721.0. "Tranel Tranel " by VOGON::LAVINE () Wed Aug 14 1991 08:12

I hav'nt had time to read all the past notes, so I don't know if my two nephews
names on my husbands side have been entered. I somehow doubt it, as I'm sure
they were grasped out of thin air!

The three year old is Tranel (a bit like Chanel but with a Tr),
the two year old is called Kharis ( I personally think this sounds a little
like a girls name)

They are the two cheekiest kids you could ever meet, so they carry their
names very well!

I am also expecting in February '92 and have therefore just started thinking
about name possibilities. I have so far come up with four girls names, but no
boys names. I like the unusual names, but have found that boys have more
difficulty living with the very unusual, hebce the difficulty.

Anyway enough gabbling, here are the girls names I so far like:

Paris
Gigi
Courtney
Kira

Oh and also Kaija (pronounced Kye-ya)

Opinions welcome!!

Suzanne LaVine.

    I like Kira and Courtney, Paris isn't bad, but don't care for
    Gigi. As far as unusual is concerned, I'd say that Courtney is
    not at all unusual and is, in fact, a rather popular name for
    girls. Some other moderately unusual (but nice!) names that you
    might consider for a girl are:

    Kyla, Kendra, Tanya, Jade, Stacia, Tara, Lacie, Mallory, Shaina

    I agree with you that the unusual names seem to be better suited to
    girls while people tend to stick to the fairly traditional with
    boys. Your nephews names are indeed unique. How about?:

    Cody, Derek, Chad, Jesse, Devlin, Evan, Grant, Hunter, Kenyon, Logan

    If the baby's last name will be LaVine, you're lucky, as it seems
    very easy to work with!

    Good luck,
    Carol
721.2US versus UK VOGON::LAVINEWed Aug 14 1991 11:1921
Re: 721.1

You aren't by any chance from the States are you?

I've noticed quite a difference between what is popular in the US and what is
popular in the UK.

For instance Courtney is very unusual here in the UK I have only ever heard
of Courtney Pine (he is one of my favourite saxophonists).

I also noticed some of the names you mentioned, although nice were quite
Americanised ie Mallory, Shaina, Kendra, Chad etc.

You are quite right though I am lucky enough to have a surname that can
easily cope with various forenames (whether strange or not).

It was great to hear your opinion, and yes although I like Gigi as a name
would I really like to suffer my child being named after a half-wooden
half-human merry-go-round horse!

    re: 721.2

    Yes, I'm from the States. Just curious, what do you mean by
    "Americanized"? Over-used in America? Fabricated in America?

    I also don't have any idea what a carosel horse named Gigi is!

    My babynames book (1987, so out of date) shows the most common
    names in England as:

    Girls: Alexandra, Anna, Catherine, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Emma,
    	   Lucy, Rebecca, Sarah, Victoria

    Boys: Alexander, Andrew, Christopher, David, James, Jonathan,
          Nicholas, Robert, Thomas, and Wiliam

    Pretty close to the popular names in the US!

    Correct me if I'm wrong, but Gigi is a musical?

    K.C.
721.5No you are rightVOGON::LAVINEThu Aug 15 1991 05:0515
Yes Gigi is also a musical, but the book is a childrens/adults calssic.

It is one of the most beautiful books I ever read as a teenager, it really
stirred the imagination and emotions!.

Also, there is a great difference between American and English names. It is
quite surprising really, but people can generally tell the difference
between them. I can't quite explain why, there just is.

For instance, in England if you heard a child being called Chad or Randy
people here would automatically assume the child was American. England is
still quite old fashioned when it comes to naming children, a little too
old fashioned for my liking, but unfortunaly thats life!!!!!!

    How 'bout Laddie for a boy? Prob'ly not very original in your area,
    tho.
721.7VOGON::LAVINETue Aug 27 1991 10:318
Laddie is a term usually used by people from the North East of England or the
Scots, when refering to a young boy who is cheeky, naughty or cute etc.
It is also a very popular name for a dog, so I somehow think a boy would get
an awful lot of stick!

Nice idea though!!

721.8Hi Suzanne..CRISPY::HARDYABe Excellent to Each OtherWed Aug 28 1991 07:2911
    Hi Suzanne,

    I don't know if you remember me from the Service Desk ? I started just
    as you left !

    Anyway, I'm due in March, and I think this file's really helpful...

    As far as your choices go, I think Kaija sounds lovely for a girl. Have
    you narrowed your choices down at all yet ?

