814.0. "Little Lighton on the Way!" by PRMS00::TLIGHTON (Redskins - 1991 NFL Champions) Wed Jul 29 1992 16:42

Well, I guess I'd better include my own note. We are expecting our
first child in early March - we had the first Doctor's appointment yesterday.
Practice indeed pays off in the long run :*)! Here are some of the specifics
for you to consider:

My wife's name is Sharon Vaughn Lighton, mine is Thomas Edward. We
don't want any Juniors running around though. My Dad's name is Edward William
and her Dad's name was William James, so we've pretty well decided to use
William as the middle name for a boy.

Some of the names we've come up with at this early stage (right now,
I'd say my wife has a new favorite about once a week) in alphabetical order so
as not to put any preferences in the order.

Boys:

	Alexander William
	Andrew William
	Anthony William
	Brady William
	Joshua William
	Timothy William

Girls:

	Chelsea Rae
	Felicia Nicole
	Heather Elizabeth
	Holly Ann
	Nicole Elizabeth
	Shelby Marie

My wife came up with Shelby today. I'm not even sure it's a girl's
name, but she seems to like it - I kinda do to. More to the point, we both
seem to agree that all of these are in the running (for now anyway) and we'd
love to hear your opinions on these names and any other suggestions that we
haven't included. As far as the girl's middle names go, we've just kind of
taken the first one that popped into our heads that seemed to flow with the
first name. Feel free to experiment away, we've got pleanty of time!

		Thanx in advance...

814.1Timothy/Brady or Shelby/HeatherAMCUCS::MEHRINGWed Jul 29 1992 20:1823
Tom,

First, congratulations! Of the names you've listed, my favorites are:

Timothy or Brady (none of the others sound bad though!)

and

Shelby Marie or Heather Marie (the initials HEL are a bit risky...)

I really like Holly, too, but Holly Lighton doesn't flow as well due
to the L's... unless you always call her Holly-Ann.

Yes, Shelby is a girl's name (or can be) - the character Julia Roberts
played in the movie "Steel Magnolias" was named that, and I've also
seen it used in a few books. I like it, but it does now have a Southern
connotation for me ever since that movie...

What is your heritage? I think it's important to consider when playing the
name game.

Good choices! (yes, your favorites will come and go from now til March!)

    Tom,
Congratulations to you and your wife.

My nephew is named Alexander William, and it suits him very well.
But I think Alexander and Andrew are both being used a lot recently.
Therefore, of the names you listed, my favorites would be Anthony
William and Brady William for a boy.

I really like Shelby for a girl. Shelby Marie is pretty and so is
Shelby Rae and Shelby Heather. While Nicole is pretty, I don't think
it flows well with your last name - the "L" sound at the end makes it
hard to say with Lighton - almost comes out as a stutter.

Best of luck to you playing the name game.

I also know a male Shelby, so I guess it can be used for either.

814.4Great Input!PRMS00::TLIGHTONRedskins - 1991 NFL ChampionsThu Jul 30 1992 16:2824
RE: .1

Well, since we live in VA, I'm not too worried about any "Suth'rn
flav'r". I looked in the baby names books my wife has last night and it was
only listed in the boys names, but I also thought about a country singer
(woman) named Shelby.

I was pretty much thinking the same things about both Nicole and Holly.
We don't mind nicknames though so Nicole would probably be Nicki. I hadn't
thought about the initials with H E - good point. My friend did point out that
if we decided on Nicole, on forms she'd be N. Lighton - an interesting pun.
She suggested Thunder N. Lighton since most of my friends when little called my
parents Mr. and Mrs. Lightning. Don't worry - that was quickly ruled out.

My biggest concern with Shelby is the number of S's in our family.
Along with my wife, Sharon, we have dogs Shadow and Sierra. I'd really go nuts
trying to add another one and still figure out which one I was trying to call!
But, I've survived three...why not a fourth...btw, both dogs are females as
well, so I'd be out numbered in more ways than one.

Thanx for the input so far - its a big help for a big decision! Please
keep 'em coming y'all!

    Good luck and congratulations!!!!

I really like the name Alexander. Why not try Alexandria for your
daughter?? Shelby is nice. I like that one the best of your choices s
    far.

