211.0. "Dixie Speedway in Georgia" by FSADMN::ELDRIDGE () Fri Aug 24 1990 17:11

I just found out about this notes file and hope to be a regular user.

Bob Eldridge's name and dirt track racing is the game. I am about 5
minutes away from the famous Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, Ga. A little
trivia Bill Elliot won his first stock car race at the Dixie Speedway.
Also Kenney Roger's movie "Six Pack" was filmed at Dixie.

Dixie runs about 12 races a night on Saturday evenings. 3 to 4 Bomber
heats, hobby class, A cadet and B cadet with heat races, modifies and
spectator racers. Spectator races is where the fans can go on the
track two at a time and give it a go. Had a spectator flip three times
just a couple of weeks ago. Haven't seen and Digital wagons out their
    yet.

For those that visit Atlanta, Dixie is about 20 minutes from the
Digital Campus. We have about 5 tracks within easy driving distance to
    the Campus.

We also have a large drag racing track and the Atlanta National
Speedway. This is a big racing town. Infact if you drive in Atlanta
you will find most of the cars going about 70 to 75 on I285 that
circles Atlanta. No checker flags but a few smokies trying to keep law
    & order.

The Telephone Support Center has about 5 or 6 regulars going to the
track almost every Saturday night. Racing runs into November and
    starts back up in March.

    Lots of fun, take care.

A new racing buddy from the South.

    Regards

    Bob

211.1we must be neighbors!OASS::BURDEN_DNo! Your *other* right!Fri Aug 24 1990 17:4312
I live about 10 minutes from Dixie, but have not gone there yet. I used to
go to some of the oval track events up north before we moved here in
January. My next door neighbor goes once in a while to watch and one of
these times I'll go with him.

You say the spectator races are only two at a time? I wonder if my PRO Rally
Rabbit would stand a chance....:-)

What's the usual admission price? Do kids under a certain age get in for
free (like under 2)? What time do the races start and end?

Bob, Bob, Bob [or to use your "Southern Name" - RobertBob]

I tried to teach you a little class all the time I was in Atlanta, but
    guess I failed!

In your list of tracks, you never mentioned the only real one - that
turns left and right - Road Atlanta.

Dave, please take him up there and show him the REAL racing - down into
the dip and then under the bridge!

211.3Hot time at DixieFSADMN::ELDRIDGEMon Aug 27 1990 10:3017
I am glad to meet you. Dixie lets kids in free under 12. The normal
ticket is about 8 dollars. You can go in the pits for 2 dollars more.
It changes depending on the event.

I think your car would do just fine. We had a spider whip everybody one
night. Driving skills plays a big part in winning. The Good Ol'd Boys
like to bang them up once in a while. Not a good thing to do when it
    is your only transportation.

    Regards

211.4Hams race too!FSADMN::ELDRIDGEMon Aug 27 1990 14:5820
    Hi Barry,

I haven't heard from or about you is some time. Another Ham that likes
    racing.

Dixie has quite a few drivers that turn both right and left. That's
what makes it so much fun. Sometimes it is hard to watch everything
at once. Race, wrecks, or the fights. Not much in the fights lately.
Last one I saw was a driver chasing another with a steering wheel. The
    cops confiscated the steering wheel.

Road Atlanta, lets see, isn't that the place where a bunch of RC folks
get together and run little cars around a obstacle course? Hi Hi

    Regards

Good point Lynn. As a matter of fact we listen to the pits at Dixie on
151.625 Lots of good listening. If the fans only knew what the
officials were saying some times. Like, double up quick before that
rain cloud gets here and I have to give out rain checks. Ug.

We also get the late breaking news on protest info. Like protesting
left bank on the engine. Or is that the right bank. Plus crash updates.

One of my ham buddies has a two meter hand held that he can dial in the
track freq. Ear phones are a must.

    Regards

    Bob (N4IDM)

211.7Antique races and car show this weekend!OASS::BURDEN_DHe's no fun, he fell right overTue Nov 19 1991 17:1812
The Cherokee Shriners are sponsoring antique races and a car show at
Dixie Speedway this weekend, Nov 23/24. Thye'll have a bunch of old
midget racers and stuff like that and also over 20 classes of cars
for the car show, from street rods to antiques and regular muscle cars.

Gates open at 8 am on Saturday and noon on Sunday with racing at 1pm
each day. Admission is $5 for adults and kids under 12 are free.

If the weather looks good I'll bring the '24 Studebaker over and
enter it in the car show.

Don't know where to put this so I'll roost it in the Georgia note.

Anyone out there have any input on Roebling Road Raceway in Savannagh ?

I'm heading down there next weekend for a 6 hour endurance event and
    any info would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

211.9Dixie updateAIMTEC::16.85.112.243::Burden_dA bear in his natural habitatMon Apr 17 1995 12:1522
Saturday night went to Dixie for the first time. Gates open at 5:00pm but
racing doesn't start until 7:30pm. We arrived around 6:30-6:45pm and there
was plenty of parking up close and seats available.

Admission was $10/adult with kids 11 and under for free.

Lawn chairs are allowed on the top row, but you can bring the short leg
chairs and use them on the lower rows. The main grandstands are concrete
'steps' so some sort of padding is a good idea.

You can bring your own food and drink as long as you don't bring alcohol or
glass. (I don't believe any alcohol is served at the track either)

We saw 3 bomber races and the late model modifieds qualifying session. The
pole for the modifieds was won with a 16.42 second lap. Most where in the
16.5-17.5 second range.

We left around 10:00pm when the kids started to get tired.

Looks like we'll be going back soon, it was a good time.
