517.0. "TARA or ALEX origins" by COGITO::SAMARTANO (Hello Down There!) Wed Mar 28 1990 10:17

    We're expecting our first on September 18th. Unlike most people
    I know, we've had names picked out for a while.

    I searched this file and couldn't find any info on the two names.
    Can anyone help out? Opinions welcome too!

    BOY: Alex (birth certificate will read Alexander)

    GIRL: Tara Michele (would like the origin of Tara)

    Thanks,

    denise

517.1What I know about Tara and Michelle/MicheleRIPPLE::JOHNSON_JOWed Mar 28 1990 15:4210
    Hi,

    I would guess that Alex, shortened from Alexander, is Greek in
    origin. Not sure of the literal meaning, but I'm sure it means
    something in Greek.

    Tara means "castle" in Gaelic. Michelle is the feminine version of
    Michele, which is an Italian/French spelling for Michael, I think.

    Hope this helps a little.

    Wasn't Tara the name of the mansion in "Gone With The Wind"?

    K.C. (who thinks that Tara is a BEAUTIFUL name for a girl.)
517.3Scarlett's house...RIPPLE::JOHNSON_JOWed Mar 28 1990 16:302
    Yes, Tara was the name of the O'Hara's home in GWTW.

Tara : Irish Gaelic, meaning "rocky pinnacle"
	    Mythological, Tara was the home of the ancient Irish kings

    Tara: Unlike Camelot, Tara is an actual place in Ireland. The
    Hill of Tara was the home of ancient Irish kings. Some ruins can
    still be seen. Its about 30 miles outside of Dublin in Co. Meath.
