263.0. "Cosworth V8 info" by OASS::BURDEN_D (He's no fun, he fell right over) Thu Aug 08 1991 09:43

Anyone know the firing order of a Cosworth V8? I'm stringing the ignition
wires for my Wolf WR-1 kit and would like the put them in the right order.

The firing order is 1-8-3-6-4-5-2-7 the cylinder configuration,
looking at the engine from the front is the left side are #'s 1-4 and
the right are 5-8. This is from The Anatomy & Development of the F1
    Racing Car by Sal Incandela.

I was at the Walter Mitty races this past weekend at Road Atlanta and someone
had a Gulf Mirage there. It had a DFV, but stroked to 3.9 litres. The
crew chief gave me the firing order, but I failed to check the cylinder
layout. A friend (Bill Gavin) took some pictures so I should be able to add
a little more detail to my kits.

I also got to flat tow a McLaren M8 off the track!

Well hey, I'm jealous! Did you get to sit in the McLaren our were you
pulling it? Also, is your friend, Bill Gavin, the same who authored
the book, "The Jim Clark Story"? If there is any other info like the
    Cosworth ?, send me an E-mail, Michael Martin @SEO. I don't generally
cruise thru Racers, but I was bored yesterday and like to do research
like this. Were there any other neat cars at the W. Mitty races.

Bill is an ex-DECie, not the one you mentioned.

The ones I can remember:

Tui F2 (ex John Watson)
Gulf Mirage
McLaren M8
2 more McLaren Can-Ams, don't know the models
Ferrari 312P (Can-Am)
Lola F5000 (ex Al Unser Sr)
Porsche 917/10 (ex Al Holbert?)
Porsche 935 or 936 (ex Al Holbert)

Alfa Romeo Junior Z
Sunbeam hatchback of some sort (4 cyl I think)
Saab 93 (very nice condition)
2 Aston Martin DB4s

Some of the drivers I recognized were Hurley Haywood and Vic Elford.

I was working in EV (emergency vehicles - tow trucks, tilt beds, fire truck...)
so I would get to do flat tows with my van. I did not get to sit in the McLaren,
but I did get to steer a Spice/Ferrari back in last year at the IMSA event.
