428.0. "K, my name is Karen" by STEREO::FAHEL (Amalthea, the Silver Unicorn) Thu Aug 17 1989 08:27

I have never really liked my name, and I want to hear what other
    opinions of it are.

The only famous Karen that I can think of is the subject of the
book "Karen" by Marie Killilea, about a girl with CP. It is one
of my favorite books, but I got a lot of teasing when I used it
as a subject for a book report in school.

In literature, movies and TV there are few characters named Karen.

I am excluding alternate spellings (Caryn, Carin, Keren, etc.).
I tried THAT route before, and people pretty much ignored it.

The name is a derivitive of Catherine, which means "Pure". (When
I found that out, I teased my mother about naming my sister Cathy
    and I the same.)

    Waddya think?

    K.C.

P.S. I LOVE my middle name, which is Theresa, but that is my mother's
    name.

428.4hey what's wrong with Karen?MEMIT::KBOOTHThu Sep 14 1989 13:0317
Well, I don't understand your dislike for your name. I have never had
any problem with name calling. Karen really doesn't rhyme with
anything so I didn't have a problem with that. The only thing I didn't
like about my name was the other 3 or 4 girls with the same name in my
classes would respond each time I was called on. I guess you should
ask your mother why she called you Karen. My mother told me that she
always liked the name and I guess I caught her enthusiasm. I am one of
7 children and I sort of feel proud that my mother chose me to bear the
    name she always liked. I wasn't a babybook name . . . so I guess that
    is why I feel special.

you should too, after all unless you want to change it - it is yours
for the rest of your life.

    Smile!

428.5Thank you, Karen Booth!STEREO::FAHELAmalthea, the Silver UnicornThu Sep 14 1989 13:2818
    Gee, an encouraging Karen!

Thank you. The reason I don't like the name is because I DID ask
my mother. She said that "It was just a name I thought of at that
moment. You were supposed to be a boy". She has never expressed
any certain fondness for the name, nor has anyone else. My brother,
giving his daughter a middle name to call after me, gave her Corrine.
    (See what I'm up against?)

I am also one of 7 (!). And I used to be called Karen Alot (as
in Carin' Alot), which isn't so bad. The other joke went that if
I married a guy in my class, my name would be Karen Caron.

No, the only reason that I don't care for the name is because of
my mother's reasoning. I would be more proud of the name if there
was something to be proud of. I always felt it was a "nuthin" name.

428.6You are Terrific!MEMIT::KBOOTHFri Sep 15 1989 09:2522
Hey well now you can be proud. We have a lot in common! I dated a
"Caron" and got the same razzing.

But hey I am a terrific person! And I bet you are too. I was always
told I care alot but it was true. I am very "karen". So I guess that
    fits.

BTW - my middle name is Frances. I never like that too much when I was
younger - just turned 24 in August - but I have grown to love it. My
mothers middle name is Frances and my grandfathers too. I feel now it
is sort of an honor cuz I never knew my grandfather - he died 3 months
before I was born. Anyway my mother at first since my grandfather had
died almost made me his names sake. Get this "Ernestine Frances" how
is that? Wouldn't you just die! So I guess I just have one more
blessing to count. You do too - you could have been a BOY! Yuk!

Smile - and don't go asking your mother why she named you - you may not
    like the answer! ;)

    Take Care

428.7My best friendASABET::K_HAMILTONKaren Hamilton - Activist!Mon Oct 09 1989 09:2717
I always loved being Karen because I was named after my grandmother.
We were best friends and shared many similarities. My middle name,
Ann, is short for Anna, my greatgrandmother, so I always felt special
when I was with either of them.

The only problem I had was I was named about 5-6 years before the name
became popular. People assumed I was foreign and would ask where I
    was from.

My grandmother grew up in Maynard and at the time she started school
teachers wouldn't call children by their given names if they were "too
foreign." My grandmother's middle names were Marie Amalia and the
teacher called her Mary. That stuck for about 75 years. When she was
about 85 she moved to a new neighborhood and when asked what her name
was she said 'Karen.' All her new friends for her last 10 years called
her Karen and all her old friends called her Mary.

    Hi all,
I named my daughter Karen because every one I have ever known was
still called Karen when they were older. They just don't get crummy
nicknames like "Cooper the Pooper" did. Also, its really a pretty
name. My wife wanted to name her Catherine, but I didn't particularly
like it. She liked Karen too.
