Well, was at what's supposedly the last SCCA race at Bridgehampton, New
York over the weekend. The town council of Southampton is meeting
tomorrow night to hear arguments (pro and con) for the continuation of
the track. Also, the two rumors of the weekend that, considering the
sources, are probably more closer to fact are 1) the State of New York
has banned anymore golf courses on Long Island (one of the proposed
ideas as to what to do with the track upon closure) because of the
environmental impact of "clear cutting" trees; 2) the wannabe
developers of the track who want it closed apparently did not file
their environmental impact study on time to get the track closed until
mid-1996. No group, according to my sources, has as yet committed to
any spring 1996 event dates.
However, there is HOPE. There is also an alternative in the works. A
group of racers, one of whom is the track manager of Bridgehampton,
have gotten together and proposed a new circuit to be built about 45
minutes east of The Bridge. The facility is to be called "The Mid
Atlantic Race Complex" (aka as "Project Calverton") located in
Calverton, NY. This is 3000 acres of property formerly owned by the
Navy, leased to Grumman, and now owned by the town of Calverton. I have
alot of information on this proposed complex, including names and
addresses of where to write to get this thing off the ground (the town
WANTS this built!!!) and I'd like very much to get the readers of this
notesfile involved in the "birth" of this new facility. To that end, I
would like to ask the Moderators to assign specific note to be entitled
"Mid Atlantic Race Complex" so that I can keep folks abreast of what's
happening down there as it develops.

The town council of Southampton is meeting Yeah, I went to what was supposedly the last SCCA race at Bridgehampton, too --- except is wasn't this past weekend, it was in THE EARLY 1980's !!!!!! I guess the 8 bucks I spent on the "Save the Bridge" T-shirt helped :-) The story was the same back then - the developers want to do this and that, blah, blah, blah. Maybe this is how the owner makes his money... | |||||

I heard at our last SCCA weekend at NHIS that the golf course would
cause more pollution due to the chemicals than what the race course
puts out, and that's why we may have the Annual Last Bridgehampton
race weekends.....
