768.0. "Install Win 95 (or NT) over network. MOP or bootp" by CHEFS::oloras3.olo.dec.com::couplands (Simon Coupland) Fri Mar 28 1997 07:07

How do I create a Multia boot floppy so that I can connect to an NT Server
over the network and install Win95 (or Win NT) from the CD on the server.

I have RMF, that sets up bootp or MOP, but I don't know how to get it
to see shares from the NT Server.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Simon

768.1The Multi Card floppy SUTRA::MAHIEUXFri Mar 28 1997 10:4618

    Hi Simon , You should be able to connect to :

    http://Mult9.vbe.dec.com

    and click on "How to install NT over the network with no local CD"

    I built the image of a floppy which boots a mini dos and netbeui
    for ANY PC and some current net cards among which the on board DE435
    equivalent of Multia.

    Actually the emphase is on NT but it works for any O/S for X86 which
    supports Net installation or local copy then local install.

    Let me know how this worked for you.

Thierry,

Many thanks for the response.

I used your "universal boot disk" and it worked extremely well.

A fantastic job, well done.

Simon

ps Would it be difficult to include drivers for PCMCIA cards..?
I have often needed to boot laptops and install off the network.
768.3It still asks for enhancements let me knowSUTRA::MAHIEUXWed Apr 02 1997 03:507
    I am not very much aware about how PCMCIA drivers work or differ from
    std net cards but if you find in the floppy for this card a DOS driver
    section.
    All you need to get is the driver file itself a protocol.ini and
    system.ini
    If you have a look at the attached presentation it explains how to
    build and enhance such floppy.

    In the same location mult9.vbe.dec.com/ppts/ntnet.htm where you pulled the
    floppy image from there is a file whole.zip which I think contains :
    - A utility QUICKDOS.ZIP to build a DOS floppy from NT
    -    Univcli.dos floppy image
    -    Dosimage.exe
    - NTNET.PPT which is the explanation and guideline about how to
         proceed to build any new net card support on that floppy.

        NB: A contest is open to be the first to have PCMCIA working on
            laptops using such a floppy I know of at least 3 people who
            would be interested to have the floppy enabling laptops to
            perform NT installation over the net.

        to ALL: Any add-ons support to this floppy send me mail I will
                update accordingly.

    Best Regards
    Thierry
768.6It's coming but not for all PCMCIAs ...SUTRA::MAHIEUXWed Apr 09 1997 05:076
    Looks like we have a solution for Ultra II with Digital's DEPCM PCMCIA card
    over NWlink .
    Tests are currently being ran to extend this to Hinote VPs and add
    Netbeui support , we will make a floppy image available asap.
