| Matthew! Everewhere I turn I see/hear/read about a new Matthew! There
are 3 women that I work with who within the last couple of years have
had Matthews.
I love the name, but I am glad that it was not one of my "chosen" list.
Other names that I notice a lot of lately...

636.2 | Sad but true to see great names become so common | VIA::MEHRING | | Thu Jan 24 1991 13:34 | 30 |
| I totally agree!!! Many of my favorite names are just getting too overused
these days. There are cons to both extremes - having a name that's too popular
may make it harder for a little kid to feel unique & special, but having one
that's too unusual may end up in embarrassing moments when people either can't
spell it or mistake the sex. However, I think there is still a lot of "middle
ground" inbetween, where the names are not too common but also don't sound too
weird or trendy. The hard part is finding one that sounds right with the last
name *and* that both parents-to-be don't have previous bad-connotations about!!
Some very popular names of the 90's:
Ashley
Brittany
Chelsea
Caitlin
Tiffany
Connor
Dillon
Adam
Cody
Kyle
Ryan
Jason
Don't get me wrong - I really like most of these names (i.e. Chelsea became my
favorite girls name back in 1981 during a trip to England and Scotland, but
apparently it's become quite common these days), but one can't ignore
the trends...

636.3 | Popular name or not??? | HYEND::KTRAINQUE | | Fri Jan 25 1991 09:37 | 18 |
| I had my first son in 1985, my second son in 1987. I picked Jocelyn
Rose in 1985 after my original name (Amanda) became REALLY popular.
There were 17 Amandas born while I was pregnant. In 1987 my ex-husband
and I picked Cara Marie after our original name (Ashley) again became
popluar.
My husband and I have sinced divorced and I had a third child during
that time. I finally had my girl after considering all the unique
names and finding out that they were really popular I finally settled
on one that was different but really pretty. My daughter was born
October 31, 1989 and I named her Aislynne (Azlynne) Elizabeth Trainque
(Traink). Aislynne is Gaelic and it means Vision or Dream. The Gaelic
spelling is Aislinn. I have yet to find another Aislynne over here.
Most people's reaction is how pretty!!!!! In Ireland it's suppose to
be really popular.

RE: Kim (one of forty in my class..)
See! (8 I'll bet your Mom thought you'd be the only one,
too!!! (8
RE: Cody, Kyle
Awwwww man!! Don't say that!! (8 Those were two choices
after we sort of half heartedly dropped Zachary. Man!!!
Maybe if I just wrote the alphabet out, pinned it to the
wall, and threw a dart at six or seven letters I could
come up with something original. (8

636.5 | Names of Places make interesting names | RAB::MEHRING | | Wed Jan 30 1991 13:44 | 20 |
| Kim,
Why not try looking for a name from a different angle -- like maps, history
books, hobbies, etc. Some names of places make really nice names (as long as
people don't start copying too rapidly) and they were often named after people
originally anyway! Names like: Quincy, Madison, Maarten, Austin, Weston,
Dakota. I've come up with a couple names I really like this way, especially
from places I've travelled to and had great experiences at (I'm hesitant to
actually list them since they're still high contenters for my first-on-the-way)
but I'm sure you get the idea...
Other than that, I guess you just have to go with what you like and remind your-
self that there are a lot of very successful, unique, creative Sues, Toms, Johns,
and Marys out there so having a "popular" name is not a precursor to failure.
Good luck!
Any more names people out ther are hearing used often these days???

I can't think of any names off hand that are the names of
the 90s but I'm sure I will.
As far as maps, history books, etc., I've thought about
that... beau isn't too fond of unique names so I've got
compromise a lot of times.
