| Loreen,
Congratulations! I first think of a boy when I hear "Sam" and like the
simplicity of it (vs. Samuel) - especially with such a long last name. I would
avoid Matthew if you really dislike Matt because it will inevitably happen, but
it does sound good with your last name.
Here's what I like of your choices (I thought Alexander and Gregory were a bit
too long with Kobilarcsik - just my opinion):
Sam Vincent
Kyle Matthew
Kyle Vincent
Sam Alan
Matthew Sam
A few other ideas
Kent Matthew
Gary Vincent
Jay Gregory
Adam Vincent
Reed Vincent
Best of luck deciding - by the way, when are you due?

Well, my name's Sam and I get alot of people on the phone saying "Oh, I
thought you'd be a man!".
Obviously I think of girls when I first hear Sam, as it's my name
(short for Samantha) and also the name of a close friend of mine (also
short for Samantha). But it seems that most people automatically think
of a boy.
Just out of interest, I thought of Matthew if we have a boy. But my
husband, although he really likes Matt, doesn't like Matthew!

I also love the name Samantha, and would be considering it if this were
a girl!
Cori - I'm 19 wks right now, due Sept. 17.
I really like Sam Vincent, Kyle Vincent, and Matthew Sam so far.
If this were a girl, I'd have no problem, I've that name picked for
years....so of course, I'll probably have all boys!
I'd still like to know if anyone associates Sam with a certain
nationality. I know I tend to but just because of the Italian
nieghborhood I grew up in. Most people tell me they don't think of it
as an Italian name. I'm 1/2 Italian, 1/2 Irish, husband is Czeck.
Our child could look like any of these! I'm a definite mixture, blond
hair, brown eyes. I was wondering if this child gets my grandfather's
red hair and blue eyes (my husband is fair with blue eyes and I carry
the gene from mom), would Sam still fit?
Thanks again.

868.4 | meaning/derivation of Sam(antha) | AMCUCS::MEHRING | | Tue Apr 27 1993 15:03 | 18 |
| Hey - that's my wedding anniversary (a great date)! So you've still got plenty
of time to decide (although time isn't always a blessing in this task)...
Well, my name book says Samantha means "Listener" and is of Arabic derivation
and Samuel means "Asked of God", of Hebrew origin. I do think Samuel sounds
"biblical" to me, but just Sam doesn't have the same connotation. Unlike
Salvatore, which to me would look odd on a blue-eyed red-head, I think Sam
would fit just about any combination! However, this is most likely because I've
never been close to (nor had any enemies with) anyone named Sam, so my opinion
has not been swayed by experience - how rare! I would put it on my own running
list for my second, except I don't like the ending "m" with my last name - oh
well...
I think Michael J. Fox named his son Sam too - and I'll bet he isn't Italian
(a bit of trivia)...
Good luck,
-Cori

| I thought I'd add a reply to this! My son's name is Matthew -
we always call him that, and so far no one has shortened it to
Matt! (He's 2 1/2) Usually friends and relatives will pay
attention to what YOU are calling your child and will follow
suit. (Although there has been one acquaintance who insisted
on calling him Mattie!!! YUK! That REALLY bugs me!!!) I'm sure
someone will eventually call him Matt, and fortunately we like
that name too!! Have you decided on anything yet? Lila
