    Jim,

    For what it's worth...

I ran a number of NER Solo II events 2 years ago in a Fiat X1/9, running
on Yokohama A008SII's. The Yoko's were not competitive with Hoosier
Autocrossers at that time. I don't remember seeing R1's on cars then.
I've since been running in COM Driver's Schools and Time Trials on road
courses, and the R1's have been dominant there. I'm planning to
upgrade to R1's as well, and I'm also trying to figure out the best
size. For my car, I need whatever gearing advantage I can muster, so I
want a very low profile tire (like the 215-45's you mention). Given
how light my car is (~1950 lbs), I don't think I need the 215mm width,
and I don't have a lot of horsepower to waste on rolling resistance. I
am hoping to find a narrower tire in a 45 or 50 profile.

For autocrossing, I would think that you may not get the tire up to
operating temperature as quickly with a very wide tire, so you may also
have a case where too much width slows you down. If I were you, I'd
keep looking at what other's were using and see if they'll talk to you
about their experience with other tires and widths.

Pirelli still sells the P7 in 175/50x13. The newer type tires are probably much
stickier, but maybe they'd work.

Seems all the FAST guys in CSP in the Rocky Mountain area are running
215/45-13 BFG R1s on 7 or 8" wide 13" rims. That includes several
Miata and RX7 drivers. Their is are several BMWs (a 325is and a early
M3 .. in CSP???) running larger sizes but they have larger and heavier
    cars.

    Dave....

As far as X1/9s go I've seem only two running out and they're both in
MOD classes running Hoosier slicks. One has a Mazda Rotary... VERY
    FAST!!

I'll wait until after Nationals in the fall to order a new setup for
    next year.

After 4 SoloII events my 185/60-14 R1's are still in great shape and
should last the rest on the session with no problem... I guess folks
were right when they said the road racer R1s last longer. (note: BFG
dropped their autocrosser R1 this year and offers only the road racer
    tire)
