545.0. "A girls name for a fussy father" by NZOV03::POOLE (I'm walking on sunshine) Tue Jun 26 1990 00:16

    Hi,

    We're expecting our first baby in early October.

    We have decided on a boys name - Cameron Poole Smith

    My husbands name is Smith and mine is Poole. We're not hyphenating.
    They'll all have my name as a middle name and his as the surname.

    As far as girls go Lauren is the only one he can agree on and even
    then its not 100% agreement. It would be Lauren Poole Smith.

    I like lots of girls names - Emma, Jessie, Jessica, Abbey, Gemma but
    they have all been vetoed!! (Emma was OK for about 24 hours and then
    got vetoed).

    I think we're having a girl so it could be quite important to find a
    girls name!

    Any ideas? Somewhere out there, there has to be a name we both like.

    hi,

    This popped into my head the minute I read this note -

    Cassandra Poole Smith

    Cass or Cassie, if you want one, for a nick name.

    Let us know the results........

545.5Different ApproachNYSBU::CHANGFri Jun 29 1990 13:389
    How about taking a different approach. Does he have a favorite
    aunt, grandmother, godmother, cousin? Maybe he would be more
    agreeable to using a first or middle name from one them or his
    mother's name. Of course, you can review the group of names
    and offer the ones you like the best.

    Just an idea.

    Chris
545.6How about Laura?RIPPLE::JOHNSON_JOFri Jun 29 1990 18:4619

    Well, Lauren is a beautiful name...of course I like Laura
    even better (Laura Poole...).

    Could you try persuading the father of the child-to-be to
    try to take more of an open attitude towards names? Could
    he be doing this as a power play as men can feel so power-
    less during their mate's pregnancy (they can't directly
    control or affect its course)?

    Anyway, here's my pitch to cast your name-net wide, and come
    up with a prize catch. It can be frustrating, but you've got
    to have open minds about it to start with. Certainly, reserve
    the right to say "NO" to some names that neither of you
    could stand to use forever after, but there should be a middle
    ground of acceptable names.

    You're lucky, maybe, having a name such as Poole to work with.
    I think your choices would be many and varied.
545.7AddendumRIPPLE::JOHNSON_JOFri Jun 29 1990 18:539

    re: .4 (or .5)...

    A name such as Cassandra, or maybe Alexandra, goes well
    with a simple surname such as Poole. The contrast provides
    constructive balance, distinction for the wearer of the name,
    and suggests strength of character.

    [What is this, anyway, a high fashion name show?]
545.8NZOV03::POOLEI'm walking on sunshineSun Jul 01 1990 17:5121
    No power play here just a teacher who associates every name with
    someone he's taught and rejects them!!! Sometimes in not very
    flattering terms!!  ;-)

    He likes short names - he might like Alex for a girl but not Alexandra.
    Or Chris but not Christine...

    And simple names too.

    Amy did get a second look but.. and I forced him to consider Rachel
    because I quite like that but still not luck.

    I think out of sheer perversity I've decided to go off Lauren just
    to make him consider other names!!

    Keep 'em coming folks. Somewhere, somehow...

    >No power play here just a teacher who associates every name with

    You may want to 'gently' remind him that his child will have his/her
    own identity *regardless* of the name and who it may remind him of
    (excuse the dangling preposition). In a matter of days, he will not even
    think of the other 'nameholder' his child will become the 'name representative'.

    Although we don't have any children yet, we've talked about what we
    like for names. I can appreciate that there are just some names that
    remind you of certain people that you would prefer *not* to be
    reminded.

    Good luck...

    By the way - I've always like the name Taylor for a girl 8*).

545.10Ivy Smith!OBSESS::PHELANThu Jul 05 1990 14:0019
    What about: Alexa Poole Smith ? That's simple and he could call her
    Alex or Lexi! A few more suggestions:

    Ivy Poole Smith
    Rose Poole Smith
    Kate Poole Smith
    Tonya Poole Smith
    Dawn Poole Smith

    I am alittle partial to Ivy. I think that has a very pretty sound to
    it. Also, it is "short and simple", but it has TWO sylabols - which I
    definately think sounds better than one - considering Poole and Smith
    have only one. The 2 in the first name add a better flow. If you
    listen to Rose Smith... it doesn't sound as nice because everything
    has one syalbol.  Get it?

    Good luck!!! and keep us posted!

    Just a few suggestions from someone who is thinking of having kids
    soon and has been searching for names..

    Chelsea Poole Smith
    Ashley Poole Smith
    Justine Poole Smith

    Although I really like Lauren a lot (my confirmation name) ..and
    I also think Taylor is very pretty for a girl..

545.12Janessa7412::LINDSEYFri Jul 13 1990 17:0712

    I know this name isn't short like your husband prefers, but I agree
    with various other noters that you need more than 1 syllable in the
    first name...

    How about...

    Janessa Poole Smith?

    Sue

545.13Why Not Camarin also for a Girl?MAMTS3::SVEACHTue Jul 17 1990 12:2114
    Since your husband likes Cameron, have you ever considered Camarin for
    a girl? My sister had a baby girl and named her Camarin Heleen Mass.
    They took the father's middle name Cameron and gave it a feminine
    spelling and then took the mom's middle name Heleen for the baby's
    middle name. I just love the combination!! Sometimes we call her Cami
    but more often then not, we call her by her given name.

    I don't think this is a very common name for a girl, nor, in my
    opinion, too unusual.

    Hope you like it!!

    I thought of Carissa or Camille to go with Cameron.

    Also, Kailee and Ashlee are a couple of names in my family that come to
    mind!

545.18The end is nigh...and we can't wait!!NZOV03::POOLEI'm walking on sunshineSun Aug 26 1990 19:5816
    Hi,

    Thanks for all your suggestions. They gave us things to talk about.
    Looks like we're sticking with Lauren or Emma. I finish work this week
    and the baby is due approx 5 weeks later. I'm going to get a friend to
    reply telling you what we had and what we called it. Thats what I have
    always wanted to know as I read this conference.

    We're both hoping for a girl but who cares as long as its safe and
    healthy. Its just the waiting thats hard at the moment and there isn't
    a lot we can do about that either!!!!

    Sue

545.19Good LuckNYSBU::CHANGTue Aug 28 1990 09:549
    Best of luck to you. We'll be watching for the birth announcement!!

    Chris

    PS As I was rereading this, your husband's preference for Cameron
    for a boy. Have you considered Karen for a girl? The names are
    similar and short.

    said hello to the world.

    Sue and Cameron are fine, oh yes, so is Bruce.
