110.0. "1991 IROC series" by BOOKIE::HASTIE () Mon Mar 18 1991 11:47

A string to discuss the 1991 IROC series ...

(I hope this isn't duplicated elesewhere -- please feel free to
move it if it already exists elsewhere.)

I have never been a great fan of IROC, but it has given rise to
some enjoyable competition over the years. My problem with it has
always been that I don't think it really does what it purports to
do, that is, to put drivers from different series on an equal
footing. It's a little biased towards the NASCAR roundy-rounders,
with NASCARish cars running mostly on ovals. This year they've gone
to four races, but three are on ovals, which actually puts it
even more out of balance, IMHO. I mean, why not two each ovals and
road courses?

Still, yesterday's was fun ...

Spoiler for those who haven't seen it:

If you haven't gathered yet, I'm rooting for the road racers all
the way, and seeing Dale Earnhardt spin while Scott Pruett held
off Bill Elliot for the win was (ahem) quite enjoyable! When
Elliot tried for the classic last lap pass and went in too hot,
drifting way up the banking, he had no choice but to to watch Scott
disappear ahead to the checker. It did my right-turning heart good ... :)

    I too enjoyed the race. Being biased, Rusty Wallace ran a heck of a
    good race. Starting dead last and comming to the top a couple of times
    in equally prepared cars is something else. Scott Pruett did run a
    great race and did fantastic to hold off Elliot in his own so called
    ballpark. Seeing all the passing and swapping of leaders kept the race
    interesting. Those bumper cams yesterday got a workout. Some of those
    shots were great. I'm looking forward to future races to see how
    Pruett does I believe that he will be a factor in the series.

Sorry I missed the IROC race. Reading the results though made me wonder
how they chose the drivers. I guess it's not from last years performance
otherwise Scott Pruett wouldn't be there.

I'm not complaining. I like him; even more since he beat those roundy-round
guys ;-}

Especially the one where the following car moves slowly closer
and closer until the camera goes to black and then comes back a
moment later with the following car moving slightly back ...

Love those bumper cams!
