566.0. "Marissa Ruth" by CSSE32::DICKSON () Fri Aug 03 1990 16:40

Announcing our baby's birth & naming
    		Marissa Ruth Dickson
    born January 31, 1990.

This notesfile was a lot of help in the factors to consider!

Marissa-- in honor of my mom, Mary
Ruth-- in honor of Bob's mom, Ruth

"Marissa" is actually derived from Latin "mare", sea. We liked
that---we spend a lot of time windsurfing.

I was very happy picking out a three syllable name that's not
too common, similar to my own.

Our debate over nicknames continues, however.
    		Missy
    		Mimi (is that Italian?)
    		Maris
    		May
    		Iris
Any opinions out there? Any other suggestions? Her dad isn't happy
with any of the nicknames I've listed.

He can always call her something like "Princess" or "Pumpkin" or some
    other such.

MY dad called me "Kitten". Of course, there aren't all that many
nicknames for "Karen" (although goodness knows I've got nicknames to
    spare! ;^) )

Congratulations on the birth of your child. I really like her name.
Does she have to have a nickname?

I knew a Marissa who went by Mari (Mar (as in car) - ee), which I really like.
Good choice of name...

re: -1 The child doesn't *have* to have a nickname, but they are so much fun
and personnally, I think it's nice to have the variety offered by a few names...

I know you've already got a nickname for Marissa by now...

My sister is named Marisa (pronounced with the "i" sounding like a long "e"
i.e., "Mah - ree - sah", accent on the middle syllable).
When we were kids growing up we thought her name was too long so we called
her any of the following (none are as pretty as her real name though!):

	Matt
Risa (again pronounced "Reeesah", not "Risah)
	Mare (one-syllable, like the horse)
spoiled brat (oops sorry, don't know how that got in there!)

I don't know how we got Matt out of Marisa, but it got used the most! She
hated it! Starting about junior high she told everyone we could only call
her Marisa. My husband is probably still the only one who still calls her
Matt from time to time.
