| Well, I've been continuing to play with the system; at least I'm
starting to understand the layering and interplay between the
Multia software and Windows NT.
After several passes/reloads/experiments, I'm to the point where I've
only got "one" problem with 'standalone user' mode; I just can't seem
to get the configuration manager to let me configure any applications.
i.e. the 'keypad' button always comes up with a grayed out menu, even
though I'm logged into an account with WNT 'admin' level privs.
Does anyone know what the config manager code is looking for that enables
this menu? Some file, some data in a file, something in the registry, ...
This is really starting to feel like a bug to me; as a standalone
user I would expect to be able to fully configure my own desktop.

| I just realized I mis-spoke in .-1
I said "Configuation Manager"; I should have said "Customize Multia";
ie the utility that gives you the picture of a monitor/kbd/system/etc.
WRT .-1, Is there _anyone_ familiar with the code or software that
knows what it takes to enable the 'Set up Multia applications' menu
in a Multia 'standalone user' environment?
Dave
PS - I finally tracked down my "ncrc810" startup problem: after
acquiring a scsi cable and hooking up a cdrom drive, and running
some diagnostics from the Symbios Logic www site, I opened the
case up to discover the scsi adapter board wasn't seated right!
Reseated it, powered up, booted, and voila! it works now.

| When you click on the Multia logo on the App. Mgr., a window should pop up with one of the entries
"Customize Applications". This is what you use to add and delete apps in the App Mgr Icon Bar when you are
running standalone.

You need to get your NOTES setup corrected. All your NOTES are over 80
columns wide and make it very hard to read your pearls of wisdom.

| re: .19
You know, I've looked at that "Customize Applications" panel
a BUNCH of times; I saw the Remove, Modify, and Copy buttons.
I never saw an "Add" button; but I just realized there IS a
"New Windows" button up at the top. duh...
Am I correct in assuming that I'll have to use this for each
account (as opposed to once for the entire system via the
"Customize Multia: Local Desktop" window)?
Also, how do I go about updating the Status and Ref Desk windows?
The Customize panels for each of those windows don't seem to have
any add/modify/delete options.
From NT's viewpoint, I am logged into an account in the NT
"Administrator" group, but this apparently doesn't satisfy the
requirements of the "Customize Multia: Local Desktop" code. It
seems that this code is looking for "something else" beyond the
NT account group to tell it to enable the Multia admin functions.
Poking around in the registry, I found HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/
DigitalEquipmentCorporation/Multia/ Terminal and Workgroup areas.
Under /Terminal/Accounts I found groups for the accounts I created
after the initial 'Standalone User' boot-up (interesting note; the
NT account utility shows other accounts NOT listed in this group.)
These Multia entries include an AccountType item with the value
"User" or "Administrator" as per what I initially created, but it
seems these entries aren't sufficient to unlock all the menus.

| Well, some more reloads and experiments later, some of my questions
are answered, while I'm even more puzzled about others...
I went through the 'first desktop' sequence, made my system a
configuration server for itself, and much to my surprise I find
that the keypad menu off the "Customize Multia: Local Desktop" is
still greyed out. However, when I go through the Config Mgr and
select a workgroup or desktop to modify, the "Customize Multia:
Workgroup xxx" or ":Desktop yyy" panel does have the menu active.
So it appears that no matter whether you are a standalone user or
fully configured, the 'Local Desktop' has this disabled.
The thing that leaves me puzzled is that now that I can get to a
Customize Multia window with this menu active, I see that what I
get when I choose any of these options is exactly the same as if
I activated the customize item on the individual windows. Now that
I understand this, I'm left with the questions posed in .-1...
How can I change the items offerred on the RefDesk and Status windows?
For example, how do I add MS Office or Visual C++ online help docs to
the Reference Desk, or other monitoring utilities to the Status set?
(Thanks to .19, I now know how to augment the App Mgr window...)

The Config Manager lets an administrators remotely configure
the Multias they manage. The administrator accesses the same
Customize Multia window as a user, but with more privileges.
In this case, you just happen to be "remotely" configuring
your own desktop. Note that an administrator could also lock
Multia application dialog boxe so a user couldn't modify them
locally.

You can't. If you want to add other help docs or utilities,
you add them to the Application Manager.

Ah, ok; those two are bounded... App Mgr it is then.

| First of all, customizing applications that appear in the
Application Manager is performed by clicking on the Multia Logo
and selecting Customize Applications. You can only select the keypad
in the customize Multia picture when you are a system manager and you
are customizing another users Multia through the Config Manager. This
is why it is greyed out.
Secondly, there is no mechanism for customizing what is inside
the Reference desk, or what status items you can get using the Status
function. The functionality that is in Status and the Reference desk
is hard coded in the system image. You would need the source code
to make changes to these items.
