| According to my book on babynames, Esther means 'good fortune', but then this is
the same book that says 'Cameron' means 'crooked nose'!!
I have never heard of any nicknames and I think it's a lovely name.

| Isn't Esti (as in Esti Lauder) a nickname for Esther? If not, you could
make it one.

Don't you mean Estee' Lauder (The French cosmetic company)?!!! That is
not a nickname for Esther - it is a French name in it's own right
(whether or not it is their equivalent of Esther I don't know...)

| My sister-in-law's brother has a little girl named Esther and they call
her Esti. So I guess you could say that Esti is the nick name for
Esther.

| You can read the story of Esther in the Book of Esther in the bible.
She was a great heroine of the Jewish people by saving them from
destruction by an evil king. The story is celebrated in the Jewish
holiday Purim which occurs around February, with much merriment.

You're right about the name (the evil was not the king though, but his
"right hand"-Hamman.
Some nicknames for Esther that are used here in Israel (Esther is quite
a popular name around here) are: Esti,Etti,Etta etc.
