note that was umpteen screens long).
If you are not sure about whether to enter something for sale, pls.
contact me or the other moderators (names available after 7/18). If I
see something I'm not sure about, I will first 'hide' the note, pending
a discussion with the person placing the ad. /Linda

We are adding KEYWORDS to the coference to make it easier to find
your way around in.
We also have `lifted' the restriction on KEYWORD creation. When you
are creating a BASE NOTE or a REPLY, you can KEYWORD it, either with
one of the existing KEYWORDs or with a MORE descriptive KEYWORD of
you own.

A MESSAGE TO EMPLOYEE INTEREST NOTES FILE USERS
Over the last few months I have received a number of complaints
from employees, and individuals outside of the company about
material communicated in electronic mail systems and posted in
various employee interest notes files. After reading some of this
material it is clear that a reminder about appropriate comment and
behavior in these systems is necessary.
First, and most critically; the electronic mail systems and notes
files are company facilities subject to normal workplace rules of
conduct. As such, the same rules that govern conduct and comment
in any other Digital workplace apply with equal weight in these
systems. Stated simply, if you wouldn't say something in a
Digital business meeting, you shouldn't say it in electronic mail
or notes. PERIOD.
Statements that attribute improper, illegal or immoral motives or
actions to others; statements that cast aspersions on the
character or integrity of others or that amount to libel or
slander are not permitted. PERIOD. In this regard, it does not
matter whether the individuals subject to the comment are elected
public officials or directors of organizations disfavored by the
author. There is no "Public Figure" exception in these systems.
Comments of a sexual nature are not acceptable whether they are
about the author or directed at others. Similarly, comments that
degrade, devalue or discriminate against others are also
prohibited.
Neither the notes conferences nor electronic mail should be used
to solicit other employees. This prohibition covers efforts to
solicit employees for personal or political gain, to sell or
market goods or services (except authorized marketplace or
discount conferences) and efforts to solicit employees to take
action, sign petitions or support particular causes or candidates.
Finally, employees should remember that it is never appropriate to
spend working time in employee interest notes for non-work
purposes. Personal or entertainment activities in these notes
files should be limited to assigned break times, lunch time and
before or after business hours.
Employee interest notes files and conferences provide an
electronic forum to share ideas and opinions about matters of
common interest. In supporting these conferences, the company
understood that there would be occasions where employees would
disagree on issues being discussed, but we believed and continue
to believe it is possible to disagree without being disagreeable.
Personnel Policy 6.54, Proper Use of Digital Computers, Systems
and Networks provides further information about appropriate
conduct and comment in these systems. Employees who fail to meet
these expectations, or who use company computer systems in ways
that are contrary to the letter or spirit of that policy are
subject to Corrective Action and Discipline up to and including
the termination of their employment.
The moderators of these conferences, along with your system
managers, personnel representatives and the Personnel Policy
Manager are all available to answer any question you might have
about appropriate use of these systems.
Please feel free to forward this memo to other Digital notes
files and conferences.
