| Of your list, my favorite choice is Mitchell...but that is DEFINITELY
too confusing with Michelle (as a matter of fact, my best friend is
named Michelle, and people call her Mitch.)
How about Russell?
I love the name Kimberly for a girl...Kim for short.

797.2 | a couple ideas... | AMCUCS::MEHRING | | Mon Jun 08 1992 14:52 | 18 |
| Kyra,
Of the names you listed, I like Reece and Martin, but think that
Conor is a bit too incongruent with Hilgenberg and agree that
Mitchell is quite similar to Michelle (although I LOVE this name!).
I really think 2 syllables sounds better with Gates as the middle
name, but I agree this isn't too big a deal since middle names
don't get used too much... just an opinion.
What came to mind instantly when I read your note were these:
Darren Gates Hilgenberg
Derek Gates Hilgenberg
Nathan Gates Hilgenberg
Good luck,
-Cori

797.3 | RE: Derek | INDICT::HILGENBERG | | Tue Jun 09 1992 11:08 | 11 |
| Hmm..
My husband has mentioned the name Derek several times now but I keep ignoring
it. It reminds me of a big buy with blond hair and muscles -- like a
body-builder. I don't know why. I've never known anyone by that name.
Maybe I'll reconsider it.
Thanks for the suggestions.

| Its funny...the only Derek I'd ever knows was a big kid with blonde
hair and muscles!
But, I like the name anyway.

797.5 | Well, how about these? | AMCUCS::MEHRING | | Tue Jun 09 1992 13:32 | 19 |
| Well, it's not like I suggested "Duke" or "Jake" (which to me try
pretty hard to be "macho")... Besides, what's wrong with blonde
hair and muscles, anyway?????????? (Spoken by the mother of a
muscular, blonde, 11 1/2-month-old -- Collin!)
How about:
Reed (close to Reece)
Wesley
Warren
Davis
Dean
Eric
Sven (just kidding!)
p.s. the only Derek I knew was dark, intelligent and witty (neither
muscular nor blonde!) And, until recent years, would you have
associated the name "Arnold" with this description? If you're lucky,
the person will make the name, rather than vice versa...

797.6 | more on associations | INDICT::HILGENBERG | | Thu Jun 11 1992 11:10 | 21 |
| Associations, whether real or imagined, probably account for 95% of why my
husband and myself would reject a certain name for our child.
For example, I won't use:
Robert (because it's my husband's name and we personally don't want that
confusion)
Terrence (even though I love this name, it's my brother's name already)
Meryl (feels like I'm naming her after the actor Meryl Streep)
Casper (the famous ghost)
Dennis (my old boyfriend's name)
Daris (his old girlfriend's name)
etc.
That's just the way we are. I'm not saying Derek is a bad name. It just
has that afore-mentioned connotation for me for some strange reason.
Thanks again for the suggestions. I had thought of Wesley or Wes for short.
Wes Hilgenberg sounds good.

Oh well, I thought Derek was a great suggestion!
I also really like:
Matthew Gates Hilgenberg (if you want an "M" name to go with Michelle)
Eric Gates Hilgenberg
Steven Gates Hilgenberg
I kind of think that a "simple" first name complements Hilgenberg
nicely.

| A few more suggestions:
Garrick Gates Hilgenberg (does two G's bother you)
Garrett Gates Hilgenberg (another two G's)
Mason Gates Hilgenberg
Nevin Gates Hilgenberg (nephew)
Jeremy Gates Hilgenberg (another nephew)
Wade Gates Hilgenberg
So what do you think of these names? I do like Reece out of the other
choices. I also liked Connor but agree that it might not go with the
last name. Mitchell, would be confusing with Michelle. I didn't like
Martin because what if someone shortens it to Marty. I think Martin
sounds very old, like names: George, Norman, etc.
Good luck!

797.9 | on names and their personal connotations... | AMCUCS::MEHRING | | Thu Jun 11 1992 18:41 | 12 |
| RE .6 -- I couldn't agree with you more (re: associations)! I was really
just joking around in .5, but sometimes it's hard to tell in notes...
so no need to be defensive.
The one I always remember is my husband vetoing my boys name "Nathan"
because it reminded him of some hot-dog chain in New York. I thought
he was crazy, but I'm sure there were other names I rejected because of
similarly "silly" reasons.
Some good suggestions coming up here, so you gotta love that!

797.11 | Wesley Gates | SELL3::FAHEL | Amalthea Celebras/Silver Unicorn | Fri Jun 12 1992 13:35 | 10 |
| Speaking of associations...
The name "Wesley" reminds me of Wesley Crusher, on "Star Trek: The Next
Generation", which is funny...
because the woman playing his mother is named GATES McFadden! :^)
But, I still like the name.

spelling is Kimberly.

As well as associations, I can't help thinking of what horrible
nicknames a child's name might give way to. When I read .5, which
suggested Reed, the first thing I thought of was "Reed the Weed".
Don't know why - but kids can be pretty cruel sometimes!!
