We have a baby due in May. My husband's last name is Ferris. We are 70% sure we're having a girl (ultrasound) but I'd like a boys name just in case. The catch is that the name must be Gaelic or Celtic. I'll list the ones already used up in the family. Kevin Christopher (dad to be) Sean Patrick (big brother to be) Brian Michael Michael Lyn (sibling Kevin has fought with for 36 years) Kyle Aaron Jason Patrick Francis (Gramps to be) Richard (sibling I've fought with for 34 years) Christopher Herbert (Gramps to be - but his name isn't even in the running) BTW, I love Eamonn (after Eamonn Coughlin the runner) but my husband says its too wierd. He's also ruled out Brendan because of the Orange Juice commercial. Our girls name is Elisabeth, nickname Lisa, after my (German) Grandma. My choice for a middle name is Kathleen (Kevin's twin) or Kaitlyn -- will that sound funny with a German first name? I've also thought about copying Caroline Kennedy and using my Oma's first and last names. Elisabeth Wahl Ferris Thanks, Rochelle

Rochelle, Elisabeth is a variation of Elizabeth, a biblical name that's been around longer than Germany! It's not German, but rather Hebrew, meaning "oath of God". Here's a list of Celtic & Gaelic boys names. Some are pretty weird and sound like last names. I've "*"'ed the ones I especially like. My vote is for Ryan! - ori Adair Ahearn Alan Arthur Bainbridge Baird Barry Bevan Blain Blair Bram Brett Brody Cadell Calhoun *Camden *Cameron Campbell Carlin Carney Carroll *Casey Cassidy Chalmers Clyde *Colin Conlan Connor Conroy Conway *Corey Cowan Craig Cullen Curran Dacey Dallas Darby Darcy Darren Delaney Dempsey Dermot Derry Desmond Devin Devlin Dillon Donahue Donnelly Donovan Douglas Doyle Duane Duff Duncan Egan Farrell Fergus Finlay Finn Flynn Forbes Gale Galen Gallagher Galvin Gannon Garvey Gilchrist Gilmore Gilroy Glen Glendon Grady Guthrie Haley Hogan Hurley Keef Keegan Keenan Keir Kelly Kendrick Kennedy Kenneth Kenyon Kermit Kerry Kieran Killian Kincaid Leslie Logan Mac Mackenzie Macnair Malcolm Melvin Morgan Morven Muir Murdock Murray *Neil Nevin Nolan Pembroke Powell Quinlan Quillan Quinn Rafferty Riley Riordan Roarke *Ryan Shane Shannon Shea Sheehan Sheridan Sloan Sullivan Teague Torin Torrance Tracy Tremain Trevor Troy Tully Tynan
490.3 | BEWARE OF 'STAGE' IRISH NAMES | NEAENG::GAYNOR | Fri Feb 09 1990 14:38 | 12
I grew up in Ireland. I lot of Gaelic names you see in babybooks are in fact never heard of in Ireland. Therefore you could end up with an Irish name that the Irish cannot pronounce! Most common names in Ireland are the same as here, Micheal, Joseph, Thomas etc. A few popular Irish boys names are Barry, Liam, Conor, Brian, Kevin, Dermot, Eamon, Declan, Aiden. While not very common in Ireland I'm thinking of Emmett after the Irish patriot Robert Emmett 'the darling of Erin'. rj
