MIAMI (AP) -- A go-cart driver was killed Sunday when he crashed
into a concrete barrier while warming up for a race on the downtown
Miami Grand Prix course.
Tom Shaw, 35, of New York, apparently lost control coming around
turn 3 on the 1.87-mile bayside course. One witness said his rear
tire caved in. There was no fire or explosion.
It was the first death in the 12-year history of the Grand Prix
of Miami, media director Tristan Lewis said.
Shaw was preparing for a Formula 125 Shifter Kart Race, which
was canceled immediately.
The race, which had 70 entries, was not sanctioned by the Sports
Car Club of America, the sanctioning body of the Miami Grand Prix.
Shifter Karts have a top speed of 135 mph. One driver estimated
Shaw's speed at 65 mph when he went out of control. He suffered
head trauma and internal injuries.
He was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center,
where he died on the operating table, Lewis said.
