        Hi!

        We're expecting  our  first  child in January and are having more
        trouble choosing names than I would have ever thought possible!!

        I am an American married to a German,  living  in  Bavaria.   Our
        child will have dual citizenship and will be raised  bilingually.
        Therefore,  we  are  looking  for  a  name  that  works  in  both
        languages.    That, along with the fact that we have a  difficult
        last name, makes the pickings thin!  I'm hoping that some of  you
        can  come  up with some suggestions as I've been racking my brain
        and reading babyname books (both English and German) to no avail.

        In order for the name to "work" in both languages, here are a few
        rules (examples of what doesn't work in parenthesis):
        - the name may not begin with J (Jason, Jessica)
        - the name may not contain a TH (Nathan) or Y (Tyler, Ryan)
        - a boy's name shouldn't have an A in the 1st syllable unless the
          name begins with A (Brandon)

        In addition, we are more fond  of  names that are unusual but not
        too exotic.  For girls, we like names ending in A. 

        My name is Linda Maria and my  husband's  name is Ralf.  Our last
        name is Luxenhofer, pronounced LOOKS-en-hoe-fair.

        To give  you  an  idea  of what we like, here are some names that
        we're considering:

              Alexa Sofia Luxenhofer (too much alliteration?)
              Vanessa Sofia Luxenhofer (too common?)
              Devon Christian Luxenhofer (does Devon go with Luxenhofer?)

        The middle name Sofia is definite for  a  girl  (a  tribute to my
        grandmother).  

        Any suggestions out there?  They're greatly appreciated!!

	Although you selected lovely names for girls, in my opinion your last name calls for simpler first names that will flow nicely into the last name. "AleXa LuXen..." might be a little heavy on the X's; Vanessa (although a bit long) is very pretty and Devon sounds really nice. If I were picking a first name to go with Sofia; however, I would probably stay away from an "a" ending, but that's only my personal preference. I have a few suggestions, some of which may have to be altered somewhat (maybe with the use of alternative spellings or whatever) to accommodate your bilingual preferences. Girls: Amy Sofia (could use alternate spelling without a "y") Anne (or Anna) Sofia Kristie (or Kristen) Sofia Audrey sounds nice, but again, the "y" would have to be changed. (maybe Audra?) Arden Sofia Boys Brent Bryan or Brian Travis Eric Derek Aaron I know there's lots more possibilities, those are just the first few that came to mind. If I think of any more, I'll include them in another note.

	Linda, Here are a few more possibilities (tough "recipe" to follow, especially the one about no "a" in the first syllable for boys!! I thought Marc and Paul were good, but oh well...) Girls: Ren�e Sofia Aim�e Sofia Tara, Kara, or Christa Sofia Renatta or Renate Sofia Brigitte Sofia Tamara Sofia Karla Sofia Greta Sofia Erica Sofia I think the shorter ones are best with your long last name... 	Thanks for the suggestions so far. Unfortunately, we're still so undecided. For example, I really like the names Brent and Travis, but they just don't work in German. (In fact, Brent means burning in German! Yuck!) I also like the name Derek, but my husband has nixed that one. Names like Michael, Robert, Thomas, Kurt, Richard and Peter are too common for our taste and we've already got a Maximilian in the family. We do like the name Tara, but it's so similar to Sara. So we're still thinking about Vanessa Sofia and Devon Christian. Any more suggestions? Many thanks, Linda

	Hi all! Better late than never, right? I've been off on maternity leave and have come back part-time to help close KBO down. Well, Cori had the anwers in her mail, although I didn't realize it at the time. We finally decided on the name a few weeks before the arrival of: Mark Alan Luxenhofer born January 20, 1993, at 2:08 PM CET weighing in at 3080 grams and measuring 50 cm. He's almost 11 months old and a wonderfully calm and happy baby! Thanks to all and all the best! Linda
