| I know, alot of people call her Melonie and of course as a dutiful
mother I let them know of the correct pronunciation.
People tell me that it will be hard for her to get people to pronounce
her name correctly when she gets older, but I think it will also get
her recognized more easily when she wants to be.
When I was trying to come up with an original name I would take a name
and try to change it, but what is funny is that I wasn't thinking of
the name Melonie when I made up Malainie's name. I was thinking of the
name Marlena (a girlfriends name).
> I love the nickname you are using for your daughter!
Me too! my mother and her whole family love it also, they say it
sounds soooo Irish.
My mother asked me to call her Katie, but I said no, that I named her
Malainie for a reason. So, we came to agreement on Lainie Kate.

| I think that Malainie sounds Hawaiian! (That is NOT...repeat, NOT...a
put-down! Its a pretty name.) And, like the others, I love the
nickname!
I notice that you say that you picked that particular name for a
reason. Would you mind telling the reason here? I am fascinated by
stuff like that. If you'd rather not, tho, never mind. I'm just
curious. (also read: nosy ;^) )

| This is really funny, because when I first chose the name, I spelled it
Malanie and people would pronounce it Ma-law-nee (it is so hard to
spell out what you are trying to say!!!!!) but anyway people used to
say it with a Hawaiian accent to it, but I wanted it to sound "Irish"
That is why I added an I before the "n" along with the "i" after the
"n".
If you have ever heard or can speak with an Irish accent try to
picture this name being said to you with the Irish Brougue voice. It
sounds wonderful.
> I think that Malainie sounds Hawaiian
I don't take it as an insult at all, But as stated before, I am Irish
and Scottish, so you can understand why I would want an Irish sounding
name (vs. Hawaiian). I guess it could probably be pronounced many
different ways, but when I hear it with the Irish brougue, it sounds
so beautiful.
I am on the phone with Malainies Dad and he is helping me to write
exactly how to pronounce her name. here goes:
Ma-lay-ne
I don't mind telling you why I chose Malainie Kathleen. I guess it
could be summed up with one word, my last name is "Smith". I didn't
want to have a short name to go with Smith so I was looking for a name
wether said fully or as a nickname to have at least 2 syllables to it.
as you can see, Lainie fits into what I wanted, we just added Kate to
it because it sounds so cute. But, one of my main reasons for chosing
her name was that I wanted somethin original and different, not that I
don't like the traditional names (my brother is "John", Dad is "Jim"),
I guess that I just wanted something different?.
