| There have been no resources to work on improving (or creating) Windows
95 printer drivers for the DECwriter dot matrix printers for quite some
time. In general, the "retail" printers have been de-emphasized.
However, we've been able to look at some of the neglected printers
recently and the DECwriter 95 is high on that list.
There are two drivers that can work with the DECwriter 95:
- The Windows 95 DECwriter 95 driver, which is included in some Windows
95 CD-ROM distributions in a separate directory (DRIVERS/PRINTERS/DEC)
or in Service Pack 1 for Windows 95.
- The Citizen GSX-240 driver that ships with Windows 95.
If you have tried both of these printer drivers and still experience a
problem, that would be information that we would need. The Windows 3.1
driver that shipped with the printer is not recommended for use on
Windows 95.

| Tim,
thanks for the quick reply. It's good to hear that things are improving.
I believe we already tried the Citizen driver, but I'll try again to be sure.
Also, I'm going to dig out the DECwriter 95 driver you mentioned and give it a
try.
I'll be back with the results next week.
Hans.

2092.14 | are these the correct drivers ? | 50008::BACHNER | Mouse not found. Click OK to continue | Fri Apr 04 1997 08:12 | 33 |
| Well - I pulled the following drivers from the Windows 95 SR2 (German)
distribution:
- DEC24PIN.DRV (supposedly used for the DECwriter 95)
- DMCOLOR.DLL (also used by the DECwriter 95)
- ESCP2MS.DRV (for the Citizen GSX-240 ?)
They all have a date of 5-Sep-96 11:11 but the exact same size (to the byte) as
on the older Windows 95 distributions - it seems they don't have changed at all.
I installed the printer as a DECwriter 95 and printed a testpage. The printout
stops after the (big) line saying "Windows 95", the Windows logo is missing the
lower part (the yellow 'subwindow' and almost all of the blue one).
The Citizen driver is even worse. It appears that the printer does not recognize
that it receives graphics data. It starts with
GU
V
followed by a flood of 'funny' characters, most of them from the upper half of
the PC character set (graphics characters like 'hearts' and 'clubs', , greek
alpha and pi signs etc. We tried the printer setup for Epson emulation and for
automatic data type detection.
Any idea whether there are better drivers available ? Tim - are the above
drivers those that you were talking about in .12 or can you give me a pointer to
the proper ones ?
If it helps I can send you the printouts by snail mail or fax.
Thanks for your help,
Hans.

| Sorry for the delay in replying. The information you've provided is
useful.
The printer drivers I mention in .12 are the only drivers. I am not
hiding any better drivers. They have not changed since the original
release of Windows 95.
The Citizen driver is supposed to work properly. I believe you have to
change the print protocol to IBM mode to use the Citizen driver. Try
also installing Service Pack 1 to get the new lpt.vxd, assuming you are
using the parallel port.
