536.0. "Abigail - what do you think?" by TRCA01::MLANG (Novice at almost everything) Thu May 31 1990 13:40

I'm expecting in late September. I have two names picked out:

    	Brendan (Bren)
    	Abigail (Abbey)

I'm receiving alot of opposition to the name Abigail (not from my
husband - he likes it almost as much as I do). One of the reasons
I really like both of these names is they are both Irish names (as
is our surname; Lang) and I like both nicknames. Invariably kids
and adults for that matter use nicknames and I wanted to make sure
we liked the shorter form of the names we chose.

Anyway, what do some of you noters think of these names. I do not
have any second names (why do we give our children second names?).

We are expecting our first on October 26. We have Luke for a boy.
Still undecided on a girl, but the two choices right now are Abigayle
and Keelin. So I like your Abbey!!

I love the name Abbey... nice choice. Not too sure about Brendan,
though, but that's just my opinion so don't pay attention. I'm
a bit concerned about you mentioning the fact that you've received
a lot of opposition from others (not including your husband) on
your choices. My opinion on that is: IT'S NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS!
It really ticks me off when people say "Oh, don't name your baby
xxxx, because I don't like that name." When I was pregnant and
people asked what names I had chosen, I always got negative comments
and felt like decking some people. It's not *their* child and if
you and your husband like a particular name, then tell all those
people to take a hike! I really believe that you and your husband
you choose a name that you like and don't give what other people
think a second thought. There is absolutely nothing wrong with
the name Abigail or Brendan, for that matter. This is a decision
that is made for *life* and you, above everyone else, should be
comfortable with your child's name. Congratulations...

536.3Here's my two cents...BARTLE::WHITCOMBMon Jun 04 1990 14:1812
I whole-heartedly agree with Kathryn... (.2), and whatever you feel you
really want for your child's name should be what you give him or her.

However, since you're soliciting opinions, I'll throw in mine, too. I
happen to LOVE the name Abigail, and one of the most darling friends
I've had was named Abbey. I really like it. I like Brendan, but
probably wouldn't pick it myself, because it reminds me too much of the
female name Brenda, which I'm not wild about.

Just my opinion! Best of luck.

I think Abigail is a beautiful name however I would shorten it to
    Abby or Abi not Abbey

536.5Irish additive for BrendanSMAUG::RLAMONTThu Jun 21 1990 09:5129
My sister has a son, Stephen Brendan, and it sounds nice. I like it
very much because it's different, and somehow fits him. Her maiden
name was Ryan, so we're very irish and that is a nice first, middle
or last name if you're irish. Even for a girl now a days it's become
    popular. Just a suggestion.

I also like Abegail. I can't think of an irish middle name for that
but I'm sure there are plenty.

Regarding the person who have "pushed back" for your choice of names.
Being pregnant myself I have run into this, mostly from my husbands
side who would like more traditional, but boring (in my opinion) names.
My folks have been very good, and even have suggested very different
names in trying to help. However, my mother made a very nice point.
No matter what my husband and I chose to name our child they will love
it regardless, and hopefully his family will as well. If they don't
like the name, that's there problem. As Kathryn said as well, it's
YOUR child, this is the one time where NOONE should influence you, nor
should you let them. This is why I've chosen to keep my mouth shut
with my husband's family about names. I just say that's not our
priority at this point, something will come to me later.

Or my husband has chosen the tactic of giving them the strangest name
he can come up with that he knows his mom will hate, that way she gets
the hint and usually stays quiet until the next visit.

    Good luck.

536.6Biblical names are nice.PFSVAX::LILLYTue Jul 17 1990 10:486
I love Abigail!!! I like it especially because I've tried to stick to
Biblical names. I have a Rachel and a Hannah already and if the next
one is a girl, I am strongly thinking about Abigail. Stick to your
    guns.

536.7Remember the Beatles?AIMHI::LLEBLANCMon Jul 30 1990 09:478
    I'm pregnant with twins...and I'm considering Abbey for a girl...I love
    it!!

I DO have a concern though and that if your last name is LANG, she
might get really razzed about having the name "ABBEY LANG"...that is if
anyone remembers the Beatles song Abbey Lane!!

Just something to consider...Best of luck to you whatever you decide!!

    re:-1

The Beatles never had a song called "Abbey Lane"... They had an
*album* titled "Abbey Road". Besides, even if it was Abbey Lane,
I doubt anybody would tease a child over something like that.
Abbey Road was a great album.

536.9"Penny Lane is in my ears & in my eyes"STEREO::FAHELAmalthea CelebrasMon Jul 30 1990 12:568
    Re: .7 & .8

The song is PENNY Lane. And I agree with Kathryn. I mean, I recently
overheard a child refer to the Beatles as "Paul McCartney's old group"!

Actually, Abbey Lang has rather a nice ring.
