| I have my shortwave radio here in the office but I have to bring it outside to
get any reception - maybe I will at lunch. UK_CARS did say that the Prince of
Monaco said that if Wendlinger dies because of the crash he would cancel the
GP..... The internet news feed is about a day behind so there is no current
news on it right now.
From the initial reports on Karl, it didn't sound as bad as Ratzenberger or
Senna, but then we are only hearing what 'they' want us to hear.
I hope the news of his death is incorrect.

| I heard it too, but again, unconirmed. From the reports I did hear
about his condition, it is no surprise.

90.3 | BBC update - 1700 GMT 5-13-94 | HEARSE::Burden_d | Keep Cool with Coolidge | Fri May 13 1994 14:12 | 9 |
| Just caught the 1700 GMT BBC news from the parking lot here at ALF. They said
that Karl is in critical but stable condition - they did use the term 'massive
head injuries' I believe.
They also mentioned something about the drivers forming a safety committee and
caught something about them looking at the wings of the car (it faded out a
little bit so I didn't get the jist of it.)

On Karl Wendlinger's condition:
He is in a stable but critical condition. The swelling has come to a stop,
the next 48 hours are crucial to his survival. Should he survive the next 48
hours, they will slowly bring him out of the coma over a 20 day period.
Doctors have advised the family and friends that chances are good he may
live the rest of his days in a wheel chair because of damage to his brain.
They also said a worse case scenario is that he remains in a vegatative
state for the rest of his life. They are convinced that he must have
suffered some form of brain damage. Then again, they said the same things
about Swede Savage (massive, massive head injuries) and Roberto
Guerrero (injury similar to Wendlinger caused by a tire in the head) and both
fully recovered. In fact Guerrero shocked the doctors by suddenly waking up
nine days after the accident. Let's keep our fingers crossed that he makes a
full recovery...
On Wendlinger's Helmet:
Wendlinger's helmet had a dent in it as a result of his head hitting the
water bottles used to absorb energy. The bottles are in fact very soft and
deformable and people are now questioning the structure of the Helmet. The
impact wasn't particulary violent, yet the helmet failed the driver. The
helmet is supposed to protect the inner cushioning of the helmet which
protects the driver. Once this cushioning is used, it must be replaced every
race. The question remains why both Wendlinger's and Senna's helmets failed
them upon impact. These are the new style "lightweight" helmets and are
supposed to resist up to 3000 pounds of pressure. Drivers are discussing
this during their meeting. If they can make a carbon fibre chassis that
doesn't break they certainly can make a lightweight carbon fibre helmet.

90.6 | | BALZAC::STURT | Totally wired | Tue May 24 1994 08:28 | 12 |
| The process has begun to bring Wendlinger out of his coma. Remember
that the coma was artifically maintained to allow his injuries to heal.
It will probably take several days before he shows any signs of waking
up. At the request of the Wendlinger family, health bulletins are few
and concise.
I was surprised to read that, immediately after the accident, he was
conscious and even exchanged a few words with Eric Comas, who was the
first driver to arrive on the scene of the accident. He fell into a
coma later on. Shades of Mark Donahue.

| Karl is out of the coma now. He seems to be recovering quite well and
he is talking to his visitors. The doctors remain cautious though.

| He has also been flown, successfully, to a hospital in Innsbruck,
Austria from what I've just read in the CARS_UK file
