707.0. "Name for Baby Harps" by WR2FOR::HARPHAM_LY () Wed Jul 10 1991 21:33

    My husband and I are expecting our first child in early December,
    and thus far, we are COMPLETELY at odds on names... so I thought
    I better ask for some help here...

    We do more or less agree on "Ivy" as a girl's middle name, in honor
    of Tony's mother, who passed away last year. But of course, I'd
    like it to flow well with the first name.

    Tony's Girl choices:             My feelings:
    -------------------             ------------

    Sarah I've always loved this name, but it
    				seems very common suddenly -plus, I'm
    				not sure it goes well with Harpham

    Stephanie			Don't particularly like

    Meredith I have a dear friend with this name, so
    				it's hard for me to dislike the name,
    				but it's not anything I ever considered
    Tony's Boy choices
    ------------------
    Harry (after his Dad)	I love his Dad, but "Harry" seems old,
    				and nicknamey. His Dad's real name is
    				Henry (he's called Harry), so that's a
    				runner up in Tony's mind, but still seems
    				old to me).

    My girl choices		Tony's feelings
    ---------------             ----------------

    Lily (or Lilly?)            Hates!

    Chelsea Tony's from England, and apparantly this
    				is the name of a lousy area outside
    				London (also a rival soccor team)
    My boy choices
    --------------

    James (called Jamie)	This is my brother's name, whom Tony
    				really likes, but he's lukewarm on the
    				name.

    Benjamin			Hates

    William I only like "Will" or "Willy". Tony
    				only likes "Bill" or "Billy"

    Please don't limit your comments to just these names -I'd really
    like some new ones to consider as well. I should add we are pretty
    firm about using a middle name as a family name (i.e. Tony's middle
    name is William, which I wouldn't mind re-using as a middle name;
    Anthony is another possibility; same with Ivy, etc.)

    One girl's name we do agree we like is "Emma", but neither of us are
    comfortable with it as a formal first name --is it a good nickname
    for anything?

    Thanks!!!

    From your list, my absolute favorites would be:

    Meridith Ivy Harpham
     and
    James Anthony Harpham

    While I do like some of your other girl's names, none of them really
    flow with Ivy as a middle name, except for Meredith!

    I'll try to think up some "new" names for you later...

    My daughter's name is Emily and I have heard her called Emma by
    friends as a nickname. But Emily Ivy sounds terrible together.

    I really like the idea of using Ivy. Is it possible you would
    like it as a first name instead of a middle name?

    For more suggestions:

    Emily Paige Harpham
    Lauren Ivy Harpham
    Ivy Amanda Harpham
    Paige Marie Harpham
    Marrisa Ivy Harpham
    Emily Elizabeth Harpham

    James Henry Harpham
    Everett James Harpham
    George Henry Harpham
    Cilfford William Harpham
    Tate William Harpham

    Congratulations and good luck,
    Chris

    Regarding .2: I misspelled Clifford.

    Regarding .3: Is the girl's name Hollace or Hollis?

    Hollace for a girl - she can be called Holly or Lacey?
    I have worked with two women - one spelled Hollace and
    the other spelled Hollis, so I guess it is to the person's
    liking. They both really like there names. I think it
    has alot of class.

707.6Good Suggestions!WR2FOR::HARPHAM_LYFri Jul 12 1991 17:4218

    You guys are terrific! We are about to leave for a two-week
    vacation, so I'm going to take some of these with me, and see
    what Tony thinks. There are some really good suggestions.

    It's interesting that "Emily" was suggested, because we both
    liked "Ellie" and "Emma" --but only as nicknames, and were
    searching for a formal name. One problem is that my pet
    bunny's name was Emily, so I'm not sure it's right to give
    that name to a child now...

    Anyway, thank you all tons! Please don't let the fact that
    I'll be out of touch for a few weeks stop your creative minds.
    I'll definately check in when I get back (and let you know if
    we've made any decisions!)

707.7"H" namesWR2FOR::HARPHAM_LYFri Jul 12 1991 19:3314

    I meant to add that I kind of like the alliteration of
    a "H" first name with Harpham. What do you think?

    i.e. Hilary Ivy Harpham
         Haley Ivy Harpham

    Any other nice male or female names beginning with "H"?

    Tx again,
    Lynn

707.8here's some "h" namesTIPTOE::STOLICNYTue Jul 16 1991 16:0114

    The alliteration does sound pretty good. However, Hilary and Haley
    don't really seem to flow with Ivy as a middle name. Other girl
    "H" names are: Hannah, Heather, Helen and Hope. Heather Ivy
    sounds like some kind of plant though!

    Boy "H" names are Harold, Hank, Hamilton, Hardy, Harlan, Henry,
    Hollis, Heath, Hayden, Howard, Hugh, Hunter...yuck! The only
    ones that I like are Hayden and Hunter.

    Is you last name pronounced Harp-ham or Harp-em or something else
    altogether?

    Carol
707.9WR2FOR::HARPHAM_LYTue Jul 30 1991 15:3814

    I know... there aren't a lot of good "H" names....

    Our last name is pronounced Harp-um, with the accent on the first
    syllable.

    We've just returned from vacation, and aren't much closer to a
    name, although I'm starting to accept the idea of Sarah for a girl.
    I'm not wild about "Sarah Ivy Harpham", but feel that it's okay,
    and I would really like to honor Tony's Mum this way.

    Anyway, I welcome more suggestions.... you have all been great...
