796.0. "Emma" by SWAM1::THOMPSOND_SH () Thu May 21 1992 20:23

    Hi,

    For the past few years I've been in love with the name Emma for some
    reason. I tend towards simple names; but my husband finds Emma to be a
    Granny-name.

    What do you think of when you hear the name Emma? Is this a derivative
    of Emily? I appreciate any ideas! Thanks.

    Wasn't one of the little girls on "Kate and Allie" named Emma? THAT'S
    what I think of! (and both of the girls on that show were cute.)

796.2Emma is short for EmilyWR2FOR::BELINSKY_MATue May 26 1992 15:486
    A friend's daughter is named Emily, and is often called Emma as a
    nickname. Personally I love the name Emma, and don't think it's any
    older sounding than Emily.

796.4ANOTHER VOTE FOR EMMAESOA12::WOODARDMon Jun 01 1992 16:2813
    Hi -

    My grandmother's name is Emma, but I personally have always loved the
    name and Emmy for short. My husband on the other hand can't stand the
    name Emma because my grandmother can be such a little snot at times.

    I also think of Emma Samms (General Hospital), that's actually when I
    started to like the name. Emily is becoming too popular right now,
    where as Emma isn't.

    I vote for Emma....not that my vote counts.

796.5It grows on you...HYSTER::TENBROECKWed Jun 03 1992 15:2310

    I'm due in August and have had the name Emily picked out for almost a
    year....but it's definitely becoming very popular.

    My mom suggested Emma as an alternative. At first I didn't like it but
    the more I think of it, the more it grows on me.

    I just hope that Emma isn't going to get popular too!!

    I was just off phone with a friend. She is due in 2 weeks. If
    it is a girl, they will name her Emily with Emma as nickname.
    I guess it is becoming popular.

Emma is the main character in Jane Austen's book _Emma_.

That's what I think of.

    I love the names Emily and Emma. In the future when I have a little
    girl I will name her Emelie.

    I think I first fell in love with the name was while reading Jane
    Austen's _Emma_. What a great love story. Also wasn't the main
    character in the book _A Woman of Substance_ also named Emma?

    What about the actress Emma Thompson? (just won an Oscar for
    "Howard's End") - I'm a big fan of both her and her husband.

    as an aside: Emma, Emily (Emilie) also Emelia (Amelia)......

    I have cousins who's names are much like this:
    Ella, Elli, Else (pronouced Elsa) and Emma as well....
