3199.0. "Digital-Internal Beta Testing -- VB and VC++" by DECWET::GETSINGER (Prod Mgr -- Languages for Windows NT) Tue Mar 04 1997 15:32
Hello,
Microsoft Visual Basic V5.0 for the Alpha architecture is ready for
Digital-Internal testing! This is a tremendous milestone for the VB team, as
well as for Digital. See the first attached note for the VB kit location.
In addition, Visual C++ V5.0 for the Alpha architecture is ready for
Digital-Internal testing. The VC group, through their tireless effort, have
once again completed a port of a major version. See the second attached note
for the VC kit location.
Finally, if you're interested in Digital-Internal news about Alpha versions
of Microsoft development tools (including Office), please visit

Visual Basic V5.0 for Windows NT on Digital's Alpha Systems
-----------------------------------------------------------
***FOR DIGITAL INTERNAL USE ONLY***
The Visual Basic V5.0 kit for Alpha is available for Digital Internal
Use. This kit is made available to Digital by Microsoft under a limited
license, and Digital needs to keep track of its usage.
If you copy OR install this kit, you must register in note 2 of the
DECWET::VB-FOR-ALPHA-NT Notes conference.
Software Requirements
---------------------
To use this version of Visual Basic, your system must be running Build
#1057 (released version) of Windows NT V3.51 (Service Pack 5 is required)
or Build #1381 (released version) of Windows NT V4.0 (Service Pack 2 is
recommended).
To determine what build level of Windows NT you are using, run
winver.exe.
Use PKUNZIP to decompress the kit. If you do not have a current version,
please visit the PKWARE site (http://www.pkware.com).
Disk Space Requirements
-----------------------
The compressed kit is 139 Mb.
The uncompressed kit is 304 Mb.
Installation Information
------------------------
1. Copy VB50-3820.ZIP to a drive with 139 Mb of free space. Copy the kit
from one of the following locations:
slugbt.zso.dec.com:/pub/vb/kits/VB5.0 (anonymous FTP)
slugbt.zso.dec.com:/var/spool/ftp/pub/vb/kits/VB5.0 (TCP/IP)
slugbt::"/var/spool/ftp/pub/vb/kits/VB5.0 (DECnet)
2. Change directory to the location of the copied files.
3. The drive that will hold the uncompressed kit needs at least 304 Mb
of free space.
4. Uncompress the kit by executing the following command:
pkunzip VB50-3820.ZIP -d <PATH>
(NOTES: -d is a required option to maintain the directory structure
<PATH> is a full directory specification, such as c:\vb)
5. Optional: Delete VB50-3820.ZIP to conserve space.
6. Read README.TXT to learn about current VB V5.0 kit issues.
7. To install VB V5.0, run the setup.exe in the top level directory of
the uncompressed kit.
Visual Basic Bug Reporting

Visual C++ 5.0 for Windows NT on Digital's Alpha Systems
INTERNAL FIELD TEST
***FOR DIGITAL INTERNAL USE ONLY***
The Visual C++ V5.0 RC12 for Alpha is available for internal
testing. This is based on the the second Alpha release candidate
based upon the tenth, and final, release candidate for Intel.
Please refer to this copy as "RC" or "RC12"
to distinguish it from other kits.
This kit is also the same as the kit that will be sent to external beta
sites, with the additional fix for alignment faults in the debugger.
Information in the kit and this note are Digital Confidential, and must
not be distributed except on a need to know basis. This kit is made
available to Digital by Microsoft under a non-disclosure agreement, and
Digital needs to keep track of its usage.
If you copy OR install this kit, please make sure you have responded to
note 2 in the DECWET::VISUAL_FT notes conference with the information
requested in it. You do not need to repeat your registration in note 2
if you have already registered for a previous V5.0 internal beta.
Software Requirements
---------------------
You must have Windows NT 4.0. You must
uninstall all prior versions of VC++ and reboot before installing the
Beta Kit. The Microsoft Internet Explorer is also included for you to
install.
Installation Information
------------------------
The VC++ 5.0 Kit is on slugbt.zso.dec.com, IP address: [16.64.0.18] in
the following directory paths depending on network protocols:
slugbt.zso.dec.com:/pub/vcxx/kits/V5.0 (anonymous FTP)
slugbt.zso.dec.com:/var/spool/ftp/pub/vcxx/kits/V5.0 (TCP/IP)
slugbt::"/var/spool/ftp/pub/vcxx/kits/V5.0 (DECnet)
1. Copy all the files (unzip.exe, readme.txt, vc50kit.zip) to a
drive with adequate space (at least 600 Mbytes).
unzip.exe is a native Alpha executable that is aware of long file
names.
2. Run the following commands in the directories containing the zip
files :
unzip -d VC50.zip
Install Internet Explorer and VC++ 5.0 RC12 using the files extracted
from vc50.zip (run ie30\msie30.exe, then see environ.htm and
Vcread.htm, then run DEVSTUDIO\setup.exe).
The htm and txt files have not been edited for accuracy or Alpha-specific
information, but they may provide useful information.
3. Optional: Delete the vc50.zip and sp1.zip files to conserve space.
Visual C++ Bug Reporting
------------------------
We have created a (unrestricted) Notes conference on DECWET::VISUAL_FT.
Please register and report any Alpha problems with the Interactive
Development Environment (now known as Developer Studio), MFC, OLE,
AppWizard, ClassWizard, the debugger, the compiler and all other parts
of Visual C++ there.
General questions about Visual C++ and general Visual C++ problems
should be addressed to the Microsoft Compuserve forum or to the
DECWET::VISUAL notes conference.
