755.0. "Part Number for Official Multia 166 Intel upgrade?" by JULIET::HARRIS_MA (Networks Sales Exec) Mon Feb 03 1997 17:16

    I have a customer that has 25 Multia (intel) and wants an
    official part number for the 166mhx upgrade if still available.
    (They just got 7 more Multia's through a closeout deal at our
    reseller).

    Does a 166 upgrade still exists for Multia?

	There never was a 166 MHZ upgrade for Intel Multia's.
There was a 133MHZ upgrade, but these are not available anymore.

755.2Would Intel 133 chip just plug in?JULIET::HARRIS_MANetworks Sales ExecTue Feb 04 1997 17:4910
    Would the customer be able to buy a STANDARD Intel Pentium 133 chip and
    just plug it in and change a jumper or two?

    If so, that would work too... They can get 133's from Intel for $150
    these days.

    Let me know. I am meeting with them on Thursday morning and would like
    to have good news for them.

This should work just fine. Talking to one of the Multia Engineering guy (who
has left the company), he said the 166 Mhz Pentium should also work as long as
you change the jumpers on the board. I don't know which jumpers to change, but
it's not difficult to find out by looking at the printset.

I could dig out the jumper setting for the the 133Mhz pentium. Let me know if
you need this settings.

	A standard 133MHZ CPU from Intel will work just fine, Just
connect or install jumper W2 near the CPU. Since we never had a
166Mhz cpu to try, I can't guarentee that it will work.

755.5Just a little more info if possible please.JULIET::HARRIS_MANetworks Sales ExecSat Feb 08 1997 00:3720
    I just got back from customer site. They are encouraged about this
    info. They were wondering however WHY the Original Digital supplied
    133mhz upgrade kit for Multia (they purchased several for about $1000
    last year before they were discountinued) ALSO included a new
    Pipeline Burst cache module. Do they need this too?

    Anyway, You'll make us one VERY HAPPY customer (Kaiser Aluminum) if you
    can tell me:

    	1. Do we need a new cache module as well for any faster pentium?

    	2. What are the jumpers changes required when using a P-133?

    	3. What are the jumpers (if at all) for using a P166mhz upgrade?

    Any additional info would be great. This customer loves DEC, and this
    kind of above-and-beyond the call, keeps them very happy and BUYING new
    "stuff" (Alpha Systems, Celebris GL 6200's, Networks, disks, etc).

755.6133Mhz CPU upgradeGWEN::KAUFMANEngineering MGR Xterminals and MultiaTue Feb 11 1997 09:3712
	You do not need the Pipeline burst cache
if you're upgrading to 133Mhz CPU. It does however
improve performance if you use it. The CPU
upgrade alone increases performance about 10%.
The cache upgrade alone increases performance
about 25%. The 2 together increases performance
about 35% to 40%. No jumpers need to be changed
when the cache is upgraded. For the 133Mhz CPU
upgrade, you must install jumper W2 near the CPU.

755.7Standard cache part number (non-Digital part #)JULIET::HARRIS_MANetworks Sales ExecTue Feb 11 1997 11:293
    OK, is there an industry standard part number for the cache module?

	I have no idea what the part number would be for
 the industry standard. All I have for info is on the
part Digital created.

    The cache module is orderable as an OEM/Spares part #54-24074-01.

    I think it's $31.00 or so..