Is there any pattern your are going for or trying to stay away from?
Are you interested in popular names or different names, or what??

I kind of vetoed Alexandria since we live right near Alexandria, VA. I
had thought of Alexa or Alexandra, but my wife doesn't care for the nickname
Alex for a girl. I'm having a hard time trying to determine how traditional or
untraditional we're looking for. I guess that depends a bit on your
perspective. I'd say we're probably a bit more on the traditional side with
the boys names, but I don't think we have anything too far out on either list.
My wife came up with Nathan this weekend, but I'm afraid there are a few to
many Ns in there, especially with the last name.

Thanx for the ideas...please feel free to suggest some of your own!

814.8Not Too Unusual?GUCCI::SCHLICKENMAIWed Aug 19 1992 10:3320
    Tom -

How about William Vaughn Lighton? Then you could use some of your
father's name and some of your wife's maiden name [hence her father
    too].

Little girls' names are harder. I have two boys, Alexander Jordan and
Noah Thomas but no girls. I do like biblical names though... like:

    Rachel Lighton
    Rebekah Lighton

One unusual girl's name that I like is Kendra. I haven't thought of a
middle name that goes though... Kendra ______ Lighton? Maybe a little
    too unusual!

    Hope this helps,

    Kathy

Kendra made me think of the name Sandra. You had mentioned all
the S's in your family already. How do you like this one?

814.10Making some progress...PRMS00::TLIGHTONRedskins - 1991 NFL ChampionsWed Oct 21 1992 16:4831
	Just thought I'd update you...

All continues to proceed well. We had the sonogram about two weeks ago
and it was a wonderful experience. Guess we can rule out twins :*)! They
offered to see if it was a boy or girl, but we decided to wait until the big
day to find out. The baby gave us a "thumbs up" in the sonogram...all you
could see at one point was an arm with a fist and a raised thumb...so I'll take
that to mean that all is well with him / her.

We've narrowed down the choices and seem to be coming back to some of
the same names we've been considering over the last several months...

	For boys:
		Anthony William (Tony) my favorite
Andrew William (Andy or Drew)	Sharon's favorite

	For girls:
		Heather my favorite
		Shelby Sharon's favorite

We're leaning towards Marie as the middle name, but may use Elizabeth
for Shelby. As was suggested, we decided to avoid the initials HEL...of
course, SEL would be a good one for a Digit these days...

I think we'll end up with Anthony or Shelby. I'm pretty set on Anthony
and Sharon is pretty set on Shelby. We're both waivering a bit on our other
choice. If you have any other suggestions, please feel free to speak up.
Anything you can provide would be a great help to us as we get deeper into the
craziness of planning for the baby's arrival.

814.11My choice!SUBDLS::LUND"Scoop"Fri Jan 22 1993 16:4712
I met a guy once named Shelby. I really like that name for a boy or girl.

My choices:

I LOVE the name Felicia and am planning on naming my child that (If I have a
girl!) so my favorite is Felicia Nicole. I also like Felicia Christine.

For boys I like Alexander William (sounds very strong!).

Best of luck with everything and let us know!

814.12Still working on it...PRMS00::TLIGHTONRedskins - 1991 NFL ChampionsWed Jan 27 1993 10:2715
Thanx for the input...we're getting closer all the time...I'm sure
we'll have the baby at home before we know it...she's due March 5th and all is
progressing on schedule at last report...

Right now the current favorites are Anthony William and Shelby ???. We
just aren't sold on any middle names yet. Current options are Marie and
Elizabeth. I'd welcome ANY suggestions for a middle name to go with Shelby...

			Shelby ... Lighton

Of course, we're still thinking of the other choices I've listed as
well as considering others, but we've been pretty well sold on these for awhile
now. Please keep the suggestions coming...I'll keep you posted...

    Hi,
I was rereading this string and found that a few notes back Shelby
was your wife's choice and Heather was yours. Since Shelby is still
a front runner for a first name, how about Shelby Heather?

