230.0. "GP racing on the DISCOVERY channel?" by KOALA::BEMIS (no bucks, no Buck Rogers) Tue Nov 06 1990 08:32

While watching the DISCOVERY channel on cable this weekend I saw an ad
for a show, sorry - forgot the name, about classic GP races. They
showed some great, brief shots of Clark, Hill Stewart etc! The ad
indicated the show would air on Thursday evenings at 10:00 PM. When I
check my local listing there is no such show, but rather a show about
adventurers or some such thing. Can anyone out there clarify this for
    me?

    Thank you.

There is a series on Discovery with the name 'Adventure' in it but I can't
remember the full name. It is has stories about different adventures, such
as mountain climbing, kyaking, etc. What is probably happening is the the
next show will be about GP racers of the past.

230.2GP on Discovery is a One Shot DealJUPITR::JROGERSTue Nov 06 1990 15:088
    Nate,

Be sure to get the show this Thursday. It is part of the Adventure
series and only this one has GP racing. I saw the same ad last
Saturday on something called "World of Wheels"(?). That seemed like an
interesting show, I'll have to watch it again.

    Jeff,

Might that show have been "Wild about Wheels"? They ran an add for
that also this weekend. It will air again tomorrow night at 8:00(?)
    EDT.

Thanks for the info fellas. It should be a good program.

I've seen another racing show on discovery a couple a times it was
about a CAN-AM season. It think it was the season that they last raced
at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas (in the parking lot). It was really
intersting hearing the names involved Sullival, Rahal, and think even
    Galles and Little Al.
230.6Did anyone tape last night's program???ROLL::TESTONIAnnieFri Nov 09 1990 09:0711

I was supposed to tape the program last night for my
husband, who is away on business, but I screwed up the timer
on the VCR! Did anyone tape the program? Can you save my
marriage? :^) I'd be forever grateful! We have both BETA and
VHS format VCRs so I could copy and return any tape quickly.

         Thanks for any help,

                Annie
230.7One for the tape library.KOALA::BEMISno bucks, no Buck RogersFri Nov 09 1990 09:4124

    Annie,

I have the program on tape, VHS. I'm located in Nashua NH (ZKO). Send
me some mail and I'll see what we can work out.

I enjoyed the program a lot! They highlighted GP racing through the 50's
focusing in particular on the Mercedes team and to a lesser degree
Maserati. John Watson was lucky and got to drive copies of both. It
is remarkable (to me) how *fast* the cars were then. Of course, they
didn't handle any better than a boat.

Maybe the FISA ought to reduce tire width and open the cockpits of the
cars up to promote spectator interest. It was terrrific seeing drivers
sawing away at there steering wheels through the turns. (I know, bad
    safety move.)

It seems that the program may continue to air over another week or two.
At the end of last nights show they made cryptic references to the end
of an era and the introduction of rear engine Cooper-Climax. I'm
keeping my fingers crossed that this will be a short-term series.

    Annie,

I have also recorded the thing, but on Beta, so if you prefer a Beta
source (since that format performs better than VHS :-)), let me know.

I am also located in Nashua.

230.9More Early F1 ComingJUPITR::JROGERSTue Nov 13 1990 07:309
The Adventure seriew will have a show featuring the rear-engined cars
of Cooper. It appears to be the follow-up that Nate mentioned. That's
    on this Thursday at 10:00.

I would like to put my name in queue for the VHS tape. Could it be
sent interoffice to SHR1-3/O2 when available? The in-laws were
visiting last week and wanted to watch a Burt Reynolds movie. Sigh.