    Angela.
721.9VOGON::LAVINEThu Aug 29 1991 08:4124
Hi Angela,

yes I do remeber you. It's nice to hear from someone who you can put a face
to!

Congratulations for March, are you excited or nervous? I can't make my mind
up which I am yet!!!!

To answer your question of have I narrowed my choice of names down yet. No.
I also hav'nt really discussed it with Eric yet as we are trying not to get
too excited yet (you know tempting fate and all that rubbish!!)

I have had a real problem finding any boys names though. I can't say there
has been one which I have said "Yeh, I really like like" Still, plenty of time
to worry about that eh?

How's it going for you? Picked any names yet or are you still coming to
terms with the fact you are having a baby, let alone a name?

Reagrds,

Suzanne.

P.S How is the servicedesk? T. Rabbithutch still a pain in the ar-e?
721.10Kaija Taryn LaVineVOGON::LAVINETue Sep 03 1991 09:4912
So far I think the above name is THE one! There agian February is still a
long way off!!

I'm still looking for the unusual names, especially boys, as I havn't come
up with any yet!!

So get those brain cells into gear peeps!!

Suzanne.

P.S. LaVine is pronounced La-veen rather than vine - just to make things
simpler for you.
721.11Nice choiceDUCK::HARDYABe Excellent to Each OtherWed Sep 04 1991 05:3614
    Hi again Suzanne,

    I really like the name you've chosen ! I don't know whether I'm more
    excited or more nervous at the moment, but choosing names is turning
    out to be a pleasant diversion...

    We're fairly settled on choices (note 720 is mine) but will probably
    change our minds 100 times between now and then.

    Kaija is a gorgeous name.

    Speak to you soon,
    Angela.

721.12A REPLY FROM A "PARIS"!DPDMAI::SIMMONSPWed Sep 18 1991 18:4816
    HI SUZANNE,

    I'M USUALLY A "READ-ONLY" IN THIS FILE BUT HAD TO WRITE AFTER SEEING
    YOUR CHOICE OF GIRL NAMES.

    MY NAME IS "PARIS ELIZABETH" AND I HAVE NEVER HEARD OF ANYONE ELSE
    (ASIDE FROM MY MOTHER) CONSIDERING CHOOSING MY FIRST NAME!! I REALLY
    HAVE MIXED EMOTIONS ABOUT IT AND GET THE SAME FROM OTHERS -- SOME LOVE
    IT WHILE OTHERS FIND IT VERY UNUSUAL!

    I THINK THAT'S WHY I HAVE CHOSEN TO STICK WITH SOMEWHAT TRADITIONAL
    NAMES FOR MY CHILD (AND FUTURE CHILDREN). MY SON, BLAKE ANDREW, JUST
    TURNED TWO AND SO FAR NO PLANS FOR ANOTHER ANYTIME SOON!

    GOOD LUCK IN WHATEVER YOU CHOOSE!

721.13Re: Paris RDGENG::GRIMESTue Sep 24 1991 07:0321
Hi all,

It's Suzanne back, but in another account!

I'm glad to hear of someone else being called Paris, it just goes to prove I'm
not all that insane!!!

I still love the name, but am not sure whether I will use it yet, as I don't
really think it goes with Kaija very well. Saying that though, I may find
myself not using Kaija at all.

I also think I have gone off the name Taryn a little. It reminds me too much of
Karen. A name which reminds me of three girls I went to school with whom I
did'nt get on too well with.

It's funny how just by knowing someone can put you off their name totally,
especially if you did'nt like them!!

Keep the notes coming!

Suzanne.

Hi Suzanne,                      <<< Note 721.13 by RDGENG::GRIMES >>>

This may be a bit late, but I think your due date is February, so here goes.

Although Kaija is very pretty, I would be concerned that your daughter would
have to spell it all the time and that can be a real pain!

My 2 1/2 yr old sons name is Ward Evan. Ward is English and also my maiden
name. People either love it, Think is is unusual or Make remarks about
the 1950/60's show "Leave it to Beaver".

We love it!

If you haven't given birth yet, best of luck!
Betty

721.15I'll pass it on !DUCK::SEYMOURABe Excellent to Each OtherWed Jan 15 1992 04:4812
    Hi Betty,

    Suzanne is still "in waiting", though she has now left Digital. She and
    her husband still cannot decide on a boys' name, so I will pass your
    suggestion on to her.

    I doubt that I will be able to update you all as to what they
    eventually choose, as I go out on maternity leave at the end of this
    month, but no doubt I will manage somehow!

    Thank you
    Angela.