Other choices for a middle name:
    Shelby Jane Lighton
    Shelby Amanda Lighton
    Shelby Christa Lighton
    Shelby Rebecca Lighton
    Shelby Victoria Lighton

814.15Girl's name set, but Boy's is up in the air - Yet Again...PRMS00::TLIGHTONExpectant Father - Handle With CareTue Feb 02 1993 14:5524
Well, Sharon came up with a middle name for Shelby that we both loved...
I actually think we're set on the girl's name at this point:

			Shelby Rene Lighton

Now the tough one...We had pretty well decided on Anthony William for
the boy's name until we got back to discussing girl's middle names. Now we're
about back to square one. Anthony has basically dropped out of the running.
We will be using William as the middle name. I tried to talk Sharon into using
it as a first name, but I ended up agreeing that Bill or Will would be WAY too
many L's with Lighton as the last name.

We're currently looking at all names with Andrew and Timothy as the top
two. Others we're considering so far include Christian and Colby. From all the
notes I've read, it seems everyone who has trouble with a boy's or girl's name
figures that's what they'll end up with. Those who've expressed an opinion on
the matter are running 2:1 boy:girl, so I guess we're right on track with about
4 weeks to go before the due date. I suggested we could at least narrow it down
to a couple of choices and then decide based on the child, but the suggestion
barely got out of my mouth before it got vetoed. Sharon is set on deciding on
the boy's name ASAP so we're all set when the big day arrives. Any help from
the experts here will be appreciated.

814.16Andrew or Jeffrey or ScottAMCUCS::MEHRINGTue Feb 02 1993 16:5522
Tom,

Okay, you asked, so here goes with a few more suggestions (by the way, I
think I like Timothy and Andrew equally so would probably go with Andrew
just to avoid the Tim/Tom similarity):

	Jeffrey William Lighton
	Victor William Lighton
	Dennis William Lighton
	Scott William Lighton
	Gregory William Lighton
	Stuart William Lighton
	Clifford William Lighton
	Keith William Lighton

Regarding Christian - I personally don't like the rhyming factor of the
endings, and Colby - I just can't get past the cheese image, I'm afraid!
(although the similar Cody sounds okay).

Best of luck as the big day approaches!

    Hi,

I have known only a few guys named Christian in my life, and they
have all been nice people. But I don't think Christian Lighton
    sounds very good together.

A close name is Christopher Lighton. That sounds fine, to me, and
the nickname will still be Chris. Christopher would match to Andrew
and Timothy, too. Christopher Andrew Lighton
                       Christopher Timothy Lighton
In fact, your first name could be used in this combination as well:
    		       Christopher Thomas Lighton

    Chris

Howdy All...

Again, thanx for all the help so far...We think we've got a list of
finalists for the Boy's name...

			Daniel William
			Nicholas William
			Timothy William

Any opinions from the experts? Sharon is dead set to have this decided
before too much longer. I haven't had any luck with, "If it is a boy, we can
see what fits him best..." line. I'd say she's leaning towards Daniel and I
haven't got any opinion as yet, though I guess in a pinch I'd lean towards
Timothy. Thanx in advance...

    Hi Tom,

Daniel William Lighton sounds like a lot of L's to me.

I would go with Nicholas William of the names listed. Timothy is
also nice. But then you would have a Tim and a Tom. Don't know how
    that would be.

    Just my opinion of course,

814.20Tyler William's ArrivalPRMS00::TLIGHTONExpectant Father - Handle With CareTue Mar 09 1993 00:4418
I came home one night and my wife caught me off guard with her
statement...nah...not, "It's time"...she wasn't very happy with any of the boys
names and wanted to scrap the list and start from scratch. She'd even picked
up a couple of new name books for us to go through. Well, in a couple of
evenings, we'd finally picked out a name which was some what of a compromise
between us. We decided on Tyler William Lighton.

Just a few days later, Sharon ruined our dinner plans with some "pains,
but don't worry...not labor". Well, she was not quite acurate with that last
part...less than 6 hours later, at 11:42 PM on Feb. 27th, Tyler entered the
world weighing 7 lbs 15 ozs and 22 inches long.

Mom and Tyler are doing wonderfully. My thanx to all for your
assistance. Bouncing names around with you helped us find exactly what we were
looking for in a name. Looking at Tyler, its funny, but we ended up with the
right name. I don't think the others would have have fit him.
