699.0. "using family names" by CSCOA1::MUELLER_F () Sun Jun 30 1991 23:37

    Hi,
We have gone through our family genealogy and have used family names for
each child. It has become a little harder to find names we like just
from these family names but so far we've done O.K.
First son FRANKLN (named for father & great uncle) HEROLD (paternal
grandfather's first name & great grandmothers maiden name.)
Second son WILLIAM (named for wife's nephew who died at 19 yrs &
husband's favorite uncle) HOWARD (maternal grandfather's first name.)
Third son PIETER (named for paternal great great uncle) MATHIAS
(paternal great great grandfather & 3x great grandfather.)
First daughter SaraKathryn. SARA (Way back in maternal lines Dutch
ancestors. Great, Great, etc Aunts) KATHRYN (husband's sister.)
Still have two names in reserve:
DIANA (wife is named Diane but prefers Diana) LYN (wife's middle name.)
THOMAS (Wife's maiden name was Thompson and her father went by Tommy)
ABRAHAM (maternal grandfather's middle name & maternal great
grandfather's & great great grandfather's, etc back 3 more generations
    first names.)

I think it is great to use family names for children. Usually that
person was a special, favorite relative, and it gives the child a
little more sense of "family" as well as a special closeness to
the person they were named after.

699.2nice for a middle name...in our case..TENVAX::MIDTTUNLisa Midttun,285-3450,NIO/N4,Pole H14-15Fri Aug 02 1991 14:466
I love the idea of using family names! However, what we planned to do
was use the family name for a middle name and one that we chose (family
name or not) for the first name. In our case, our 7 month old daughter
has the same middle name (May) as her mom (me), grandma, and her late
great-grandma. My sister has also done this. Her middle name and her
daughter's middle name are the same (Louise...named for our mom.)

    We have family names accidentally!

My name is Karen, I have a sister named Cathy. Her husband has a
sister named Karen and a sister named Kathy. My brother Rick married a
girl named Karen, who has a sister named Kathy. I also have a niece
named Katherine (who we call, thankfully, Katie).

Go by my middle name? Sorry...that's Theresa; my mother's name, and
the name of another niece (called Tess). And I can't go by K.T.,
because that is, once again, my niece Katie.

The only other "family" names we have are Steven (the name of my brother
who died in infancy, and my oldest nephew) Joseph (my grandfather's
name, and my brother Peter's middle name) and Richard (brother, uncle,
    and middle name of nephew).

And people wonder why I call myself...

    K.C.
